PS3 prices and info

In my opinion, I'd say Sony just priced themselves out of being the dominate console this time around, as well as possibly losing the next gen DVD war if it really revolved around the success of the PS3.

$599 is just too much, get a friggin computer, it can do more.

With the Wii comming to market at the same time as the PS3, and being MUCH cheaper (all sources believe), compounded by the xbox360 having all summer to build up steam... I just don't see the PS3 ever being as dominate as the PS2 was/is.

I was thinking more like for Thanksgiving

I believe the biggest thing that HD-DVD has going for it is backwards compatibility. You can play your old DVD's whereas with Blue-Ray, you need to start from scratch.

My understanding is the Blu-Ray players will also play "old school" DVDs, just like HD-DVD. It requires the use of a red laser (for DVD) and a blue laser (for HD-DVD AND Blu-Ray) so not a big deal there.

One of the biggest differences, that we already are seeing, is cost. The cost to convert a DVD disc manufacturer to HD-DVD is way less than going to Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray requires all new manufacturing equipment, where HD-DVD can be just "upgraded" from regular DVD manufacturing equipment.

Same for player manufacturing. It takes a lot less to convert DVD player manufacturing to HD-DVD than it is to scrap it and put in all new equipment to make Blu-Ray players. (just talking the actual Blu-Ray and HD-DVD pieces, not things like power supplies, cases, etc that are all pretty standard)...

That is why HD-DVD is lower cost, but in contrast, that is also why Blu-Ray has higher capacity.

Thanks for the info nickbuol. I didn't know about the Blu-Ray discs playing older DVD's.

Yes, just as CD/DVD players have dual lasers operating at a 780nm wavelength(optimal for CDs)and 650nm(optimal for DVDs, DVD-As, SACDs), the new players will also operate at the 405nm wavelength optimal for both HD formats and continue the 780/650 capability.

Enjoy the music, not the equipment.

You won't own any games on your PS3

Just another reason to not buy a PS3. Sony really is really becomming the asshat of companies.

Now I really hope Blu-ray falls on its face.

Now that is unheard of, they are really painting themselves into a corner.

I haven't seen official confirmation of this--wouldn't be too sure about it just yet.
