I have a pair of M22Ti's,QS8's,VP-150 with a SVS 20-39 PC+ sub.I have a four year old Onkyo TX-DS777 THX-Select receiver.I have the speakers set to small,"configuration" on THX-Yes!.The only other THX setting for this is NO. I have the x-over on the sub as "disabled". Now when I do a speaker calibration using the AVIA disc,on the subwoofer set-up, I am getting bass through my M22ti'2 when it is the subs turn only. How low do the M22Ti's go?....and is everything set where it should be??.Any help appreciated! Thanks, Huck

I would set the M22's to 80hz to see how that sounds.

Millennia M22ti Specifications
Max Amp Power 200 Watts
Min Amp Power 10 Watts
Freq Resp +/-3dB (Hz) 60-22K
Freq Resp +3dB/-9dB (Hz) 50-22K
SPL in Room 1w/1m 93 dB
Anechoic SPL 1w/1m 89 dB
Impedance 8 Ohms
Woofer 5.25" Dual
Tweeter 1"
Dimens. (in.)(HxWxD) 19.7x7.5x8.5
Weight 16 lbs per

Also make sure the sub is enabled. the sub will handle everything below 80hz.

Thanks, but the THX setting is supposed to automatically set the x-over at 80hz. Why are my M22's creating bass when the tone cycles to the sub? I think the sub tone on that Avia disc is around 80hz! The Axioms should play this tone, but not at the same time as the sub? Thanks for the help! Huck

You might want to try turning off THX and setting everything manually. If you have the manual see if there are some pointers.

Is your receiver set this way for Dolby Digital, or is it set this way for a THX dsp? It sounds like you've set it up for THX, but left the Dolby Digital to languish with default settings. Could be wrong here... Also, you should cross the sub in the receiver programming at the same level as the speakers; ie 80 Hz. The sub's crossover should be disabled.

just leave the xover off and run your M22ti full range, they'll be rolling off sharply at around 45~50hz anyway, just adjust the xover on your 20-39PC to around 60 to 80hz and see where you like most. I too have the M22ti and PB1-ISD, been playing around with lots of different settings and at the end the M22ti sounded best without any xover or equalization of any kind, the PB1 virtually disappear in my room and all bass seems to come from the M22ti, try with and without the xover and see what you prefer.

Keith welcome, and this is one I never heard before. I don't use the Avia disc and I can't imagine any problem with it that would send the sub calibration tone through both the sub and the mains. As you indicated, when you set THX yes on your 777 that should automatically set the sub yes, the speakers small and the crossover at 80Hz, which is what you want. Take Avia out of the picture and calibrate with the 777's internal tones; any difference? If not, set THX no and manually set sub yes, all speakers small and crossover 80Hz. Very mysterious.

Thanks JohnK: When you say to cross-over at 80hz..I don't have a choice on this receiver! All it does when you you select THX-"NO", I think it changes the x-over to, I don't know what, as I don't know what the x-over is set at.The default doesn't say anything for this. Also, what should my x-over be set at, obviously I set x-over on sub to "enable".I tried the test tone in the receiver and I doesn't play the sub's tone!(???).I don't get it!!! Anyway, Thanks, Huck

Reading the manual I see what you mean! I can't locate any bass management information. Does the sub function under normal use? I think they utilized "smart scan controller" to help set up the bass management.

There is an abundance of good advice here on using Avia for sub level and crossover setting.

Remember, a crossover point is not a sharp cutoff line. If you play an 80 Hz tone through a properly tuned 80 Hz crossover, each of the two outputs will receive half of the input energy. Even below 80 Hz, some of the energy will go to your mains, but most of it goes to the sub.

Keith, even more mysterious now, since the internal test tones from the receiver should definitely play through the sub if you either set THX yes or set THX no, but then manually set sub yes. The crossover is definitely 80Hz, even though the manual very helpfully says nothing, because a THX certified receiver has to have an 80Hz crossover available. Keep experimenting, but the crossover control on the sub has to be disabled, rather than enabled; your 777 will handle all the crossover duties and the internal one in the sub would just be in the way.
