For those looking for a great player. These are refurb, but less than $300.

They keep saying that the Axiom message boards are free, but it just cost me $278.31. I absolutely could not pass up a 2200 at that price. One caveat, according to rep at e-cost they won't be in stock until April 12.

Excellent!! I got a Denon 2200 about a month ago for $550 new. Haven't hooked up the DVD-A yet but your Floyd DVD inspired me to - probably this weekend. The 2200 is noticeably better with my Infocus X1 than my RP91 was - plus the 2200 handles video material (read: Family Guy collection) WAY better than the RP91 did.

Mark, I had a good experience with ecost for a Denon DVM-4800 5 disc. It was about 30% of MSRP. Hope yours works out as well as mine did.

Yeah, I want to get this but I just do not have the money right now. I will have to wait until after my internship this summer. Denon will likely come out with a DVI Denon Link player to replace the 2200 by then anyways. But I really want this player now!

Andy, if what I read is true, Denon will be introducing 5 DVD new players in the last third of the year. I have absolutely no other details, but I've seen this info in three disparate locations.

Does somebody want to tell me what is the bee's knee's about this DVD player to the otherwise DVD illiterate (Read: me).

My old player that I bought 3 or so years ago was aronud $300 bucks and seems to work just great. The layer change sometimes is a little slow, but it's usually not very distracting. It is a panasonic (don't know the model number), with DTS and DD encoding built in.

I'm just wondering whether it is also time to upgrade this, and what the benefit would be. What else is there besides sound and picture (both of which seem to be great on my system)

thanks

It plays SACDs and DVD-As. That's the attraction for me. The Pioneer that everyone talks about around here also does, but it costs about the same (right, guys?) and has had some quality issues.

So is it mostly the playback features (ability to play DVD-A and SACD)? Or is there also a benefit in buying a new player because video and sound DACs have gotten better?

Basically, would there be any reason to get a new player if my old player otherwise works great, and I'm not interested in DVD-A and SACD?

It also has bass management for SACD & DVD-A were you can specify the crossover it's not fixed like the Pioneers.

Are you sure you want to do this. These are refurbed, aren't they and I don't think you get a warrantee, either.

The x-over on the 2200 and 2900 is not adjustable, it is fixed at 80hz for all formats, unlike the Pio 563 which is all over the board depending on the format.

cool, good to see some people took advantage.

My understanding is that it comes w/ a 1 yr warranty, even though it's refurbed. I have this player w/ my plasma and I'm VERY happy. Only thing I would've wanted is DVI but the 5900 is WAY outta my league.

The refurb / B-stock from ecost usually comes with a 90 day warranty. You can usually add a 1 year (non-Denon) extended warranty. I got the extended (for $30) with the DVM-4800 I bought from ecost in November. Based on the research I did before making that purchase, the equipment is in excellent condition when you get it and if there are problems, Denon stands behind it.

The only caution - Denon sends the equipment out to liquidate when they have a decent quantity. It might be months before soemthing shows up. You should always call to see if they actually HAVE the equipment before ordering. Sometimes they don't and the "expected delivery date" ecost quotes keeps slipping.

Mark, at the price you are paying, that will be a very special purchase. Hell, it's almost disposable . At the very least, you'll have a great player for the 2nd TV if Denon comes up with these new units. Have you heard anything on the delivery of the 2200?

Did you guys see that the 2900 and even the 5900 are available as well? This is the first time the 5900 has been available as a "b-stock" purchase from an authorized Denon dealer.

Am I the only one for whom the link no longer works? When I search I see the 2900 and 5900, but no more 2200s available.

Yeah, I did look briefly at the 2900. If I didn't have a 1600, that might be a good purchase. I want to see what Denon comes up with this fall with their rumored 5 new models.

Great News Mark - let us know how it works out. BTW - I just checked ecost and the 5900 and 2900 are still listed at the top of the page.

Apparently the little truck icon means that Denon has told them that the stuff is being shipped, but ecost doesn't have it yet. They take preorders (like yours) and send them out when they arrive. I expect they take them off the listing when they get orders equal to what Denon said would be coming.

Anyhow, looking forward to a report.

I got my 2200 and set it up tonight. My first impressions are as follows...

Much better bass when listening to SACD's and DVDA's...this may be a calibration issue, however.

PQ is awesome...I've been watching "The Fifth Element" Superbit DVD, and I do not remember ever seeing something so lovely on my TV

There is an annoying distortion in the center channel as I watch above DVD...Yet to see if this is present on other discs as well.

Mark, as this was a refurb unit from an etailer, it might be worthwhile to share info like how it was to deal with them, the condition of the unit from a cosmetic perspective, the packing, etc. Any other upside/downside you think of. I expect some folks are squeamish about this kind of purchase and the details might help them decide if the $$ savings are worth the risk. I had a good experience with ecost on a Denon DVM-4800 and will go this route again.

