I am finally finishing up my subwoofer that i made over a year ago. I am wrapping the subwoofer with some kind of mahogany board that i got from a family member. I want to stain the wood but i want it to try and match closely to the boston cherry finish on all my axioms. Does anyone know a stain that would come close in color?

it would be nearly impossible to recommend a stain to match since all woods take stain differently. If you have scrap mahogany board available, there's nothing like trial and error.

Call around to some local paint stores to see if they make custom stains. I have one by me in NJ that does that. Just bring a scrap piece of the wood to stain and one of the speakers to them. It's worked for me several times.

alright i might give that a try. I might just give it a black stain to it because it might blend into stuff better and not be as noticeable. It still will be since its a 9 cubic ft box.

I had some stain that I got from Minwax that was darn close to the Boston Cherry. I was building a shelf for my center at the time. It took a bit of looking but I would look into it. The stain I got was darn close. I don't have the bottle anymore so I can't help you with the number etc.

Try looking here for a small sample of Minwax stains (Thanks to the SVS website).

Hope this helps...

Home Depot has a method of matching paints when passed under their optical devices. I once used it to have them custom match an older paint colour that was no longer in production.

I suspect that it would be more complex, and require a pass of both the cherry finish, and the wood. Whether they could help provide a stain that when applied to an already shaded woodgrain may be another matter

2 words. Sherwin Williams. Click the link to go to the store locator.

I called the one closest to my house. The lady said that I could bring a sample of wood, and what I wanted to match to the store. She said that they generally need to keep the object you are matching, and the wood samples for a day so that they can ensure a good match. You may need to get Axiom to send you a small scrap of boston cherry vinyl. Unless you want to leave a QS8 with them overnight. They will mix, and let you look at the resulting stain on your wood samples before you buy it. They can mix stains for every type of wood.

Disclaimer: I have never used their stain, or had them mix any for me. I have a guy working for me that used to be a carpenter. He told me about Sherwin Williams' stains while I was discussing the trim in my house with him. I trust him, and he said they were excellent stains, and that they always did great with the color matching for him.
