I bought the refb. Denon DVD 2200 from ecost; It should arrive today or tomorrow. Yey!
I know I’ll need the DVD audio cables (RCA) for the DVD-A and SACD, But I was wondering, for DTS and DD5.1; Is it better to use the receiver decoder or the DVD decoder? I guess the DVD decoders are better/newer than the Denon 3300.
Any opinions?

I've tried both and I couldn't hear any differences. since you have your analog cables already I would just use those and not spend the money on a coax or optical.

I personally would get the digital cable. I think it makes a huge difference. My receiver will automatically choose the appropriate decoding, your Denon will too.

Congratulations on your order! Mine arrived today.

I plan to just use analog cables. That way, I will only have to run one set of cables and I won't have the hassle of switching the source on my receiver depending on the format of the disc I want to play.

Although, since I've got some spare coax at home, I suppose I might as well at least try it at some point and see if it makes any difference. But, I really doubt it will.

Yeah, those digital connections and DAC'S where engineered for nothing.

Give me a break...

First of all, if you use the digital connection, the DVD player's DACs won't be involved at all. Look at the acronym: Digital to Analog Converter.

When you use the digital connection on the DVD player, the digital data on the disc is sent directly to your receiver and is converted to analog using the receiver's DAC.

When you use the analog connection on the DVD player, the digital data on the disc is coverted to analog using the DVD player's DAC and is then sent to the receiver.

There is little to no practical difference in DAC quality. Although, techinically, the specs of the DAC in the DVD-2200 are superior to the DACs in my AVR-884. So if there was a difference in DAC quality, it would be in favor of using analog connections.

There are only two real reasons I can think of to use the digital connections:

1) Your receiver supports digital decoding in a format which your player does not support (which is almost certainly not the case here).

2) You would prefer to run just one wire. However, it is worth noting that the digital connection either outputs a lowered-quality signal or no signal at all with some of the high-quality formats.

Still, as I said in my previous post, I am open to the possibility of the digital connection sounding better and will test it for myself.

Maybe you misinterpret my question, I’m definitely going to use a DAC for DD5.1 and DTS, of course. The question in the plate is, Which one? the DAC on the 2200 DVD player, or the DAC on the AVR3300?

According to this pdf document, the DACs in the Denon AVR-3300 are 24-bit/96 khz. The DACs in the DVD-2200 are 24-bit/192 khz. As I stated above, there should be no practical difference between these two DACs. However, the DACs in the DVD-2200 are technically superior. In order to use the DACs in the DVD-2200, you would use analog connections between the DVD-2200 and the AVR-3300.

Thanks a lot joshxfoo, that was what I though, the internals DAC on the DVD are ‘better’. I’ll use the DVD dacs, since anyways I need to use the analog cables (6 rca’s) for SACD, like you mention on your first post.
BTW: my message that you quoted was intended for tleigh...

I agree. The DVD player has very high quality DAC's. In this CASE I too would go with the analog connections. I'm getting the impression that I'm a little "old school" here.
It's known fact that receivers are always more advanced in technology than the equipment connecting to it. Obviously, not in this case . I also, looked at the specs after the fact. I just like the convenience of adjusting the format via the receiver not the DVD player
I walked into this one...

BTW, I wasn't trying to get in a pissing contest here. Sorry if I offended you.
