Hi there,

I'm running M60ti's, Qs8's, vp100, and a ep175 with a denon avr-4802r and i'm having problems with it clipping out.

Sure I'm playing it loud BUT that's why i bought this system!

Any pointers on setup or levels? The technician at Axiom figured maybe it was the source ( ie mp3's off of the net) but I've also been watching dvd concerts and bought cd's and it clipped out!

This last time it wrecked my tweeters in my m60's. Axiom has no problem replacing them but its a pain in the ass.

Max volume is +12dB on 5.1 and +18dB on pure direct.

It clips out at +2 and up after running for a bit. Any Ideas??!

Maybe a bigger amp? (the wife would kill me)

It's so clear it doesn't hurt or even seem that loud . But I do catch myself saying "what?" alot.

Man, that's gotta be really freakin loud.

When you say "clipping out" do you mean that the amplifier is distorting or that it is shutting itself off unceremoniously or both?

What gauge speaker wire are you using? Do you have the straps between the terminals on the back of the speakers secured tightly? How big is the room?

I would also check to make sure that all your speaker wires are attached firmly to the back of the receiver and you don't have any stray strands causing things to short out.

Do you have the right amount of ventalation to the Denon?

Warf, welcome. It's uncertain what you mean by "clipping out"; to me those two words imply different things, similarly to Tom. Clipping is a particular type of distortion, while "out" implies that the receiver shuts itself off. Check and reconnect all speaker wires in case there's a loose strand. Have all speakers set "small" with an 80Hz crossover. The 4802 is a very powerful receiver and the Axioms that you have aren't particularly hard to drive. Note that prolonged listening at over 90dB causes hearing loss. If you use a sound meter,what does it show?

Does the display on the Denon dim on loud peaks? If so you might be clipping for sure. It's really hard to say. The power supplies in these receivers are not too substantial.

I mean it shuts down when I said clipping out.
I'm using 12 awg wire with gold plated banana ends at the receiver. The unit is on the floor right now, as i'm still looking for a unit to put it in.
I have a dvd player on top of the denon (but with 2" spacers and a fan for cooling).

I'm going to give it better ventilation and check all speakers for loose strands. I also changed the setting for the fronts from large to small.

I'll also check the straps on the speaker and the room is 20x16x8

If I brad nailed the speaker wire (behind the baseboard) it wouldn't even work at low volumes..... would it?

Well you can start by taking the DVD player off the top of the receiver, that should allow it to stay a lot cooler than it is at the moment. I wouldn't put anything on top of the receiver, you are just asking for trouble if you do that.

Thanks for all the input! I've checked all connections, set my fronts to small and crossover to 80. Now i'll put my dvd on the floor beside the receiver ( until I get a stand).

As soon as I get my tweeters, I'll let 'er rip again and see what happens...... if it clips out again I guess I'll run an amp on the m60's...... maybe I'll have to get 80's now

I've got the AVR-3805 and in the manual it says if you try to use speakers less than 6 ohms, you risk tripping the automatic protection (current limiter). From what you say, that's what's happening. Too bad. I was hoping to get some 80's, but it doesn't look like 4 ohms agrees with Denons.

I think you misunderstand... he's got M60s (an 8 ohm speaker) and is playing them at rather extremely high volumes. From what Axiom (Alan) says, I think Denons are acceptable for M80s.

Ken your right, and actually I believe Denon's and HK's are two of the brands that Axiom highly recommends for people that have M80's. I selected the m60's, and my 2805 Denon just sings to me with these babies...

I have a Denon 3803 and I can play a total of 7 speakers plus the sub at very high volume for a very long period and have never had a shut down. Bare in mind that I have (4) M80 ti's running in that set of seven speakers. Denon is a fantastic amp for the M80ti's.

warf, the connection integrity at the receiver may be an issue that isn't readily evident. I avoided 12 ga (used 14 ga instead) because of the size of the wire being stuffed into the receiver. I've also read that 12 ga, being relatively inflexible, can put a bit of a strain on the connections themselves.

In any event, I remember reading something (can't remember where) about someone having an issue similar to yours. He tried everything, but still shut down, even after checking the connections at the receiver. A suggestion was made to trim a few srtands off the 12 ga end connected to the receiver. There is no loss of "stuff" getting to the receiver. He tried it and the problem stopped. May be worth while to try it out.

Another thing you might try to isolate the problem is to disconnect one speaker at a time to see if you can localize the issue to a single connection - then you can try and determine if it is the connection, the speaker or the receiver circuit for that one loop.

Warf, if you have carpeting, try setting the reciever on something solid to allow it to breathe from the bottom. Alot of amps and recievers have slots on the bottom to allow for better airflow, although I am not familiar with the Denon.

mace- im not sure about the bottom, but the denon 3805 has two slots in the back for ventilation and top is almost completely vented. which is good cause it certainly puts out some heat, especially in a 5.1/7.1 stereo mode!

Hey I just want to thank everyone for their input. I finally got that the denon off of the floor and into a stand with lots of free air above it. I can play it as loud as I want and it hasn't shut down.

denon recievers are awesome but if I was to do it again I would definitely check out separates (amps, mono, preamp ect) as opposed to 'JUST' looking for the perfect AVR

The clarity of my system especially on dvd concerts is simply outstanding. I am in love with these speakers and when i blew my tweeters, i had new ones in a couple of days.
