I just purchased a Yamaha rx-v2400 and I currently have a set of Bose 701 and 5.1 Yamaha cls 150 with a sw-4 subwoofer. I was wondering how the m60ti would compare with the Bose. I have an 18 x 16 room where I have mounted the surround speakers from the ceiling. What speaker system would Axiom recommend to match this system. Also could anyone explain what a presence speaker is?

Ok, the axioms will probbly blow those blose to peices, you will never know why you ever thought they sounded good!

i have no idea what a "presence speaker" is. never heard of that term in my life. where did you hear it from?. i get the feeling your talking about a center channel but i really have no idea.

You'll probably find the M60s very much superior to your Bose. I had 301s before I got a set of M22s, and I found the difference enlightening.

I, too, have never heard of a "presence speaker." Can you put that term in context? Where did you hear that phrase? I've heard of a speaker having "presence." That, to me, means having a smooth, uncolored sound which provides the sense that the musicians and vocalists are present in the room with you. But, that may not be the technically correct definition of the word "presence" when applied to a speaker, so don't hold me to it.

The "presence" speakers are a feature of the Yamaha 1400 and 2400 receivers. The presence speakers are supposed to be smaller, direct-radiating speakers that mount above and behind the main front speakers. As their name indicates, they are supposed to give a little more "presence" to the front soundstage. I've never heard this for myself. I don't own any Yamaha receivers but I've read about these presence channels. They are lower wattage channels that are matrixed from the L&R front channels, I believe.

One disadvantage of using the 2 presence channels is you can't drive a set of back 6th and 7th speakers AND use the presence channels at the same time. The current Yamahas can't drive all speakers in this 9.1 setup at the same time. Maybe the new RX-Z9 will have this capability.

Dan, I briefly listened to the 701s at a store about two years and can only recall a rather loud but boomy and ill-defined bass. Gene DellaSala did include them in a speaker faceoff which tends to indicate that these weren't among the better speakers Bose ever made. I would think that the M60s would give you significantly clearer bass, midrange and highs.

Jason is correct as to the "presence" speakers feature on your 2400, which can be used to have amps 6 and 7 drive two extra presence speakers located in the front instead of driving the back surround speakers. These apparently would reproduce extra reverberation in DSP modes(e.g. concert hall, beer garden, sportin' house, etc.). Didn't hear it on the 2400 setup I had a little experience with.

I noticed the Axiom's were not reviewed with these. I wonder if they had been how they would have rated. I guess I am asking if the m60's are the same or better than the pinnacle gold tower.

Here is Yamaha's definition of Presence. I got this directly in the manual.

"Presence speakers supplement the sound from the front speakers with extra ambient effects produced by CINEMA DSP. These effects include sounds that filmmakers intend to locate a little farther back behind the screen in order to create more theater-like ambience. Place these speakers at the front of the room about 0.5 - 1m outside the front speakers, facing slightly inwards, and about 1.8m above the floor"

I also didn't know the what Presence means until I got my RX-V1400. It will be interesting having 10 speakers. The drawback is my wallet will be lighter.
