Axiom Home Page Forums General Discussion Home Theater Static question- Onkyo TX-600, M-22 setup

My father told me today that he's experiencing some static in his setup. He's running 4 M-22's for the front and rear speakers, along with 2 VP-100's for center and rear center speakers. This is all connected to an Onkyo TX-600. I'd say his system is about two to three years old. He thought it could be the speakers, themselves, but I'd really think that it's the receiver.

Can anyone chime in here if they've experienced static from a relatively new Onkyo receiver such as his? Anyone have any suggestions on what to do about it?

I'm sure many (more qualified) folks will offer trouble shooting steps for the static, but I have a 601 with M22s, vp150, and QS8s and never have a problem with static.
Does he always here it? Only certain imputs?

i have had no problems what-so-ever from my onkyo 701. my first question would be what was his source material when he heard the static? TV, radio, cd, dvd, etc? try and isolate the problem that way to determine if its an 'across the board' problem, or if it is specific to a certein input. also, try and verify if the static is coming from ALL speakers, or just one, or a few. i think that would be the first stage in trying to isolate what might be causing it.

and if all else fails.. just as a general idea, i would pull the unit out and check that all connections are solid and clean in the back. even use some of that 'can-air' to knock the dirt and dust-bunnies from all the cords and connections. it never hurts. let us know if you can get it isolated, and hopefully we can figure it out.

Could it be a dirty volume pot?

I'll second the dirty volume pot (or other potentiometers in the signal path)... even if they make noise other than when they're swept.

Is your dad a smoker? We smokers find such insidious ways of getting crap deep inside electronics - I don't smoke in the house anymore.

The pots can be cleaned any number of ways - most here like the Caig products (I've never used them).

Oh god... 2nd and 3rd dirtiest machines I've ever worked on were owned by smokers...

You should see some of the stuff we had shelved as hand-me-downs at the old arena that came from CBC during the days when you could still smoke in a tiny, cluttered studio. Must have taken 5 years of two guys burning away Camels in ashtrays to make them look like that...

Tuner cleaner goes in... coffee coloured solvent comes out.

Is the static heard in all the speakers?
If he has any of the little power converter cubes (like for an ipod or a phone or an answering machine) plugged into the same circuit as his onkyo, they can cause static, but in my case in only one speaker.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I've been told that the static is coming from the main two speakers only. He's checking further on the other inputs, but it looks like he's only getting it from whichever video input he's running the cable/TV from. I'll still try to find out more info about it from him.
