I just ordered a VP100 to go with my M22s (M2s are next up). Now I need a good receiver to power them.

I've been searching and searching for the right machine, and finally I think I've narrowed it down to two contenders: Marantz SR4300 ($279 from Accessories4less) or Yamaha RX-V995 ($297 from Ebay). Which one would you choose?

As for me, I've been leaning toward the Marantz--simply because it's from a more reliable store, it's a slightly newer model, and I've never owned anything from that company--I'd like to try 'em out. But the Yamaha has a lot more power, was a pricier model when it first came out, and I already have a Yamaha integrated amp--so I trust the company for building solid equipment.

Any suggestions?

i would go with what you KNOW to be solid. yamaha makes good equip, and if it aint broke, dont fix it. plus, if it is rated for more watts, then its a win/win deal.

i aint aying nothing bad against marantz, but it just makes sense to stick with the products that you know to be reliable.. good luck with whatever choice you make.

i have marantz equipment, a sr6300 and a mm9000, both bought from accessories4less, the equiptment is wonderful, i had an onkyo receiver before, and the marantz, is every bit as good as the onkyo, if not better, there is zero noise, ever.. i only use the receiver for audio processing, sense i have the 5 channel dedicated amp....

you can rest assured that if you order from accessories4less, they will take GREAT care of you,(I got free shipping on my entire order…) i would be weary of buying electronics off of ebay, because #1 you get NO warrantee, and you dont know what jerk off owned it before you... ive gotten burned buying electronics off of ebay, so I personally would not go that route, but that’s just me.

good luck with your decision.

Yamaha has been accused of underpowering their products, also.

Thanks for the info. And Dakkon, I see your point about buying off ebay--not too much buyer protection.

I'll probably end up with a Marantz--just to play it safe. Thanks.

Arriving late again. Alan recommends Denon (I have a 3803). Check ecost, an authorized Denon etailer of refurb gear. Great savings and lotsa good experiences with them here on the board.

I've owned both Marantz and Yamaha receivers in the past. I can't honestly say which I liked bettter, cause they both provided things that the other didn't have, or didn't do quite as well.

Today Marantz is owned by Denon, and I think if I myself was going to narrow my purchase down to these two manufactors, I'd probably go with Marantz. They make an outstanding product, has do Yamaha. Truth be told I loved them both, but in the end I found Marantz to be the better of the two based on my ears, tastes, and likes.

Allow me to put my .02 in here. It's a nice Saturday afternoon, and my living room currently reeks of acrid smoke from the electrical fire in my Marantz receiver. This is twice now that this has happened with the same unit, and I won't be buying another one. Denon, here I come...

What a shame, Mike. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Try to look on the bright side. You get to indulge one's natural propensity to upgrade by getting a nice new receiver. . Of course, there is that nice big hole your wallet.................

Hope the bad smell is the only damage to your home. Hang in.

It IS unfortunate, because I've been a big advocate of Marantz for a while now. The first time this happened, I was willing to think it was an anomaly. It was repaired under warranty, and at the time, my natural assumption (uh-oh...) was that Marantz would upgrade/repair any problems that may have been endemic to this particular model. Now (and understand that my opinion is deeply clouded at the moment) my tendency is to believe that their products are just junk. They're well-reviewed, they sound great, but the quality control is apparently lousy. I live in an apartment. I'm not hitting 100db and rattling the walls. The @#$% unit did its impression of a Vietnamese Buddhist monk while I was watching TV. And it really, really pisses me off.

Of course, the next natural concern should be, what about Denon? The 3805 is awfully appealing. Ian recommends them, and I know there are plenty of Denon owners on this board. But Denon and Marantz DID recently merge, and the 3805 hasn't been out long enough to have much of an established track record in terms of QC. Any thoughts? Any 3802 or 3803 owners have any horror stories to tell? Yamaha is the runner-up candidate now.

I'm sorry to read that, Mike. I've read many horror stories like this and it makes one wonder about the QC across the spectrum with electronic equipment. I'm running a Yamaha now. I've used HK, Technics, Pioneer and Yamaha products over the years and the only one that gave me problems was an HK receiver, which lasted a year and a day.

Two beers later...

My apologies to anyone I may have offended with the immolation joke.

Now, my first instinct is to shiver like a junkie and run downtown tomorrow and buy something just to keep myself from going into AV withdrawal. Someone talk me out of this, please. I need to take my time, do my research, and (only then) make an informed, semi-objective purchase. So, the budget is $1K, give or take. I'd like something I can keep for several years, and I'd prefer it was something that didn't occasionally make my house smell like a chemical fire. Tell me why I don't want to save $300 or more and buy an RX-V2400 instead of a Denon unit.

Mike,
If it helps at all I have had my Denon 3805 for a few weeks now and I have punished it to say the least. Loud music, many a movie etc. It has yet to be turned off since I got it (I don't turn any of my stuff off....ever) and it has been flawless. I'm not the only one I know who has the 3805 and nobody I talked to today has had any problems. I mean none at all.....as for talking you out of something new............here goes.................go get the 3805. How was that? lol
