Last year I bought the Denon 910 and back in November decided that the picture did not look as good as I thought it would so I decided to upgrade. Well, my here is what I ended up doing:

1. I purchased a 2900 from Crutchfield and a 2910 from Ovations(specialty retailer in Cincinnati, Ohio) and hooked both up to my Hitachi 57T500(CRT,RPTV). This was done the week of Thanksgiving.

2. First I hooked both up via Component and did some A/B comparisons with the two. Then, I hooked up the 2910 via DVI and compared that to the 2900 hooked up via Component.

3. I ended up keeping the 2910 and sending the 2900 back to Crutchfield. I planned on having my TV ISF calibrated and thought after that was done, I would be WOW'd by the player. I also convinced myself that the 2910 "HAD" to be better because it had the newer technology. "RAY" over on another forum introduced me to the 2900 and its pros over the 2910.

4. Then, I had my TV ISF calibrated back on December 22nd and after that was done, the picture looked somewhat better and the audio was a little bit better. But, I did not get "WOW'D" like I had expected to be. Needless to say, I was a little bit disappointed.

5.On December 30th, I went to visit my brother and his family down in Chattanooga. My brother got a new 70" SONY LCD TV for x-mas/birthday and had a 3 year old Toshiba DVD player. Immediately, I told him he should look into getting a new DVD player. So, off to Tweeter's we went. Well, the salesperson ended up talking him into the DENON 3910. Well, we got it home and hooked it up and the picture was absolutely amazing. This made me realize that a upconverting DVD player was not necessary for the TV I had. When we were in there, I overhead another salesperson talking to a customer about the 2900 and he was excited about it. It reminded me of me when I was in audio sales and had a customer interested in something I knew was a great piece to own, but I couldn't afford. Anyways, within a hour after hooking up my brother's TV we were back at Tweeters.

6. The store only had one more player left and it was the floor model, but since my brother had purchased so much from them in the last month, I got the open box for 399.99 plus Chattanooga sales tax, which is like 9% down there.

7. Last night I had the guy who calibrated my TV come back down and tweak a few things and I now I am VERY HAPPY and WOW'D by the picture quality I now have. I also added some Outlaw amps and I think I have finally found a cure for upgradeitis.... for now.

8. Now I have a 2910, that I need to sell.. so if you are interested, check out my ad on Videogon. If you have a similar TV like mine, then I wouldn't recommend it. I would go for a 2900 or 2200. They had a 2200 as well, but the build of the 2900 is very impressive. It reminds me alot of my first DVD player I bought back in 1997.. The Sony DVPS7000(I still have this player hooked up in my office.)

Sorry this is so long. I just wanted to share my rollercoaster ride I have been on for the last month trying to find the perfect DVD player.

I faced the 2900/2910 dilemma also. However, I did not have the luxury of doing a direct A/B comparison -- most of the local retailers in my area were out of stock (or very low) on the 2910s.

Reading Ray's recommendation, and the numerous glowing reviews on avsforum, I took the plunge, and got me a 2900.

The build quality is TERRIFIC. I didn't get the $399 price , but found it new at listenup.com for $599 (believe they are a licensed Denon retailer). That's a $1k player for 40% off! (60% in your case )

I had just ordered mine from the same place when I caught a glimpse of one of Ray's posts. Great player, we just happened to have "one" sacd in our posession so we could see if it (sacd) is all hype. At least here at our house sacd is not all hype and I could never tell w/o this player. My favorite thing is much more color and detail being seen in any movie. Now I'm anxious to see Drumline again.....that movie has lots of color with all those band members dressed up and Under the Tuscan sun with the scenery shots in Tuscany.

Interesting that you should comment on Drumline ... I was at a Circuit City location a month back. They had Drumline playing on plasma/rear projection (don't remember) set ... the picture looked amazing! The clash of the cymbals, the bass from the drums, and the quality of the picture itself, made it very arresting!

It's nice to see you guys ended up being happy with the 2900. One of the things I always worry about is giving a piece of input, having somebody act on it and spend money - then the posibility of being gravely disappointed or maybe I was 180 degrees wrong. Whew! (Of course, in THAT case, I would blame it all on Jack )

Now, based on the killer deals and the money you saved, when will you guys be getting the MX-700 remote? LOL!!!!.

What is the MX-700? I had a SONY Remote that I just could not program, so I took it back. How much does that remote cost?

Jeff, I'm gonna restrain myself here. . Take a look at this thread and follow some of the links. It's a pretty complete information set and will provide you with a wealth of information.

A quick summary is that it is a $349 remote that can be gotten as an "open box" for a bit more than 1/2 price. Unbeleivably powerful and user friendly with programmaning on you PC. If you are looking for a univeraal remote AND you'd like the wife/family to be really happy with ease of use, this puppy needs to be in the top 2 of you list .

Take a look at the thread and see what you think. Several folks on the forum, as you will see, have gotten one and they seem pretty pleased. If you've got any money left following your recent HT binge , this remote might be worthy of consideration.

Jeff, I'm another who was browbeaten by Ray and forced to get an MX-700. I am SOOOOOOOOOOO glad I did. I love this thing. The point I want to make is that, at first glance, the MX Editor can appear to be very difficult. I know I found it a bit daunting initially. Truth is, for some (like me) it can be a little tricky to learn. BUT! Once learned, using the MC Editor is not only easy, it's a JOY to program and use. Don't be put off by initial impressions. Once programmed, the MX-700 is the most user friendly remote I've ever used (it's my 4th universal remote). The buttons are so well laid out that, for basic functions, I almost never find it necessary to turn on the remote's light to see what I'm doing. It's a REALLY good remote, and well worth the time and effort it takes to learn how to program it.

I haven't even done most of my programming (tomorrow!) and I love mine already!
