Ok, I have the itch and I know nothing about sound systems. After countless hours of clicking through thread after thread I've decided on Axiom. I thought I made up my mind on the M60s based on the great reviews but now looking at my room I'm not so sure.

I have aprox 4000 cubic feet and from what I hear M22s would cut it close. My problem is that with the gigantic sectional that we just bought the sides of the right main will be 6" from the entertainment center, 6" from the wall and only have about 2 or 3 feet until the side of the couch will start. I'm worried about the sound being blocked.

Can you elevate M60s and then maybe tilt them down a little?

Do I need to go to the M22s on stands to get them above the arm of the couch? Will M22s work in this size room? I was thinking of the HSU STF-2 sub with either pair.

Thanks in advance, this forum has been great!

Matt

Matt, welcome. I'm having a little trouble following the tight quarters in what seems to be a rather large room, but if what you mean is that the woofers on the M60 would be low and only 2-3' from the couch(while the tweeter is high enough to fire over the couch), then you shouldn't be concerned. The frequencies handled by the woofers are quite omnidirectional and wouldn't be significantly blocked by the couch.

i concur with johnk.. the M60's are rather tall speakers, so the tweeter will fire over the top of the couch.. and the woofers give more dispersion to the sound, so the clearance from the speaker to the couch should be OK..

as far as stands, ajax has some M60's on stands that he built that raise them about 8-12 inches off the ground. he says they work perfect and elevate the soundstage a little. hopefully, he will post a pic or two, and let you see them.

good luck with your new system, and welcome to the forum!

(With profound apologies to all who have see this umpteen times)

John, are you saying I didn't have to build these stupid stands to get my drivers above the couch arm? NOW YOU TELL ME! Of course, in my case, the drivers would be only 8" from the arm, as opposed to Matt's 2-3'.

As you can see, Matt, it is possible to elevate the 60s. I made these "beauties" wiff my own widdle two hands. A carpenter, I ain't. No two sides are parallel or perpendicular to each other, but they do the job. I don't find any problem with them elevated. I sit relatively close to them (8') and I hear plenty of tweeter, though they are slightly above my ears, and are not tilted.

However, unless you are proficient at woodworking and have the itch, as John said, I doubt you'd have a problem just setting them directly on the floor.

Thanks for the insight guys! It sounds like the M60s will be ok.

Now how do I convince my wife they are $400 better than the M22s?:)

actually, depending on your room dimensions, the M22's might be just fine with a good sub. i know you had mentioned getting the STF-2, and that would definitely be considered a 'good' sub. i have never heard them, but the 22's are supposed to be great speakers.. they do lack in the low end, but with a sub, you wont be missing anything.. you would need to put them on stands, but you would still come out cheaper than getting M60's.

use the HT wizard, and put in your dimensions, and see what it says.. or call the 1-800 #.. they wont try and sell you nothing you dont need.. i have a 28x26x8 room, and my M60's are plenty of sound to fill it.. if your room is smaller, then you have other options.

Here's a low-tech link to my set up using M60s in a configuration similar to what you describe:

For movie watching or serious music listening, nobody sits on the end of the couch directly in front of the left M60. I haven't noticed any lack of soundstage or volume from that side, so I'm betting this will be a non-issue for you regardless of speaker choice (I'll recommend the M60s ).

Happy listening. Hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy mine.
