Damn, the S590 is very reasonably priced and it has SACD support.

The SACD capability of the S390, S590 & S790 is why I went with the Sony. If I remember correctly, Pioneer was the only other BD player in this price range to have it as well, but it had some less than favourable user reviews on the net.

Future Shop had the S590 on for $100 on Boxing Day (all gone now at my local store), but I had already got mine from Santa...

We continued our Star Wars marathon last night. We went back to the beginning with Episode I 'The Phantom Menace'.

Being the 4th released episode, the Special Effects are getting more dramatic & sophisticated. Again the video & audio is top notch. For example, during one of the big battle scenes, the approach of a squadron of massive armoured vehicles rumbled the house for a protracted period - I thought that a freight train was passing down our street!! Furthermore, the imagination that the computer animators used to render the different ships, vehicles, robots & weapons is quite phenomenal - very talented folks.

As I mentioned in the 'Deals Thread' - today I received a $33 refund from FS under their Price Protection Plan. $97 for a S590 is more than an excellent buy...

Going to watch Finding Nemo on 3D blu-ray tonight. This replaces my DVD version. Should be a big improvement. May have to pick up a pizza and some beer to go with it.

It's harder eating with the 3d glasses on in a darkened room. Oops spilt the beer again!

I just finished re-watching the extended editions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the first two yesterday and the last one today. Overall The Fellowship of the Ring stands way above the other two especially for re-watching. However, as the movies progressed they just get more and more boring. It feels like when Peter Jackson re-wrote the original two scripts into three movies he mostly just divided up the last one into two movies because when it comes to substance I get the impression that there is about one movie's worth between the two.

I don’t recall being this disappointed on the first watch though either of the theatrical versions or the extended editions probably because I wanted to see how the story was treated and also the eye candy. However, the second time through the extended editions and many of the scenes just drag on and on. Most of the things I loved about Fellowship of the Ring the character development and interaction along with the general sense of discovery and wonder seem mostly missing from the two sequels.

Another problem I noticed with the two sequels is the jumping around between the different story arcs. I felt the same problem with most of the remake of Battlestar Galactica. And for me it has something to do with the presentation since not all movies that jump around bother me. Some examples of movies that handle it well for me are The Hunt for Red October and The Longest Day, both movies I have watched dozens of times and will often watch again.

If I was to rate these movies on how much they grabbed my attention Fellowship is a home run, Two Towers a single and Return of the King a base on balls.

Dean, I like your rating system. I agree with you--I've rewatched "Fellowship" numerous times, but the other two not so much.

After a nice New Years Eve dinner at our favourite restaurant, we came home & popped in ST Episode II - 'Attack of the Clones'.

Although Episode IV (the first one) is still my favourite, this is the most impressive one yet with epic battle scenes, superb special effects & tremendous LFE. This one really shakes the house numerous times. Again, excellent video & audio throughout.

The only negative to our quiet NYE celebration was earlier in the evening my wife called from work (ER Nurse at our hospital) that our favourite car (1999 Grand Prix GTP 2 door coupe) was a victim of a hit & run in the hospital parking lot. An eye witness saw it happen - the 2 female 'model citizens' got out of their car, surveyed the damage & then took off without leaving their particulars. RCMP attended but because the plate number couldn't be seen due to darkness, it looks like we'll be stuck with at least the deductable cost. Probably $1500 damage to the left front fender & headlight. Grrrr....

Lets see hospital requires employees to work there, provide their own transportation, park in the designated parking spots, but if transportation is vandalized, employee must pay for the damages.

Yup, it's the Canadian way. It's all the worse as our medical system is government run & our BC car insurance is run by the provincial government as well.

Hit & run is despicable & so prevalent up here now with most of our populace. It's the thing to do - run away from your responsibilities.

I confirmed with the claims lady that unless they are found or they turn themselves in, then we are on the hook for the $500 deductable as our pair of 'model citizens' (2 young women) didn't own up to their error. It's highly unlikely in either event that they will be found.

So it's goodbye to 500 bucks. Nice way to start the New Year...

I always thought with BC insurance (extend that to all government run insurance) all accidents both parties are responsible for their own repairs/deductibles regardless of how it happens.
