My receiver is a Denon 3808 connected to a 1080i Toshiba TV. I am running a DVI gear DVI to HDMI cable between the two. Connected to the 3808 are a PS3 (for blu ray) and a nintendo wii. So since I got it in July everything has been just groovy. I had the i/p scaler set to 1080i so that it upscaled my wii. Well, a few weeks ago it just went wonky. Anytime there is no signal input, just the plain GUI, the picture is off, with one third on the left, and the rest on the right. If I turn the wii on, the signal just becomes static. However, when I turn on the PS3, the signal is fine. Turning off the i/p scaler function results in a normal signal for all sources. Is this some random HDCP issue that randomly appeared?

I doubt it is a HDCP issue as the Wii has no need for it. I think you may want to a hard shut down, not just the standby button and unplug it for a few minutes, if that doesn't work I would try the latest firmware update for the 3808 to see if it helps. I have had some settings go a little crazy after playing around and the system became unresponsive to any changes till I did the hard power off.

I've seen the "static" screen just a few times with my Denon, but it is always very short-lived (a second or two) and has gone away on its own. The most I've ever had to do that I can remember is change inputs or press the same input button I'm on again and it self-corrects.

Along with the turning it off, you may want to try a hard reset. The instructions are buried somewhere in the manual. You will lose all your currently entered settings so it's a bit of a last resort but I mention it only because it seems like an odd one and I don't have much else, despite having a very similar setup, minus the Wii.

With great power comes Awesome irresponsibility.

I might have to try the hard reset. I have the latest firmware, and any of the above mentioned solutions did not work. If a hard reset does not work, perhaps it is a faulty scaling chip?

Well, a microprocessor reset did not fix the problem. I guess the next step is to find the receipt and send it in for repair. Which sucks because there's a bunch of movies coming out that I want to watch.

Hi Mariouzzi,

This is a stretch, but this might be related to a ground loop problem between your Wii, the PlayStation, your Denon and the Toshiba--ground loops can introduce video problems in addition to audio hum and buzz.

Try individually disconnecting the Wii power supply from the wall outlet, the PlayStation, the Denon and the Toshiba, to see if the problem disappears when one of those components is totally off, and the connection between it and the Denon is removed.

Also, why not let your Toshiba do the scaling/de-interlacing, bypassing that function in the Denon to see if that will remedy the problem.

Regards,
Alan

I don't think the Toshiba scales, its kind of old. The only thing this really affects is that I can't scale my Wii to 1080i. Through my experimenting, I only have problems when I turn on the i/p scaler. So something in that is kaput. I'll probably send it in to get fixed when school starts next semester and I'm too busy to watch movies/play games.
