Magnificent.
"I love you, Alex Rogan!"
I laughed out lout when the flight engineer was trying to restore power in the gunstar and he held up a circuit board with some leds and a 9 volt battery snap connector.
I loved every minute.

I LIKED the cheesiness of that movie. Of course it's been like 25 years since I've seen it, so my perception might be off...

Cheesy is an understatement. The musical score ripped off raiders of the lost ark. But the story is good. And as silly as this movie is I wish more modern movies could tell a story this well.

I recall not liking it as a kid and I was a HUGE SciFi nerd. I can't really remember why though so perhaps I'll watch it again. What could happen?

I liked it as a kid, but now that I am re-remembering it, I am sure that it would seem so full of cheese and low budget feel if I watched it again today.

Hmm... maybe its an age/scifi fan thing for me. I wasn't a kid when I watched it, and it fails as scifi, at least to me.

I bought The Last Starfighter on blu-ray about 2 years ago. Used to have it on VHS. I still think it's a fun movie to watch.

I watched 'African Queen' on Blu-Ray (colourized version) the other night. Still a great story if not a bit hokey by today's standards.
Interestingly the only soundtrack option was 2.0 Stereo using only my M22s, but it did not detract in any way. In fact, the dialogue was clearer than 80% of the modern stuff that I've experienced lately.
While I like today's technology, sometimes I think that the audio mixing guys are trying to jam in too much with multi-channel soundtracks that can result in a jumbled audio mess at times...

Wasn't scifi? Space ships, aliens, cars that fly? Scifi!
OK, not good, but then again neither is Dr. Who and a bunch of you all like that stuff. Don't get me wrong, I tried to watch it. But a few years ago, I watched as some cheesy "plastic monster" and mannequins coming to life. Then the aliens that looked like people but had zippers up their backs and farted all of the time. Yeah, that is quality TV right there. After 4 episodes, I quit.

Lab, I agree about old movies. They may not have had fancy sound but the dialog is perfectly clear and intelligible. The lighting was damn good too.

Yeah, that is quality TV right there. After 4 episodes, I quit. I think your ranting at the wrong person. Poor Fred isn't a Doctor Who fan, (Well maybe he is and I just don't know it.) and since I'm assuming you are 'mostly' venting at me, I never said that the movie "failed". I just said I recalled not liking it but I was even willing to try it again.... I'll give you one thing though. That mannequin Season 1 episode was a disaster. I refuse to acknowledge it exists. WEll, except this once and only to say it shouldn't exist. In fact, I too struggled with the first several episodes but eventually, the imaginative story lines and the witty banter grew on me. The semi-modernized monster costumes have a certain bit of cheesiness remaining in them on purpose to honor the original series that was famous for it's super low budget effects. It's a balance effect that tips the scale in one direction or the other sometimes. Too modern the hard core fans complain, too cheesy, people like you complain. Anywhoo, I like it, you hate it. That's what I love about the world. Diversty. All is good.

Yeah, for some reason someone(s) at the Beeb have an extraordinary interest in the Autons and/or the Nestene Consciousness. They chose that episode (of all episodes) to show for the 3rd Doctor, too.
I'd say "Dalek" was when the new series really started to hit its stride and show its potential.

But isn't the word SciFi derived from two words: Science and Fiction. Both have science elements in them, and are fiction. (I know, I know, sorry kids, but The Jetsons aren't real. So technically they are SciFi... Good SciFi? That is a whole different question. I did like The Jetsons when I was a kid. Dr. Who and The Last Starfighter? Meh... Yup. I threw that one out there two. Maybe The Last Starfighter and The Jetsons will team up against the Doctor in this epic battle. (Maybe they should have an Epic Rap Battle of History about it. YouTube that if you don't know what it is.) Here is Doc Brown vs. Dr. Who: Epic Rap Battle of History Doc vs. Doctor

Pretty soon Dr. Who will be put up against pretty much every sci-fi show. LOL
You know that the plastic special effects were better in Predator than Dr. Who's special effects, and Predator had those goofy long fingers that the actor couldn't articulate. Boom!

