Has anyone ever tried this on purpose? I had to unhook both my centers this morning and then of course my oldest daughter wants to match a movie 5 minutes later. So without thinking I go into the settings on my Denon 3805 and tell it no center and fire up the movie for my daughter. About 30 minutes later I came back and sat in my sweet spot………….and huh????? It sounds much better then I ever would have thought. I closed my eyes a few times and the dialogue was centered etc. Not so great when I moved around the room but in the sweet spot, very nice. At least now I’m fairly sure I have my speakers toed in right! If push came to shove and if I always got to sit in the sweet spot, I could get by without a center.

Speakers with a good dispersion pattern are supposed to create a nice virtual center image when you are in their sweet spot (in phase, in the center of the two speaker, and with their respective normal vectors intersecting about .5-1.5 feet behind your head.)
Edit: of course this wouldn't apply if you're off center, as you aren't going to be hearing the same volume from each speaker, and the phase relative to you will be off.

Yup. Couldn't stand it when I wasn't in the sweet spot, so I went for a very half ass solution. (use the preouts to the speaker ins on the TV. NOT in use for music listening, thankyouverramuch.
