i remember someone posting something about a pad that is used to eliminate speaker vibrations from hitting the floor as much.

does anyone remember where i can buy these?

yea, they're used for subs but i want to put something under my m80's to reduce the amount of vibrations going into the floor. i live in an apartment.

i thought i remembered seeing something that was essentially a carpet that sucked in a lot of the vibrations. anyone know what i'm talking about?

I don't know about commercially available pads, but you can always improvise. Some old (or new) tennis balls will work, or some rubber balls sold to kids. Not the greatest look, I admit. You are trying to decouple the physical (mechanical) vibration of deep bass transmitted from the enclosure to the floor, so a sandwich of dissimilar materials will work (sand, foam, etc.).

The problem that remains is the acoustical energy of the deep bass radiated from the woofers and the ports through the air. Acoustic energy is picked up by the sheetrock or plaster in the walls and ceiling as well as the floor, and transmitted through the sub-structure of the room and the building. There isn't much you can do about that short of turning down the volume or building a room within a room, one totally isolated from the other, which gets very expensive.

Having lived in apartment buildings of various ages and a semi-detached house, I've usually experimented to find out just how loud I can run the sound levels and subwoofer without incurring the wrath of neighbors. I avoid really loud late-night listening and turn down the sub somewhat if I think the dynamics of the music or soundtrack exceed levels I think are acceptable.

I'm sorry; I should have been more specific in my question.

I do think (??!!??) Ravi's intentions are to isolate strong bass energy from neighbors, but what I was curious about was whether or not there are reasons to do this pertaining to the sound quality.

I've never been a believer in isolation products when it comes to amps, disc players, etc. But I wonder if with speakers (and in particular subs), if there is an arguement for "coupling" them to the floor... or one for "floating and decoupling" the speaker from the floor?

Mark, I just wanted to know if I put something under my M80's would it reduce the noise the neighbrs heard whilst not affecting the sound in my room.

I'll probably just leave them like that, or maybe get those little $1 black rugs and put one under each to see if that helps. worth the $2 trial
