I haven't owned Lego since I was a kid but the fascination is still there whenever I see it. I got redirected to this via Wired at lunch today. Lego has a site where you can post new Lego concepts (you must build a demo to get it posted.) Users can then vote and if they hit a number (10,000 supporters maybe) Lego will build it as a production model.

I hit the link to get a look at this guys Firefly creation. A great job. It already looks like a production set but would have obviously been made from random set pieces.

Lego has some cool stuff out there now - Harry Potter, Star Wars, Toy Story, and, most recently, DC Superheroes (Batman and the gang).

I disagree.

I thought Lego was much cooler when you just got random pieces and made something of your own design...rather than a "kit" with instructions on how to make one thing in particular!

I fall between Mark and JP. I liked the sets (ie Legoland), but without the tie ins with other brands.

I prefer the Leg'os that come in stockings.

I think both can work.
I'd be a sucker to buy and build ships from pop culture. However, it wouldn't be long before I took them apart and built my own creations. No law says you have to stick to the original design once you get all those cool custom pieces.

As a kid, I had both. The set of just quasi-random pieces and a large book with tons of ideas of what you could build with it. I also had some typical spaceship ones.

After I build things from the books, they would get taken apart and I would put the pieces all into the same box and just build whatever from there.

My daughter on the other hand, who has been a crazed Harry Potter fan for a few years, has HUNDREDS of dollars worth of Harry Potter Legos. They are all assembled and being displayed on a shelf in her room. My fear is that if they ever came out with The Hunger Games Lego stuff, she would buy that stuff too.

Maybe the idea of just being creative and building stuff is why so many people I know who play any sort of "computer games" like Minecraft. You build entire worlds out of blocks. Sounded so lame until a buddy bought me a copy. Now I look forward to the time that I get to go online and dig sand, put it in the furnace to make glass blocks, turn glass blocks into panes of glass, and then continue constructing my massive glass tree-castle... But I digress...

They've come under a lot of heat for their new products, aimed specifically at girls, and themed in a very 1960's gender-relegated fashion---like kitchens and hair salons.

I think it sucks. As a parent of a 3 y.o. girl, I'm appalled at the fact they're still shilling the same pink crap with the same old gender roles, except with more sex. Jeezus, let her be a kid! Let her choose what she wants, don't just force f*ing pink vacuum cleaners and kitchens on her. And no, making a lab coat pink with pink lab equipment doesn't f*ing count.

They claim that the sets "for girls" on the market are the result of several years of product testing with actual tiny female people--Danish ones. I thought all Scandanavian women were nymphos?

They shoulda made a massage parlor set, a lesbian school gymnasium set, and an evil restaurant chef/owner set. How's 'bout breakin' some financial career barriers with a Suse Orman doll?

Now what to get my niece then? I guess there is always the Lego Softball Set but then maybe I've swung the pendulum to far the other way?

How about a nice, politically correct, single, yellow block. She won't be able to build anything but it won't insult anyone either.

The big deals when I was a kid were the 8-pip blocks with the wheels that pushed into the ends and the rotary thing for helicopters.