The e-cost experience was very good. They originally said that the units would not be in stock until April 12, but when I checked on my order status on the 7th, I found that the unit had already shipped, and was to be delivered the next day.

The unit arrived in what looked like the original factory packaging, which appeared to have been opened and taped back up. Stamped on the carton was a notice that it was a B-stock unit, and had a 90 day warrantee.

Inside the box were the player, wrapped in a plastic bag, in intact styrofoam holders, and the usual packet containing the remote, manual, cables, and batteries. The unit has no cosmetic blemishes that I can detect, other than some of what appears to be a little adhesive (residue from tape?) on the top of the unit. So far, it works as it should.

The unit is guaranteed for 90 days, an extra 1 year of protection is available for about $30. My thinking is that if the unit is going to fail, it will probably do it immediately, so I am mostly interested in protection from a DOA, and I passed on the extended warrantee.

I would not hestiate to buy from them again. Last I checked, they had 2900's for about $500, and 5900's for about $1000.

Mark,

I've found that just about any of the "orange" cleaners work great in taking off adhesives. Ask the Mrs. to pick up a bottle of orange Fantastic next time shes shopping (unless of course, you do the shopping). A little shot of that on a paper towel should fix you right up.

Thanks. I was going to ignore it, as it is not visible with the player in my rack, but I'll keep the orange cleaner thing in mind.

I guess that I should chime in and give another thumbs up to eCost. The 2200 was very well packaged and I could only find one tiny nick on the faceplate. You have to be about 5" from the unit so I'll never notice it. My only frustration was getting the darn thing to send a signal to the sub. I had all the speakers set to "Large" and sub set to "Yes" which sounds correct, but NO. I had to set Filter to On and also set Bass Enhancement to On and them boom boom. I'd like to strangle the moron who came up with those EXTREMELY redundent settings. Just can't keep it simple can they? Anyway, I'm listening to my 2200 right now and it sounds great and the picture is just as good. There's my $.02

Have you thrown in the "In Absentia" DVD-A yet? My son now has all his friends listening to Porcupine Tree. I love my rep as the dad with the cool musical tastes.

I am also using my 2200 right now (LOTR:TTT), and it looks and sounds great

Mark,

You always used to champion the Pioneer 563A and would wonder why people spend so much on expensive universal players. Are you noticing any obvious difference between the players yet?

I am definitely going to get a Denon player at the end of the summer, but it would be interesting to know how much of a difference there is between the budget Pioneer and the Denon.

Snippy;

You sure have a good memory. Mostly I got miffed because some snooty "audiophile" on the Spot said the 563 wasn't worth getting unless you had tin ears. I liked my 563, and I don't think I have bad hearing. I never thought that my 563 was as good as a Denon 5900, I just believe in diminishing returns with audio gear, and at over 10 times the cost of the 563 I don't believe the 5900 is 10 times the DVD player.

I never would have retired the 563 except for the fact that my tax refund arrived at the same time as the deal on e-cost, and it seemed too good to pass up. I also couldn't get around the fact that the crossover frequency for SACD was so high, though I did not actually have a concrete idea of what that was doing to the sound.

I haven't had the 2200 for very long yet, so my impressions are based on very little data, but the PQ seems noticably better with the Denon unit. I expected this...I always said the the 563 had comparable PQ to other players in its price range, and it does. The Denon has better video chips (I think), and performs better.

For DVD-A and SACD I have to admit that the bass is a bit punchier with the 2200, otherwise I cannot hear much difference.

I still feel that the 563 is an outstanding value. For only a few dollars more than a regular old DVD player you can experience high res audio.

The jump from CD to DVD-A and SACD is like an order of magnitude...the step up from the 563 to the 2200 is much smaller.

I hope this clarifies things.

Mark

WooHoo!!!

Finally received my refurb DVD-2200 from E-Cost. Delayed because they had to send it to Canada. Good old customs and Canada Post had it for a week before they decided I could have it.

Regardless plugged in my new SACD disk of Dark Side of the Moon and wow what a difference!!! DVD audio is great but SACD is unreal. As for video even on just a regular RPTV the picture is great not that it wasn't before from my
DVD-1600 but I can notice the difference. Seems to be warmer and sharper at the same time.

One very small nick on the front, the only thing I could notice to make it a refurb. Excellent deal.

Lorenzo - just curious. Did you have a 1600? If so, why the switch to the 2200? And then, how does the PQ compare for the two?

Hi Ray:

I switched because I got the great deal on the refurb from E-Cost like Mark did. As far as PQ (picture quality???)I'm not sure if there's a great deal of difference but to me the picture on my Sony RPTV (not progressive or HD ready) looks warmer and sharper at the same time. Don't get me wrong the 1600 was great but the opportunity to have a universal player at that price point just couldn't be passed up.

