Hi everyone,

New to the board. I was wondering if I could get suggestions from you all on what speakers would be appropriate for my den. I am having trouble between picking the m22, m40, m50, m60 for fronts, the qs4 or qs8 for surrounds, and the 100 or 150 for center. The room I am putting these speakers in is 19 x 14, and is the main living area of the house. The speakers will be used often, and will be pumped through a Denon 2105 A/V receiver. I am trying to watch my budget, but I do want the best sound possible. Any advice is welcomed. Thanks!

I'll take my turn in asking the usual questions...

What is your ratio for movies vs. music listening? For music (if applicable) will it me 2 channel stereo or multi-channel 5.1? (Makes a difference, possibly, with rear speaker choices.)

Are there any size limitations for your speakers, either physically or with your other household members (some people need to check their WAF (Wife Approval Factor) and so forth. If they don't like the way they look, you will spend more time trying to hide them, and thus the sound will be worse than if they were out in the open.)

What type and size TV fo you have or plan to use? Even though I like my M60s, if I had a 27" TV, it would look funny having those sized speakers.

Um, what else.....
You mention room size, but what about any hallways or open areas directly connected to this room? It can impact the size of speakers you need to drive that total air volume. How tall are your ceilings?

These all elad to air volume. For me, I ended up with M60 fronts and a beefy sub because I am set up in my basement that is pretty much one large room, a bathroom and a storage room. I needed to account (according to Alan from Axiom, and I trust his judgement) for the total air volume even though I am physically set up inside only 1/4 of that volume of air. If I made and enclosed room, I woulnd't have needed to push so much air, but I still think that the M60s (for me) were a better choice than my original plan of M22s because I like mid and low range, and you would be surprised how much bass the M60s can kick out (with the sub turned off)...

make sure and budget a sub to go in there also..

with 8ft cielings, thats a total of under 2200sqft, so the M22's with a good sub will do well. with budget being an isue, i think you would do fine with the QS4's and the VP100. the QS8's and 150 would be better, but that is a questionable term to use when dealing with HT equip. my idea of better, may be different from someone elses..

so, M22's would be fine in that space, as long as paired up with a good sub.. look into te SVS PB-10, or the HSU STF-2. both are excellent for the price. good luck, and let us know what you end up going with..

also, if you are looking to save some money.. order the factory outlet speakers from axiom. they are 10% off regular price, and are every bit as good, excpet maybe for a small scratch that you will probably never find. plus you can get an additional 5% off if you buy 5 or more pieces in one order. if you get factory outlet, plus buy 5 pieces of equip( 2 M22's, 2 QS4's, and the VP100), you will get a total of 15% off regular price.. that can save a nice litle chunk to meet your budget.

Welcome lawsab!

Nick and bigJohn have pretty much covered everthing I would ask. I also second the Factory Outlet option. You get 10% off instantly, plus if you order 5 or more items you get another 5%. These speakers are brand new, and are every bit technically the same as new stock. Axiom has very high quality control standards during manufacturing, so even if a speaker has a microscopic blemish, it takes the Factory Outlet route.

Your Denon will do a fine job, with any choice you make

No real dissent from me regarding what has already been said.

My own path, which I found VERY satisfying, was to buy the M60's and then acquire a good sub later when budget permitted it. However, if you watch a LOT of movies, you may be well advised to not wait with the sub.

I am a big fan of the saying that "you're never sorry when you buy the 'good' one". While I'm sure M22's are fine speakers, I would have personally always had a bad case of the "what ifs". Likewise, I just don't favor the look or tippability of speakers-on-stands compared to floorstanders.

John, I think you mean cubic feet and not sq.ft. No big deal, we know what you ment, just did not want the poster to be confused. 8ft ceilings = sg. ft x 8 for cu.ft. I kinda concur with tom, if these speakers are going to be used often, The 60s will give you the big sound, while still efficient for a receiver to drive them. The 22s are a great little speaker. I would not part with mine. But you would not have to upgrade. There is a substanial more open airy and more powerful sound from the 60s. Again, the 22s are great, but the driver and cabinet size cannot be ignored, there is a difference in sound, but there is also a difference in price. Can't really go wrong either way.

Lawsab,

I was going through the exact situation about 2 months ago on deciding which speakers to get. At first I was set on getting the M22's since they were cheaper than the floorstanders. After speaking to some Axiom members, I found that while the M22s are excellent speakers, they cant really be compared with floorstanders. I thought what the hell (and since I always suffer from could of, would of, should of) decided to get the M60s.

Like others have said, it all depends on your budget and how much you want to spend. If you have the ends then go for the highest you can afford. One thing I really like about Axiom is that it costs very little to jump to their higher-end products.

I think (and its just MY lay opinion) the jump from the VP100->VP150 and QS4->QS8 are mostly for the larger sized rooms. They *might* sound similar in smaller to mid sized rooms but again I'm no expert. The jump from QS4 to 8s is only $100 so I figured what the hell, get the best one. Same mentality for the center, difference is $145 so I went ahead and got the VP150. Also, factor in the additional cost for the M22 stands and you're close to the price range of floorstanders.

You really can't go wrong with any selection you decide, but I'd say invest in the best your budget allows.

Thanks everyone for your help. I think I am going to go ahead with the 60s, qs8, 150, because I know Ill suffer from the "what ifs." Thanks again everyone.

You're gonna love the M60, VP150, QS8 combo. I know I do. Great choice!
