Friday evening in London the First Night of the 118th annual BBC Proms takes place. For eight weeks many of the world's greatest orchestras visit for daily concerts in what is fairly called "The World's Greatest Classical Music Festival".

The concerts are all available live at the BBC iPlayer site and most are available on demand there for the following seven days. As I have in past years, I'll probably occasionally mention a concert that I especially enjoyed and think that you might as well.

Prom Concert 6 took place Wednesday evening. A new composition was given its premier to start the concert, and although there wasn't much of note, it wasn't unpleasant(as is much "modern" classical music)and lasted only about 12 minutes.

There followed an excellent performance of the very romantic Rachmaninoff 2d Piano Concerto, with a brief Gershwin/Earl Wild encore. Following intermission, the rather dark Prokofiev 6th symphony closed the concert.

Available for seven days on the BBC iPlayer site .

This past Wednesday evening Prom Concert 15 featured a fine performance of the great Dvorak 7th Symphony on the second half of the program, which I greatly enjoyed. The concert began with a transcription for full orchestra of the Smetana String Quartet no. 1, which I'd never heard before and found interesting. The first half concluded with Prokofiev's 1st Violin Concerto.

Available for six more days on the BBC iPlayer site .

Earlier this evening Prom Concert 27 took place. The first half was brief, with only the beautiful music Wagner composed as a Christmas/birthday present to his wife, the Siegfried Idyll(for their son Siegfried)being played. On Christmas morning Wagner had brought in a small group of musicians and she awoke to their playing.

Following intermission the brief first half was balanced by the massive Bruckner 8th Symphony, with a "heavenly length" flowing from the imagination of the humble and deeply religious Bruckner. Available for seven days at the BBC iPlayer site .

Prom Concert 33 opened with the Prelude to Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, which was followed by a newly-composed setting of the Credo, with just a few moments of dissonance which didn't detract from the musical enjoyment.

Following the internission feature, which was also on religion in music, Bruckner's 6th Symphony, another of his massive musical cathedrals, was given an excellent performance. Available for six more days at the BBC iPlayer site .

An enjoyable program of Scandinavian music was heard in Prom Concert 35. The centerpiece was a fine performance of the popular Grieg Piano Concerto. Opening the concert was the Sibelius 6th Symphony and the concluding number was the Sibelius 3rd Symphony. Available for six more days at the BBC iPlayer site .

Thanks, JohnK. Sibelius is one of my favorite composers.

Sean, if you want to add to your Sibelius collection(and you know that you do)consider this notable bargain 5-disc box, including all the symphonies, the violin concerto and several of the tone poems. Exceptionally good sound quality and conducted with slavic passion. About $25 for the 5-disc set here .

Athletes weren't the only Brazilian visitors to London. The fine Sao Paolo Symphony, with American conductor(conductress?)Marin Alsop presented Prom Concert 45, with a very entertaining selection of music from North and South America. On the first half was Dvorak's 9th "New World" Symphony. Following intermission were two brief fanfares(that the bass drummer must have really loved), a Villa-Lobos composition featuring the piano, and concluded with the Ginastera Estancia and its wild Malambo finale.

Available for six more days on the BBC iPlayer site (and keep listening after the concert to the interesting Villa-Lobos choral piece they put on).
