Definitely very (very) similar. If it's not a blatant rip -- which I'm not convinced it is -- then Coldplay may be the victim of a misplaced muse.

The only real conclusion I can come to is that I don't care for Satriani's brand of technical wankery.

It definitely sounds very similar. I certainly prefer Coldplay's version. Me no like technical wankery neither.
