Luc's Facebook Comments on our grille-on pictures of the new speaker led us to wonder . . . after you buy the new omnidirectional wonder, will you leave the grilles on or take them off to see all 11 drivers in their glory?

In general, I prefer "grills on" and leaving something to the imagination!
Posted By: CatBrat Re: New Speaker: Grilles on or Off? - 03/14/12 02:43 PM
Although sometimes I admit I prefer to look at them naked, it's more practical to leave them on. Especially if little "paws with claws" are prancing about.

For me it would depend... For movie watching ect, i would want the grill on... As it would be distracting to have them off for watching a movie.. For stereo listening... i would be happy with them on or off.... With that being said, right now all of my grills are on. and my HT/Stereo listening is about 40/60... Stereo during the day, TV/movie at night.

I am a grills on kinda guy.

Grilles on for me as well.

I would leave the Grilles on but I would wish for a matching vp180 one. When I look at the front of my room I want so see matching speakers.

I prefer them off, but the WAF dictates they stay on. I will happily concede this minor point on grills given there's full support on the HT front including upgrades!

most of the time, my M80's grilles are on so it does not distract me; but sometimes i take them off as i like the looks.

I personally like seeing the drivers but I voted for grilles on. Catbrat is correct. Pets = grilles on.

All grills off for me. I want to see as much wood as possible.

Normally I leave my grills on but for this speaker I say off... mainly because I'm not a fan of those slanted lines on em. I'm more of a perpendicular kinda guy.

Grills on for movies.

Grills off for music.

Door locked for toddlers.

I'm beginning to think we may need a special closet just for the grills.
Posted By: tomtuttle Re: New Speaker: Grilles on or Off? - 03/14/12 04:57 PM
I'm just not a fan of the full-length front grill on this speaker and the M80.
Posted By: avjunkee Re: New Speaker: Grilles on or Off? - 03/14/12 05:06 PM
I thought this new speaker had segmented grills? Or does it just appear that way?
Posted By: dakkon Re: New Speaker: Grilles on or Off? - 03/14/12 05:09 PM
i think the grill is recessed in the mid range section, to give the a more "design" look, that just a flat grill... i would bet Ian and andrew used the injection molding machine to get the backing to get the correct geometry, then stretch/glue the cloth material to the form.
Posted By: Andrew Re: New Speaker: Grilles on or Off? - 03/14/12 05:12 PM
It's actually 3 separate grilles.
Posted By: avjunkee Re: New Speaker: Grilles on or Off? - 03/14/12 06:23 PM
That's what I thought. You can now have different grill configurations depending on your mood. Maybe even different colour options for the segments? I don't think I've ever seen a speaker with three different colours on the front.

Speaking of grills -- see, I'm on topic -- is it possible to buy replacement grills only in different colors? I assume it must be...
Posted By: Amie Re: New Speaker: Grilles on or Off? - 03/14/12 07:50 PM
@whippersnapper - yes, you can order replacement grilles only without having to get a new speaker. Just give Brent a buzz at 1-866-244-8796 and he'll take care of it for you.

@avjunkee - yes, we actually have an image showign the middle grille in charcoal grey. This will be added as an option in Customize Yours, for people who want that tricked-out look.

I recommend you get the grills in purple/green/red from top to bottom, so they are most transparent to their respective frequencies.

I was thinking the colors for your local NFL team...in-season of course.
Posted By: avjunkee Re: New Speaker: Grilles on or Off? - 03/14/12 09:23 PM
Very cool. I wonder who's idea it was to segment the grill?

I'm thinking strip tease artist, perhaps.

Are the grills the only difference between the left and right versions?
Posted By: St_PatGuy Re: New Speaker: Grilles on or Off? - 03/15/12 12:53 AM
I like the grilles off. Especially with a nice wood finish like that.

Like Tom said, the full length grille just covers too much, but I know that is predicated on the amount of drivers.
Posted By: SBrown Re: New Speaker: Grilles on or Off? - 03/15/12 01:00 AM
Looks like it, otherwise would it be stereo. cool And what if you want a third for center? Or are these just for two channel, or can I conglomerate my M80's and center with Q's for the ultimate glory in listening performance?

That and the angles of the rear baffles.

The production grilles will have a reveal at the top and bottom of the baffle, allowing more of it to be visible. smile

Thanks for the info, Andrew. It's a shame to cover up so much of the speaker if one gets a custom finish!

Ah! Thank you! It was not apparent to me from the pictures that the rear baffles are not parallel to the front.
