Below is the email reply I received from Andrew Welker:

/* Hi Dave,

The v4 subwoofers do not have any type of auto signal
sensing. The trigger connection will allow you to put the
sub into standby mode when not in use. The trigger
connection is a standard 1/8" / 3.5mm phone jack which is
the same size and type found on many headphones. Your
processor or receiver then needs to have a trigger control
output delivering anything from 9-12V, which is fairly
typical. If you need any assistance in making this
connection, please feel free to shoot me an e-mail.

Shielding becomes important if you have a long-term cable broadcast antenna nearby, or current carrying conductors parallel to the part of your cable run.
