One piece of advice.

DO NOT RENT OR BUY THIS!

I had heard of the "awfulness" (is that a word?) of Lion's Gate Films but had not actually witnessed one. Now I have. Point taken.

My sister and brother-in-law rented this over the weekend...that is definitely close to two hours I want back! Tried to be open minded about it...but can't go there.

This movie looked like it was shot on home video, with a flawed plot, horrible acting and an ending that was just utterly ludicrous.

Unless you want to suffer through a movie with so many plot issues just for the masochistic pleasure of it, stay far, far away from this movie.

That the one where the couple were diving on the Great Barrier Reef and the boat full of divers left them out there? If so, my wife left less than halfway through.

Unfortunately it is a true story and I heard as result the Australian gov. passed a law with fairly strick requirements by dive guiding companies on how to keep track of their clients and not leave them out on the high seas.

What bugs me about the "shot on video" look is that it leaves you wondering "Why doens't the cameraman just help them out?"

There are other movies that use the effect well, but then actual characters are (allgedly) doing the filming.

Open Waters is not that bad, maybe the fact that the movie budget was 150,000 dollars, and acted by totally amateurs and semi-professional actors would had help you assimilate the movie more easily.
I agree with you, the acting was mediocre and most scenes at the hotel were very cheesse. What I like about the movie though is the way they tell the story; they did not resort to any sensationalistic or unrealistic plot. The sharks behave like, er, sharks, a novel concept for Hollywood . They tried to present the events as close as possible to real life. Yeah, I know, it's a slow movie, yet in real life that would have been a very slow death too. 8-O ...oh, and the end, what would you've done in her situation?

I guess you can appreciate movies more than I can. I thought the movie sucked. Definitely in the top five worst movies I've ever seen. And based off of your logic, I should like 'The Blair Witch Project' too. It only had like a $50,000 budget. I'm not trying to be sarcastic or anything, but you get my point. Open Water was definitely a waste of $2.

I know exactly what you mean... I didn't say on my post that I thought it was a great movie. I've seen way better movies done with half that budget, 'The Return' comes to mind, it's Russian. What I tried to say was that that movie was done by a 'weekend warrior' regular Joe, he didn't even left his day job while filming. Given those circumstances the movie was pretty darn good.

BTW: Blair Witch Project is one of the very few movies I had walk-out from the theather and I have a lot of patience for movies; I didn’t even make it half way - hate it ... see, now I'm dizzy

Good choice in my books. Clerks is the first decent low budget movie that came to my mind. I think it was the first film my wife to be and I saw together.

my wife is a HUGE kevin smith fan.. we have just about everything he has ever made.. including signed copies of 'clerks', 'chasing amy', and 'dogma'.

although, i would have to say i was very disappointed with 'jersey girl'. definitely his weakest work thus far, in my opinion..

The movie theatre on campus gets movies about 2 months after their release and plays them for $2. I wouldn't pay a dollar more, the sound system is terrible in the old theatre. No surround sound.

Blair Witch would probbably be at the top of the list as well. I'd have to think long and hard about movies that are worthy of my top 5 'most awesomely bad movies.'

yes, worse than 'mallrats'. i actually think 'mallrats' had enough one-liners and unique characters in unique situations, that it saved itself from being a complete waste of time. now granted, story line was weak, and the whole final gameshow scene is just too stupid beyond comment.. but, i laughed enough times in the middle to make it remotely likeable.

BTW- have you got to see 'fandango' yet?

We endured "Ocean's 12" the other night. Very disappointing.

I think we've had "bad movie" threads before, but the problem is, what some people despised, other people adored.

Brother, ain't that about the truth. We rented it the other night also and didn't take us very long before we knew we had a complete fuddle dud on our hands! I was very disappointed.

i totally agree on the 'oceans 12'.. maybe i was expecting to much cause the 'oceans 11' was soo good. or maybe we just expected too much cause there were soo many really good actors in the film. but, the bottomline came down to a script that was soo polluted and non-believeable, that the actors just seemed to be going thru their lines, just so they could get it over with. once you realized the punchline(which i did about an hour in), then you realize the entire movie itself is shadows and smoke screens.

very bad.... very, very bad...

Ditto!!

After been so disappointed by Ocean's12 I was afraid to rent Meet the Fockers but it was quite good, though not as good as the first one.

Yeah! Very disappointed in Ocean's 12. Lousy plot, bad script, and if the director used any more of the hand held camera spinning shots, I'd a blown lunch.

I was disappointed in Meet the Fockers (just my opinion). Though I was fully aware of what I was gonna get, I'm a little tired of gross out humor. However, watching those superb actors have such a good time with each other was well worth the cost of the rental. Not a good movie, but fine performances. I'd love to see Dustin Hoffman and Robert De Niro together in a really good movie, be it comedy, drama, action, or suspense.

If that's the case, I sure hope she's seen this.

It's even more entertaining than any of his actual films. Seriously.

You're welcome, Peter. Now, in exchange, can you give me some of that time I'll never get back? I'm telling you, whoever took credit for "writing" that turd had a lot of balls. I can tolerate implausible; it's the "boring" that disgusted me. To make a movie with both George Clooney and Brad Pitt and have my wife be thoroughly disinterested is quite a feat.

Yeah Oceans 12 was a big stinker. It has been a long time since I fell asleep during a movie............but I nodded at least 3 times during that one. At one point when I was actually awake, I was fast forwarding through parts.

Next night I watched Spanglish which I hate to admit, I didn't mind it at all. Wasn't great but it wasn't bad either.

This is some kind of record. We agree again. I was pleasantly surprised by Spanglish. Of course, I wasn't expecting much, so I got more than I expected. I'm not an Adam Sandler fan, but he made me like his character. It was worth the price of the rental.

thanks for the link though.. would have been a great find if i wasnt aware of it. its always nice to surprise her!!

I agree, Spanglish was a nice surprise; I love Cloris Leachman character (Tea Leoni’s mother), witty and insightful...
Has anyone seen 'Birth' w/ Nicole Kidman? Dunno what to make of the movie, ... beautiful music, very well done and acted, but man , <gasp> the story SUCKS!

Yeap, that’s the one. Was that movie shown on theaters in the US? I would think probably not. I had never heard of that movie before, so I was kind of surprised when I saw a new Nicole Kidman movie I’ve never heard before on blockbuster’s new releases.
I was really into the movie until that part, it’s just wrong. But like I said, it’s very well made , and the music IS amazing.

It’s likely that the version I saw was heavily edited so that blockbuster would put on the shelf. But still, the mere suggestion of the scene would make you sick.

I almost want to rent Oceans 12 because Ive heard it was that bad. I liked Oceans 11 so much, I figured I should at least check out its sequel - or just turn my brain off and watch it, expecting to get nothing out of it.

Absolutely! Like speakers, you should make up your own mind about any movie.
