I don't know if there are any other Dave Alvin fans out there, but Mobile Fidelity (yes, they are back) has released Blackjack David on SACD. It is not Multi-Channel, just beautiful stereo.
Sounds very, very nice.

Definitely a fan -- I finally got to meet Dave this summer and have my copy of Museum of Heart signed. Ashgrove hadn't been released yet but he played a lot of songs off the album. Amazing show.

Thread hijack -- does anyone know anything about yourmusic.com? Seems like an awfully good deal, but I want to know what the catch is.

On further investigation, yourmusic.com seems to be the old BMG club.

Easy there Big Guy! No trash talking about Dave!
Have you ever heard Fourth of July by X? He wrote it.
And when Billy Zoom got tossed from X because of the H it was Dave that came to the rescue and filled in for a couple of years. He was also with them on the Knitters album.
And if you want to go back even further, The Blasters were Dave and his brother Phil, and a couple of other great players. They were quickly lost in the fog of the late 70's and early 80's, and then broke up because Dave and Phil kept getting into fights on stage. but now everyone is looking back and crediting them with starting the "Roots Rock" movement, although they will tell you that they were just playing good ole Rock & Roll.
The Blasters got back together for a couple of short tours a couple of years ago, and put out a couple of live albums and a DVD. Incredible stuff. I rode all the way to Boston to catch one of the shows, and they blew the roof off of the place.
And a couple of years back Dave was the lead guitar on one of Dylan's tours.
I've gotten the chance to meet him a few times, and a few years back ended up watching the first game of the Yankees/Mets World Series with him and the band back in the green room at the Rams Head (?) Tavern up in Annapolis.
Great Guy, Incredible Player, and an Amazing Songwriter.
Check his stuff out, he is a National Treasure.

For anyone with more than a passing curiosity in Dave Alvin or The Blasters, this has been on my short list of desert island albums for many years now.

And if you have a couple more bucks to blow
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:o3jiear54xk7
will put it all together for you, and add in a bunch of the live stuff from the early days.

And BTW dmn, how do you do that thing with just the "this" in blue as a link, without posting the whole link? That is a neat trick that I have never learned.

Have you gone out and gotten/listened to the M/F disc that I started this with yet? Another thread got started on the merits of just plain Stero SACD, and more than not seem to be shouting down my opinion that it makes a difference, but I have played the hell out of my old copy of Blackjack, and this one, to me, sounds just incredible. It is already on for the third time tonight.
Well worth the coin.
But then again, I'm such a freak for Dave's stuff that I would buy a remastered SACD of Dave sittin around smokin Marlboroughs if I thought it would put a couple of bucks in his pocket and keep him on the road and in the studio.

Okay, fine. Ken's everyone's friend. I stray from the computer for just one night and Ken's got all the answers. That's okay. I don't need any of this. I don't need this stuff, and I don't need you. I don't need anything except this. And that's it and that's the only thing I need, is this. I don't need this or this. Just this ashtray. And this paddle game, the ashtray and the paddle game and that's all I need. And this remote control. The ashtray, the paddle game, and the remote control, and that's all I need. And these matches. The ashtray, and these matches, and the remote control and the paddle ball. And this lamp. The ashtray, this paddle game and the remote control and the lamp and that's all I need. And that's all I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one - I need this. The paddle game, and the chair, and the remote control, and the matches, for sure. And this. And that's all I need. The ashtray, the remote control, the paddle game, this magazine and the chair...

Scary thought, that. I think it would be more amusing as stand up. But I've always had an overinflated ego.

You were how this all started! You asked me specifically how to make the snazzy links, and Ken jumped right in with an explanation. If I actually cared, hurt and indignation would be appropriate, hence the Raymond Navis/Jerk monologue.

I just thought it was a complete Hoot, and could not believe how long it took me to catch onto the Jerk reference.
Doh!
Have you heard that Mobile Fidelity Blackjack yet?
Just based on that one I've already ordered "This Time" by Los Lobos on the Mobile Fidelity lable.

Got my first "yourmusic.com/BMG" order in the mail today. No hidden charges, impeccably packaged, no hidden charges and no complaints. Not much of a selection, but if there's something in their catalog you like, it seems tough to beat the price and convenience.

i dont know if they still do it like they used to, but they will send you some crappy 'disc of the month' unless you verify with them that you dont want it. and if you dont cancel it before they send it, they charge full price, and you have to pay to send it back if you dont want it. i always hated that part, cause i sure never remembered to send in the form to let them know not to send it.

i have a cd of Extreme's Greatest Hits, cause i forgot to cancel it. and how in the hell did extreme ever become the 'disc of the month'? and did they even have enough hits to make a greatest hits album?

that stupid 'more than words' song... it never helped to get me laid..

I bought Pornograffiti the day it came out... the first album was some pretty catchy borderline glam rock "Mama... don't waaaanna go to schoooool today"... the second album came with a sneeze guard it was so schmaltzy.

I finally gave it to my brother to give to his guitarist. Guitarists like that Nono Butterball a**hole.

Bren,
And remember the dark day's of Van Halen with Gary Cherone as their lead singer on Van Halen III? I still have that piece of crap in my cd collection. I play it occasionally for one song "Fire in the Hole". The rest is garbage. Porongraffiti wasn't a bad cd.

John Corabi

i actually saw him in 1998/99 when he and bruce kulick(formally KISS guitarist) got together and formed a little band project called UNION. they played at a little club up in abilene, and one of my buddies was/is a HUGE kiss fan, so he wanted to see if bruce would sign some of his stuff. i thought the show was OK at best, and corabi did not impress me. but bruce kulick is an extremely tight and technical guitarist, i was very surprised. and as if that wasnt enough, he was a really cool guy. he talked with everyone that wanted to talk with him, and he signed every piece of memorabilia that my buddy brought. and he has this super thick new jersey accent that just had me crackin up. definitely sounded out of place amongst all us texans.

BigJohn & Mike,
Speaking of John Corabi with Motley Crue, that cd has to be one of the heaviest/darkest albums in the Crue history. Ironically, it is one of my favorite Crue cd's (when I am in the mood). Mick Marrs guitar playing is far better with Corabi playing rhythm guitar on this cd. Tommy Lee's drumming is outstanding. Anyhow, what I was initially going to say was, back when Corabi first joined the Crue, my girlfiend and I saw them in a small bar in Vancouver. We had just finished seeing a Robert Plant concert and headed to the bar for a few cocktails. Long story short, Robert Plant is sitting across the table from us, his band starts playing with the house band and before you know it John Corabi is up singing etc. I think the Crue were in the early stages of recording the cd? The rest is a blur but I do know that this went on till about 2:00 am with the Crue and Robert Plant/Band! One of those magical moments in life.....

I will agree with you that the "Corabi Album" is a good, if not the best Crue album. If you try to associate it with the previous works, you don't do it justice.

I did like pieces of the other works, but none of them completely.

Cool story! I bounced at a local bar, and because it was close to a major arena, we got a lot of athletes and entertainers. I could relay some interesting scenes about some well known people!!!
