Was told by a friend today that I could hang the mounting bracket for a 37" flat panel TV with the 90# EZ Anchors on 1/2" drywall. The wall is an exterior CBS with the drywall being held with firring strips. The TV is 112#, wondering if anybody has hung one in this manner?

I have no relevent experience in this area but I would NOT mount a 112 pound TV on the wall with anything less than a bunch of long screws into good wood, or a couple of artistically arranged supports going down to the floor

Do NOT use drywall anchors. It will NOT hold. I just put up my 42" and I believe my contractor used lag bolts. Ask advice from a strong DIY person, but I'm sure they'll tell you the same thing. The last thing you want is that thing coming off the wall.

John, that's exactly what I was thinking as well. With 1/2" drywall screwed into 1/2" thick firring strips, that leaves a 1" gap between where the mounting brackets need to get hung and the concrete block...where I'd like to lag the mounts into. Normally I would have not paid much attention to such advice but the person is extremely knowledgable in building construction and upon questioning him a time or two he swore it would work just fine.
After reading through the instruction manual with the bracket it doesn't get into anything other than mounting the bracket onto at least one stud behind the drywall, which in my case there is no studs.
In theory, if I did use 6 of the EZ Anchors that have the holding capacity of 90# ea on drywall....I'm asking myself why wouldn't it work? I know, it *just* don't seem right, though!

This was my original thought! What would I need to do, use long lag bolts such as tapcons into the concrete block? This was going to be my original method.

If you only have drywall and strapping I would want to see at least a couple of bolts going right into the concrete. I think your friend is absolutely correct that the fasteners will handle 90 pounds each as long as the pull is straight down.

Now... mount one of those puppies in the middle of the drywall between two furring strips (the drywall is glued to the furring, right ?) and pull straight out. Bet it won't take 90 pounds to rip through the drywall....

I guess if the TV were mounted REALLY close to the drywall so that there was essentially no outward force it could work with just fasteners but I sure wouldn't do it myself.

I'm normally a big advocate of E-Z Anchors - I think they are miraculous and I've used them dozens of times for all kinds of things without any failure. I have my QS8's on them and am not nervous at all.

However, a 112#, expensive plasma TV is another story. I'd want some wood back there, even if it meant re-rocking the wall. I think John's observation about pull-out force vs. shear force is applicable.

"Installation" is my least favorite part.

Ideally, you'd want to mount to some studs. If there are some nearby, you can mount horizontal studs (2x4's or similar) to create a more suitable mounting area. OR, mount to the concrete if you can.
