I sent Amie a PM on several topics including the above Q and I guess she's MIA for the moment, so here goes: Anyone know if an M22 In-Wall can be configured in a W-T-W configuration? We're putting in-walls in the new house and I love symmetry, so the choice is M3 L/R and M100 Center - As in-Walls they all have the same physical dimensions, but the center would be missing some low end. If the M22 can be configured as WTW, I'd have both physical and acoustic symmetry.

Scott, what does "configured" imply in your question? As you know, the M22 is a T/W/W design.

yep, but could it be configured in WTW as a horizontal center? My initial thought was no, but I had to ask. I figured the W's were in the same chamber to develop a lower bottom end.

That would be a significant redesign and I doubt that Axiom would consider it. Besides the different enclosure, presumably the crossover would also be modified because of the different dispersion pattern.

Are three vertical M22 in-walls not feasible?

Unfortunately this is for use with a 41" flat screen over a fireplace, so no vertical center. Talk about a sore neck! As it is I'm contemplating inverting the L and R speakers to get the tweeters lower, especially if I end up with M22's. At that they will still be well over the tops of heads while seated.

But, from a very reliable source

Question for anyone willing to answer, would 3 VP100's be detrimental/not recommended?

To the greatest extent possible, vertically oriented front speakers should be used for wide and smooth horizontal dispersion. If space available makes a vertical center unfeasible, a combination such as the vertical M22 mains with a VP100 center, which Scott mentions, should be satisfactory.

So, Scott, what you really want is a ported VP100. I agree with John's assessment.

FWIW, I had been using a regular VP100 as a center for a long time and I replaced it with a vertical M2, which I like a little better. It seems a little clearer and it plays a little deeper. Since I don't need the horizontal form-factor or high output, it works well for me.

Something else to consider with speakers, especially M22's, mounted above the TV (or beside the TV, up high.) Having both above and below the TV, I found they sound the best throughout the room with the M22's facing flat forward, tweeters at the top. Although this cuts off some tweeter action in the room, it is better than when I had the speakers tilted downward. If you were in the back of the room, you'd hear too much tweeter, and the sound got worse on the ears because of it.

Just something else to consider.

Looks like I'm OK for the center channel install, but left and right is going to be a bit of a project... I've got 2 studs between each of the usual 16" spaced studs on both left and right install positions - picked up with one stud finder but not another. Because there is a fireplace involved in the equation I don't want to start hacking out wood just for the sake of installing speakers - the studs might actually be doing something...

So I finally got around to starting the in-wall install... First, had to figure out where I wanted them to go, leaving room for a larger TV, if ever needed...

Then, I had to cut out the drywall - Fridays are good pajama days...

Then, put the templates back up and see what areas I need to work on...

The center channel was a bit taller than I had room for, so I notched the cross brace so the ears would flip up correctly and pull on the drywall properly.

The offending studs were not load bearing, so I cut out 3-1/3" of the 5-1/2", then blocked the opening with 2 x 4's...

Nice pictures, Scott! I like seeing a person with confidence document a project. I've yet to undertake my first drywall project. I've seen a lot of ugly drywall work...


Also, FYI. If you want to link directly to pictures or files in your dropbox -- and avoid having the dropbox branding tacked on in a header -- generate the public link as you normally would and then just add "?dl=1" to the end of it.

This is the fault of the forum software. It doesn't like image links that don't end in .jpg, .gif, or .png.

Try this alternative. Take your original link, leave off the '?dl=1' part, and switch the 'www' to 'dl'.

so how do they sound?

Really good. Better than the in wall M2's in the previous house. I may add the EP500 to the mix after Christmas - the tree is where I would put it...
I have not had a chance to listen to any CD's - I have to find them first. But we've watched a couple of movies and it sounds great (3.0 system for now).

lol ! I was playing the Prelude to Bach's Cello suite No 1 in stereo mode and you have to get right to the edge of the mantle to figure out that the center channel isn't on, otherwise it sounds like the cello is right in the middle of the fireplace. On the flip side (multiple instruments vs single), playing The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over CD and sitting back on the couch, the sound stage is quite wide - you (ok, I) can pick out each guitar across the stage - pretty cool. The previous JVC satellites that I was using certainly didn't do that.

Looks like good for the middle route set up, but left and right is going to be a bit of a project.
