Alan mentioned in an older post that the M40 and M50 were laid back compared to the M22 and the M60. What does laid back really mean? Is it just the opposite of forward or something else?

Having recently listened to M50s and M60s each for quite a while, my perception was that the M50s were less aggressive in the upper mids. In other words, a _slight_ dip in the frequency response around 2k-4k. The M60s were more forward and bright, and more even sounding to me.

Hi ajb,

There isn't as much midrange and treble detail on the M40 or M3ti as there is with the M22ti, M2i and M60ti.

The M50ti falls about halfway between the "laid-back" tonal balance of the M40 and the more detailed spectral balance (also sometimes called more "linear" or "flatter") of the M60ti.

Since Alan is too modest and "laid back" to advertise this , I would do instead...

Describing Loudspeaker Sound by Alan Lofft

Oops!!! I just realized that "laid back" is not included in this article. Hmm... Alan, Why don't we take this opportunity to have your official definition of the term "laid back"...?

Hi sushi,

"Laid-back" is a more polite way of describing a midrange depression ("recessed," "distant", "dull" are results of the latter), sometimes coupled with somewhat rolled-off high frequencies.
