With Axioms subject to price increases I was considering buying my rear speaker now and putting it away until I need it.

Presently have: M40, VP100, QS4.

Options:

1. Another QS4

2. An M3ti

3. Replace VP100 with VP150 and use 100 for rear.

4. Option I haven't thought about but you have.

The back wall is fairly close <6ft. from most of my listening positions.

I'd go with another Q in the back.. That's what they were designed for, to wrap that sound all around ya.. The VP speakers are great, but in my humble opinon not really at their best as rears.. Too easy to identify the speakers location during movies, if you know what I mean ?
Make it a QS8, since it would be running solo.. ? Just a thought, probably not necessary..

Hey Mikey,

I would tend to disagree with you here, you would be surprised at how well a VP can work in the rear, and if placed properly you cannot pick out where it is. I have experimented alot with this trying QS8's and VP's and actually now run 2 VP150's for rears using QS8's for the surronds. No-one listening to my system has been able to identify the speaker location for a given effect during playback. even when playing music in 7 channel mode you cannot pick out an individual speaker unless you put your ear to it. I will grant you that they are not as easy to place hence not as forgiving to location as the QS series.

cheers

John.
Ps I will send in Pics of my setup later this week

I have tried my setup with v150's x 2 in the rears and was very much dissapointed with the effect, they sounded very harsh and 2 dimensional but from what i know Joe from axiom has 2 vp150's in the rear and it works for him, in my case i ended up with qs8's in the rear and now in speaker heaven!!!

hope this helps ,
good luck

Yes you are correct in many discussions with Joe about the rear speakers he told me that he had done the same thing and went with 2 VP150s in back. Like we have all said before there are no hard and fast rules for this. Different setups work better for some situations then others. Experimentation is the name of the game, and you are willing to put forth the effort and experiment and change and try other speaker configurations and different locations in the end you will find what works best for you. the QS8's are great because they are easy to setup and place and will give you great results in almost any position. So you really cannot go wrong in choosing them for your rears.

John, point taken, but not totally conceded.. While limited, I did experiment with just this scenario.. One VP150 and then two QS8's on the rear wall.. (Not counting the M80 mains,QS8's sides,VP150 cntr ) With only approx 5 to 7 feet between the back wall and the rear seats, the VP was just too much speaker.. The twin Q's gave me a much nicer sound.. Like being wrapped up in the sound.. Now two VP150's, while a very sweet set up, would require some room to breath.. Remember, Joe's THEATER is on a scale that dwarfs most of ours, eh.. And the Q's are so much easier to set up.. Just hang'm and forget'm.. Gotta love that..

Hi Mikey, well you may have apoint in the size of the room being a deciding factor. The room my HT setup is in measures 30'x20' and is completely open at the back kind of L shaped onto the pool table room which is another 16x20 area, the front side is open onto another open area which leads to some spare rooms and hall to the bathroom. So for volume realistically I am filling a area of about 1500 square feet with sound. The 2 VP150's that I have in the rear are only about 3 feet behind the back seating area and are mounted on the ceiling angled down and towards the seating area. When setting up my system I found that the QS8's for rears just did not radiate enough sound. Good point on the area, that would certainly make a difference and would be a consideration for somebody.

John
