I am looking at upgrading my speakers and have read good things about Axiom. I currently own a JVC-888VBK that I have had for several years now, and it still works great so I would like to continue to use it for a while. My question is will I have enough power for the E80 system (M80 fronts, VP150 center, QS8 surrounds)? The receiver is rated at 100w/channel and can run 4 or 8 ohms for the front speakers, 8 ohms for center and surround. Is this enough to not damage anything as well as achieve the high sound quality these speakers are capable of?

Thanks,
Derek

Looks like you would be ok, based on the specs...have you considered the M60's also? How big is the room you'll be using?

The room is 15'x8'x45' (although the HT area will be restricted to one end of the room), so it is a fairly large room. I have thought about the M60's and from what I hear they are a great choice also, would I be better off going with those? Also, the VP150 center and QS8 surrounds are rated at 6ohms, but my receiver only is rated at 8 for those channels, should I be concerned about this?

If you are going to be mainly listening at one end of the room 60s would be fine, but you will probably need a big-ass sub for that size room. Subs don't care how close you are sitting

Pretty good sized room, below is a sketch of my future downstairs that I'm in the process of remodeling. The overall room was like 30' x 30' with 9' ceilings. I broke it up a bit with the AV closet. The picture is a bit chopped off, but I'm planning a bar/pool table area diagonal from the HT area. I have a Denon 2805, M60's, VP150, EP350, and 4 Qs8's. In talking to Axiom, they say I should be ok with my Denon and that big of a room. I may look at some Outlaw M200 Monoblock amps to give some of the channels an additional boost at some point.

Maybe someone else will chime in about the JVC driving the Qs8's. I wonder if anybody lives near you, have you checked out the Audition in your Area thread. Maybe you could take your receiver to a persons house with M80s to see if it will work...

The QS8's and VP150 are rated at 6 ohms, although if memory serves, they are actually more around 5.5 ohms.

It's anybody's guess what would happen if you hooked everything up to your JVC. The receiver could clip at higher volumes. It might also run hotter than it should.

One thing to consider is purchasing the Axioms but only hooking up the mains until you can upgrade the receiver. At least that way, you can hear the Axiom sound and decide if you like it or not. Upgrading to a receiver that can easily handle the Epic 80 system won't cost you a fortune. There are several reasonable receivers on the market that will fit your needs for the Epic 80. Just ask around on this forum and I am sure you will get all the advice you need.

I brought my m-60s over to my girlfriends house, we know live together, and we have so much electronic left-overs it's unreal. She has the rx-884, I have not checked the difference between the 884, and your 888. We ran the M-60s playing very loud, without any other speakers, just the mains, and (her) powered CHT-12 velodyne sub. The sub being powered did not draw from the 884. The 884 shut down after over heating twice. Each time after about 5 minutes of "loud" playing, reading if I remember 77 on the volume conrol. It does not display in + or - DB as my Yamaha does, so I don't know what 77 equates too. It seemed to be playing at 80% or so of "cranked" volume, and it did shut-down twice. But again, I don't know the difference (specs) of the 884 compared to your 888. It's unlikely you would listen to that volume level for any lengh of time, but it was not driving additional speakers. The receiver was in an audio cabinet, we had the glass door open, with about a foot over clearence in the back. A stand alone placement may not run as hot, just telling you my experience, but I am sure their are other factors. P.S. we did not argue at all on which speakers to keep, the Bose (4 total)that were in her main room are boxed away.

I used to have this very receiver at one time although I was using it with wharfedale sapphires which were not as efficient as the Axioms. Even though it is rated as 100 watts per channel that rating is probably with only one of the 5 channels being driven. I wouldn't recommend this receiver with the 80s, 4 ohms plus RX-888VBK = Bad medicine.

Check out this Link, the jvc 8000 is the equivalent of the 888 model, in fact I think it's a newer model.

I agree, most receivers are not "Full Bandwidth" rated.

Thanks to all for the replies. After reading, I have decided that I will get a new receiver to run the speakers. However, since I can't afford to buy it all right now, I am considering just getting the VP150 center and QS8 surrounds to replace what I currently have and continue using my current front speakers, sub and receiver until I can get the rest (my existing center and surrounds are the worst part of my current system). So now my question is, will I be okay doing this with the JVC receiver I have, given that it is only rated at 8 ohms for those channels and the speakers at 6 until I upgrade the receiver?
