I helped a long time air force friend who just retired from Sudbury & just bought a condo out here on Vancouver Island. He brought all of his audio gear with him & after looking into a box full of wires & cables, he decided 'enough already'. Up went an unobtrusive Bose Waveguide Radio/CD Changer in his living room & a Bose HT System for his TV in the computer room.

Another friend is downsizing his home as well & is going from a full, dedicated HT Projector Room to a much smaller system, most probably Bose as well.

I don't offer any advice; however, if this is happening in my own little world of older pharts, I would assume that this trend is occurring on a large scale. With Bose being the leader in these type of home packages, this much maligned but highly successful company is going to continue to do rather well I would think...

Well, I think there would be a couple of reasons here for the change in approach going forward and given the significant changes in downsizing, how I might look at it. First, assuming your friend lived in a house prior to the move, then I would assume he no longer has the space to incorporate his previous system and secondly, being in a condo, he couldn't crank up the volumes anymore to maximize the use of what he had. I know, anyway, that is how I would feel taking in to account there is now people living just on the other side of those walls.

The fact still remains that the Bose stuff is relatively expensive and there are other options out there. Speaking of the "Wave" radio, a couple of months ago I picked up an internet radio for the kitchen that along with assorted streaming and connectivity options, has access to thousands of stations. In addition, it is in stereo with a small downward firing subwoofer that even connecting an inexpensive CD player, it sounds equally as good as the Bose for half the price.

Tam I am sure once your friend settles in he will re-evaluate his audio situation. Good music doesn't have to be loud to be enjoyed and the wave radio will give way eventually.

Unfortunately people who have never heard a great system don't know what one sounds like and consequently don't know they need one. This is where audio is at a disadvantage to other highend purchases. You can go test drive a car ,or try on a ring etc but a good system has to be experienced which is hard to do. Thus people end up buying some POS HTIB and think they have the world by the ass because the box says 1400watts.

My close neighbor has a Bose system (don't know which one) in his Living Room. He and his wife are quite satisfied.
I have made some simple suggestions on alternative equipment but he feels they are hearing everything just fine and is not interested in auditioning anything else.
Difficult to lead the unknowing to better sound and force them to listen.

Invite them over for a visit and then let them hear what you have, once you plant the seed it will grow.

Paring down is a smart thing to do when the things you own begin to feel like a burden rather than necessary I guess.

At least bose can claim they are the "quitter's choice" smile

I guess that if I ever had to go into a condo or townhouse, I don't think that my close by neighbours would enjoy my twin EP800s as much as I do, ha!
