Got my HK 630 tonite! Hot damn this thing is cool. I've been a cheap ass too long, finnaly got some Dolby Digital love in my home.
Anyway gotta question; I know this thing does not have upconversion to component (not using any component). This question is in reguards to composite and S Video.
I hooked the AVR to the TV with S Video. On screen display works and all that... I hooked the DVD to the AVR with composite and the picture wasn't displaying on the TV (heard the sound). Switched the output on the AVR to composite to the TV and saw the DVD source.
...weird
So I get to moving connections around etc etc and all of a sudden it works fine! I could use S Vid or composite in any combination between the TV, AVR and DVD.
...weirder
So for testing I currently have the S Vid from the AVR to the TV's video1 and the composite on the AVR to the TV's video2. Can see the on screen display using either source. DVD works fine on both using S Vid to the AVR. Now add in VCR using composite to the AVR... back to the previous issue where the picture only displays on the TV when I output from the AVR with composite!
What is going on and what did I do to fix the same issue before!?

I'm not sure I understand completely what your saying, but it sounds simular to what I did when I was hooking up my h/k.
See what happens when you select input on your tv remote.
My tv has a seperate s-video input that works only after I push the input button on my tv remote. When I push it again it goes to channel 03 which my direct tv is set for.
Dont know if any of that makes since.
Hope so

I think my situation is different... The equivalient to input on my TV would switch between: tuner, Video1 and Video2.
Currently I have both the composite and S-Vid connects going to my TV (as a workaround and troubleshooting). The S-Vid is going to Video1 on the TV and the composite is going to Video2. (I'll call these connections TV-Vid1 and TV-Vid2. I'll call the HK's HK-Vid1, HK-Vid2, etc)
My DVD is currently connected to the HK using S-Vid. On the TV I see the display on both TV-Vid1 and TV-Vid2.
Now the VCR is connected to the HK-Vid2 on the HK with a composite connection. On the TV I only see a display when I select TV-Vid2 which is the composite cable from the HK.
I also have my ReplayTV connected to HK-Vid1 on the HK with a composite connection (same as the VCR). And same as the VCR only see a display on TV-Vid2.
Summary:
If I connect to the HK using S-Vid the HK's output in either composite OR S-Vid works fine.
If I connect to the HK using composite I only see output from the HK's composite monitor output.
It's like S-Vid can be converted to composite but composite won't convert to S-vid.

UPDATE
Got this from HK support today
In reply to:
Good morning and thank you for your inquiry. The AVR630 does not allow up-converting of any video signal, but, will allow down-conversion from an S-Video signal to a composite signal.
Thanks again for your e-mail, and please let us know if you have any other questions.
Bummer, guess I never thought about composite to S-vid being an upconversion but I suppose it would be. Sure makes using the AVR as a switch between all my video sources more difficult.

thst does suck.. my onkyo 701 will up-convert everything to s-video, but not to component. you have to go to the 901 before it will up convert to component.. but, its all good. ya gotta work with what ya got !!

Just grab a cheapo composite-Svideo converter plug That's what I did for my VCR hookup. No problems! You can get them from various places, but don't pay more than $20 for it.

I'm in the same boat as BigJohn (I have the 601). I have both s-video and component hooked up to my TV and use whichever one I can. DVD and XBOX are component. PS2 and VCR and out from PC are s-video.

One (new) additional question...
I'm unable to get the HK to lock on the DTS signal my DVD player is sending out. I've only tried Rush Hour two, which is 6.1 DTS aparently. My DVD is an OLD Panasonic, it does do DTS but I'm wondering if teh fault lies with it.
Any ideas?

Did you select the DTS option off the movies set-up menu?