BTW, SACD's are awesome!!!

I am really enjoying mine as well. One unanticipated bonus...the unit's performance on plain old redbook CD playback.

One of the quirks with my system is that stereo mode (which includes sub) on my receiver doesn't sound very good. Consequently, I listened to CD's on "Pure mode", which sends the raw analog signal (immediately after D/A conversion) to the power amp section without further processing, but does not include the sub. Since the 2200 has better bass management than the 563 I was using previously, I can use the 2200's D/A converters, send the analog signal to my receiver, including bass information sent to the sub channel, and have the best of both worlds.

I thought CD's sounded awesome before...now with the addition of sub they sound even better!

Mark

P.S. Right now I'm listening to Luther Allison's "Live in Chicago" This amazing record, recorded at the Chicago Blues Festival in 1995, 2 years before Allison's untimely death from cancer, is an amazing example of contemporary electric blues. If you like blues, you must listen to this CD. Sound quality is excellent as well.

Mark,

I already have a JVC DVD-A player, but I want to get the Denon to be able to get into SACD

Lorenzo,

I do not know why you think that SACD is so much better than DVD-A. Most people who compare the same release on both formats (a la Diana Krall) tend to prefer DVD-A. I am not disaggreeing with you, I am just curious why you think that SACD is so much better?

I'm curious as well. I don't think one format sounds noticably better than the other.

Mark, Snippy:

Hmmm, well maybe it's actually not as I obviously haven't compared the same recordings in SACD and DVD-A but for me at least the 2200 seems like a bit of an upgrade as far as sound quality goes from my 1600 so maybe that's the difference. I can tell you though the first disc I put in, Dark Side of the Moon was amazing. I will pull out the few DVD-A's I own and compare some more. I do believe the 2200 is a great player though, save for the missing resume feature on movies, close to perfect for me.

I've had mine for a bit now agree with all comments. It looks brand new, the image/audio quality is great, and the only thing I could find was small scratch under the remote.

The only issue I have with it is the load time. It takes about 10 seconds to load a CD or DVD. This seems rather long if you're in front of the player changing disks for a couple of hours.

Well after listening to a few DVD-A discs I've come to the conclusion that both these and SACD's sound great although I have to say that I like the sound on the one SACD I currently own, Dark Side of the Moon, immensely. Diana Krall, and Yes Fragile are both great on DVD-A. I think overall the sound is a slight improvement over my 1600.

Mark,

Sorry folks, this is not an attempt to hijack the thread. I have a question about 563a. I just got one and am finding trouble accessing the two channel hi rez track on sacds. It only plays 5.1 track. What do I need to do to get this track?

I had the opposite trouble. It's in the dvd players on-screen setup menu's. Poke around in there and you'll find it.

They had them for a week or so but then sold out. They were refurbs at a great price. With E-Cost you just have to keep your eye out as they get different items in.

The Denon DVD-5900 just reappeared on eCost today for a little over a grand so I had to jump on it. Sounds like some of you guys have had good experiances with the "b" stock/refurb's from them.

I did however add a two year extended warranty for $117.00 to go with it. Still about $600.00 cheaper then anywhere else and Denon's manufacturers warranty is only 1 year.

The deal is back for the 2200. It is $295 at the Denon refurb websites. Pretty damn good deal.

I couldn't find the Denon 2200 in stock at any Denon authorized internet dealers. No big deal, I'll wait until eCost has it in stock again (I can only hope).

I do have concerns about the availability of the extended warranty though. I checked with both eCost and the warranty provider and they both said this warranty is only valid in the US, despite the details section explaining that it is transferrable to anyone in the US, Canada or Puerto Rico.

Does anyone have warranty experience with eCost they can tell us about? How about knowledge of companies that extend warranty coverage into Canada?

Thanks.

I read the shootout of DVD players on hometheaterhifi.com and they rated a couple of Panasonics pretty highly, the RP-82 being the one that got me interested. As it turns out two other models RP-56 and CP-72 were similar (Sage-Faroudja chip) and I found them in some closeout stock at the Panasonic Store locally. $85 for each, the 5 disc CP-72 being new in the box. All 3 of these Panasonics rated slightly above the Denon 2200.

I believe the CP-72 is the 5 disc version of the RP-82 (could be wrong, I'm relying on memory here). Good unit, but I have seen comments about the tray mecahnics not being the most reliable. Excellent PQ AND it plays 5 CDs. For $85, it's a steal. However, if you can grab a RP-82 for $85, get as many as they will sell you. This was the reference player about 1 1/2 years ago and people were going nuts trying to find one last year. I know I looke long & hard and could not find one. I ended up with the Denon 1600 (which uses the guts of the RP-82) and I'm still thrilled with it.
