Hi: I am looking for an older dvd player that has good audio,(#1) and video(#2).I have an older Sony rptv, so the newer video and audio hook-ups not needed! Sony does not recognize progressive scan, but seems, even the "cheapies" do progressive!Sacd or DVD audio,a bonus, but not necessary! Also looking for a single-disc player.I am not ready to upgrade my old Sony,or my older receiver, just yet,so I know I will be looking at some "used" gear. looking for any make and model would helpful! Thanks for looking, Huck

I just upgraded the DVD player and came to realize even though the player was progressive capable it was not being utilized because of the way it was hooked up. So If I were you I wouldn't worry too much about it being progressive. I also sort of look at it like you get what you pay for, even though some may not agree with me.

Progressive scan would be used with a television that is HD Ready or better. In this situation you would use component cables, DVI, or HDMI if your DVD/TV are capable.

In your case, your TV should have Composite or possibly S-Video, in this case you can still use most progressive scan players, just turn the progressive mode off so your in interlaced mode. We just bought a cheapo Apex player from Walmart for $38 bucks and it had progressive, however, we are using it on a bedroom 20" tv, so I just use the regular red/white audio and yello video cable. You should be able to do the same...

I am currently using a Toshiba prog scan dvd player now thru interlaced with s-video, Good picture , but I think the audio could be better on redbook and dvd sound.I was thinking of maybe a Panasonic RP-91 on the low end to maybe a Denon 2900 on the upper-end.What do you think? Thanks, Huck

I'm a bit confused, are you playing your audio through your RPTV's speakers or are you using Axiom speakers? Your not going to get great acoustics out of built in RPTV speakers. I have a toshiba 2750 dvd player that is about 4 years old and the video is fabulous on my Toshiba flatscreen 32". As for sound, it is also very very good playing through my Denon 2805 and Axiom speakers. Also, what receiver are you using. Did you check the menu's within the DVD players setup screens? My toshiba has various settings, Pcm, bitstream, built in 3d spatializer, etc...

Huck,

Unless you are hooked up with analog cables or have established the DVD player as the source for processing your audio, your receiver is doing all of the processing. I believe the audio for DVD players really centers around the analog path. Hopefully someone will correct me if I am wrong. I've always viewed DVD players as equipment that provides PQ and also plays CDs if I need the help. But that's just me.

Hey, I notice you are in Niagra Falls. I'm not far away - Rochester.