Or the third... oh well, you get it. Would you continue to date a woman after the first few dates were bad? There's probably many women who don't make a good first impression but who would be great in a long-term relationship. TV shows are not people, though, so this is probably a bad analogy.

yes, sometimes you need a car.

Oh my... They have their own union... A union that makes perfect copies of imperfectly made, cheap robots. that is probably harder than replicating something that was made with precision and not meant to look like an odd shaped box with styrofoam ball halves glued to it, with a toilet plunger for the right hand of the guy inside, and some random stuff (which actually looks OK) for their left hand to manipulate. OK. I will really stop ripping on Dr. Who. There is a large population of people that really like the show, and that is great. It is obviously fitting a niche there. Besides, I've got my own TV show that is just rediculous. My family and I have been watching Revolution on TV. (between seasons right now) That show has some of the worst writing, so many plot holes, so many bipolar characters (anyone can flip from sane to insane, calm to psychotic, rational to unrational, etc in seconds just to fit the bad writting. We sit there, as a family, and even say outloud, "Why are we watching this? It is so bad." Yet we still watch it.

Well maybe, but one that's been around for 50 years. Crazy Ford Mustangs and thier silly 50 year old niche product. They should stop making those cars cause not everybody likes them. they should only make a car that everyone likes. Car Analogy FTW!!!

Hmmm. I think that they're cool. Can't wait to get one. The picture is a 2003 model. They've changed a little since then.

I personally do not like the look but I will stick up for you Cat in that they are extremely capable off road vehicles right from off the lot. Although I know that wasn't a concern of yours. I've shared trails with a few and the soft suspension with good clearance really works well. Although you will probably not like what the soft suspension does for cornering.
One thing though, the tires in that particular pic would be absolutely useless for anything but sand. Of course, I'm sure they probably are not stock.
Avoid the 2008 and 2009 models for reasons that I probably don't have to explain.

Ya know, every something purely awesome can be made into a full on turd. Bugatti Veyron in pink ugliness: And some things boring and dull, can't be fixed no matter what. Here is a Honda Civic. I loved the tag under the original photo I saw "Only missing 14.9L of engine displacement." I wonder which on the doctor would drive? Correct answer: Neither. He has his Turdis: <--See what I did there?

I remember the first time I test drove an FJ. Sidewalk in the way? No problem, didn't even feel a bump.
I had just test drove all of the other suv's that I had my eye on, which were several of them. They drove ok. Some more comfy than the others. Some you could feel the road more than the others. Then I tried an FJ just at a whim, since I saw one on the lot. It was one of those times where I couldn't stop smiling on the inside. It drove like a dream compared to the other ones. And made you feel like you were driving a tank that could go anywhere.

You should buy something that'll make you happy. I saw an all black FJ in town the other day. I think that's the best color since all the strange angles of the body sort of become invisible.

I wonder if those type of people watch Dr. Who?
Probably not. Dr. Who fans aren't as trendy with the pink shirt/tie combos, and don't appreciate the important things like the "TOYOTA" word logo on the grill instead of just the Toyota symbol logo.

EDIT: This started as a post to torture Nick with a Doctor Who spoof, music video. However, rather then torment him with lousy music and spoofery, here is a well done fan preview of the coming season. As you can see, the zipper costumes and fart humor has long been abandoned over the newer seasons. The Last Great Time War I don't expect you to convert. Nor should you. I just wanted to show that the entire series is no longer what it began as.

Yeah, I was talking to another Axiomite on Facebook (whom shall remain nameless) and I told him that I was just doing the anti-Dr. Who stuff to stir the pot and at the time there was very little happening here on the forums. Glad you could take it all in stride.

Now he would have been a great candidate for the new 'elderly' Doctor. Not a final choice maybe, but I bet the audition would have been hilarious.

What is funny is that it came up as a "suggested" video. Considering I haven't searched for anything Dr Who related in a while, I was surprised too.

Review of the last starfighter movie in blu-ray:
I bought and watched it about 2 years ago. It looked a lot like the DVD version, which looked a lot like the VHS version.
