Sad day in the Lombardi household and a question.

There was a power outage that happened while I was watching my plasma with the 1050 doing powering my M60's. When the power went out I thought, "big deal" and when I powered up the 1050 again everything was fine. Well....about 2 days later my Mother-in-law was watching a DVD and the 1050 clicks off. Strange I think so I turn it back on and it turns itself back off. I then turn the volume very low and turn it back on and it powers up. I turn the volume up and it works fine. What I have found is that if the volume is higher then say 1/2 then it shuts off. What is wrong here and is the unit worth fixing or is it scap?

Craig, I really don't know what I would do in this situation. Your mother in law doesn't have it in for you does she?

Your best bet would be to visit the outlaw saloon and read old threads about your 1050 and see if others have had a similar problem. Or contact outlaw techs directly and see if there is a solution they can diagnose via email.

set up a smaller HT in your bedroom with the 1050- why?

I was wondering if you had a surge protector in line with your receiver/ TV. If not, it might not be a bad idea to do that.

There are various uninterruptable power supplies (UPS) that have surge protection and also provide power for a limited period of time used for computers. If you live in a lightning prone or surge prone area, you might want to consider one of these. I wouldn't worry about the overall power rating too much because I suspect that all you need is enough time to power down your equipment.

Power line surges/ spikes can do strange things to your expensive equipment, even if you have the power switch turned off. I think that it is much better to be safe than sorry. It only costs a little more to be safe.

Power outages usually entail a frequency dip prior to the lights going out. This is harder on electronic equipment than the outage itself. You may have a half baked piece of electronics.

Sounds like a need for a line conditioner/voltage regulator?

i had the chance to check out the new outlaw h/t processor at the home entertainment show in new york last weekend,it was the first time i saw a peice of their equiptment,the preamp looks like a lot of processor for the money,i think its 1100 bucks.....ok sorry to interrupt....back to the power discussion

I just recently did a bit of research on surge protecttion. There is a thread over at AVS that discusses MOV-based protectors (like Monster & virtually everybody else) and their inherent shortcomings, not to mention the fact that Monster (nor the others) will ever pay off in the event of a failure (they'll argue that your wiring is faulty, etc.). I finally ended up purchasing this baby...

I can't say that I have noticed any improvement in the sound or picture in my setup, but more importantly, I also haven't noticed any degradation in signal quality. The technology is sound and I feel much better down here in daily t-storm country (Georgia) with the peace of mind that this thing provides. Other maunufacturers of units utilizing the same tecnology (series mode protection) are Brick Wall and SurgeX.

A good UPS (bat backup) will do the same thing, but give you a controlled, and timed power off when the bat runs to a low voltage set point. No time to search right now, but look for one that converts AC to DC, then back to AC. The conversion transformer will give you clean, uninteruped 60 cycle power.

I guess I should mention that I used to be a power plant control room / switch board operator. All plants convert and clean power they produce for electronic controls within the plant. That's a small tidbit for a bit of perspective.

An AC regenerator (AC->DC->AC) will run you in the neighborhood of $600 on upward, if I'm not mistaken.

After a quick Google search, this company makes what looks to be, some pretty nice stuff. I’d lean toward the pro-audio lines, over consumer.

I have no idea what they cost, but suspect they aren’t cheap, but neither are new amps, DVD players and other electronic devises in a HT. This will at least give you an idea of what I’m talking about. They have numerous options. I did not see a combination conditioner / UPS. Looks like you’d have to buy both if you want the battery back up.

I've got Furman PL-8 and PM-8s (one has lights, one doesn't)... they're both around $200CDN or so, and a much better investment than a $125 Monster glorified power bar.

They're in road racks - you never know what you'll get for power on site. Easier to condition your power than to install hum buckers all over the place.

For home video, it might be overkill, you're not running triax or multistrand through cable trays chock full of other signal and AC bearing wiring, but isn't that part of HT culture? Going way too far?

Not to knock Furman, as I am unaware of the quality of their products, but they were sued by one of series-mode companies who holds the patent on series-mode protection, regarding Furman's claim to using series-mode. The patent-holder (Surge-X, I believe) had not licensed it to Furman and claimed in their lawsuit that Furman was providing MOV-based protectors while claiming series-mode.

A settlement was reached in the case but I don't recall the details.
