It's time for our traditional Name The New Speaker Contest! Although internally we have been referring to the speaker as the 'Not-the-M100' , we figure that will look a little odd on the cartons! Myself, I’ve been partial to Andrew's nickname: the LFR, short for Linear Field Radiator, which is what he calls the technology that drives these speakers.

But as we know, nobody is better at naming speakers than Axiomites! (Yah, we're lookin' at you, Full Metal Bracket. And you, Audiobyte!) So throw your name in the hopper and let's see what you come up with for this beautiful new addition to the family. The winner will receive a pair of M3s or equivalent Axiom Dollars. If two people enter the same name, we'll take the first one according to the order in which the posts were received. Winner will be chosen on Wednesday the 21st.

Let the names begin!

I think it should be called the Amie.
It is alliterative.
It is named after someone here that everyone likes a lot.
It is a simple easy to remember name.
It is a "girl next door" name that will inspire good feelings and memories in people.
It is the French word for Friend. ( I think)

200 would allow for both higher and lower designations in future models
11 is simply the number of drivers & tweeters

RF200/11 where F could be for Field

LFR200/11 this is obvious

Axiom Unity

Unity refers both to the uniting of Andrew's and Ian's ideas in speaker design to create this speaker and to the technology within the speakers that brings the front and rear sound fields together.

When you eventually expand the LFR line, you could stick with your same naming scheme and shrink Unity to just U, e.g. Axiom U22.

Let's see...

"M" in keeping with the current series;
"D" to denote the DSP factor;
and then some numerals that will be catchy.

I've got it --

"MD 2020"

Or has that been used already?
Posted By: whippersnapper Re: You Knew This Was Coming . . . - 03/17/12 03:28 AM
Okay, seriously, it's not going to make much sense to break too far from the naming conventions of your other speakers, but it needs to be different enough.

How about "DM 74"?

That would represent the DSP version of the M series speakers, sporting 7 drivers in front and 4 in back.

Axiom Convoy - Because that's a lot of drivers.

I had already suggested LFR200. I used 200 because I didn't feel the jump from 80 to 100 was reflective of this model.
Posted By: ClubNeon Re: You Knew This Was Coming . . . - 03/17/12 06:30 PM
I like the LFR- naming system too. If you want to keep it one letter, how about O, for Omnidirectional? Also, jumping over the 100 to 200 is a good idea, as the VP series reside in the 100s. But will there be smaller LFRs in the future? So maybe LFR290 (since it is larger than the M80)?

Posted By: a401classic Re: You Knew This Was Coming . . . - 03/17/12 08:14 PM
OK here goes...

DSP 1804 R/L
- or -
LRF 1804 R/L

DSP or LFR for the aforementioned reasons.

Now for the numbering sequence;
1 (extra driver) up front
80 rest of the array up front looks like an M80
4 (number of drivers in back)

L/R - should be obvious

A smaller version (if there will be one based on the M60 that I queried earlier would come out as:

LFR 1602

I (personally) think there needs to be additional number(s) to set them apart from the front-drivers-only speakers.

As part of a HT package, building on the "Epic" name, could be the "Intrepid" series.

OK, back to the fuel injection....

Hi to all Axiom members.

Though I'm new to this forum I've been visiting here for over a year now. Back in the fall I placed my first order then started a layaway until later this year, I can hardly wait.

Now to the subject at hand, the naming of this new speaker. I'll start by giving the name followed by an explanation thereafter. Thor Speaker Collection. (TSC-5011)

In Norse mythology, Thor is a majestic hammer wielding God associated with thunder and lighting. Thor also possesses great strength and is a protector over mankind. In my opinion those words perfectly describe what Axiom Audio is trying to achieve audibly with this new speaker series. In a nut shell, I would wager that the speakers will be an OOOOOOOOOOOHH so powerful listening experience.

This speaker collection is just the first, with more
to come later, I'm sure. 50 refers back to the first generation of the Millennia series. 11 is for the number of drivers being used.

Where Thor watched over mankind, here, Axiom watches
out over us in the audio world, and for that I'm humbly thankful.

speaking of "warm glow of energy" (nice image, by the way), with the bass that my M80s put out, it makes the walls move/flex, and after a while those walls warm up from the internal friction; free heating in the winter.

How about staying with the marketing and going with O100. O for omnidirectional. But in secret the O really stands for orgasmic.

Some thoughts: with the advance in technology in these speakers - it's such a leap – I wonder if we have a Toyota/Lexus moment. You know the story: Toyota had been making quality cars for decades, but wanted to go upscale as well. So they designed a luxury car that they knew would rock the automotive world. Problem is, the people who were shopping BMWs, Mercedes, and Cadillacs would balk at paying $40,000 (this was 1989) for any Toyota sedan, no matter how good it was. New Camrys were selling for about $15,000, so, by comparison, the new flagship model was two to three times as expensive. Hence the new name, Lexus, and a new car division of the Toyota Motor Corporation. The rest, as they say, is history.

So, now there’s a new Axiom flagship speaker/DSP board combo that’s about two to three times as expensive as the previous flagship, the M80. Will people pay that much for an Axiom product? Undoubtedly, as the EP800 and A1400 demonstrate. However, there will be some who balk at the idea. How do we capture those people? Well, by having them hear a pair, of course. But until that point, how do we let them know just what a leap this is?

That said, I’m sure that with the decades of work you’ve put into the good name of Axiom, you don’t want that to disappear in the launch of this speaker line. This will be Axiom’s flagship speaker, and it’s right to put the Axiom name on it. And you probably don't want to spawn a new division of Axiom, with the paperwork and legal wrangling, yada yada.

As a compromise, I’d consider making this more than just another speaker line, as far as naming goes. LFR is good as far as suggesting what the speaker does, functionally, but it’s not a sexy name. And I just don’t see lumping this new speaker in with the other floorstanders on the web site, with a little box containing the pricing for the M50, M60, M80 – even the M100 – and then this guy. This guy is special and needs his own prominent space on the web page and in the company.

I was kicking around names:

Signature Series (Paradigm did that),

Reference Series (a lot of companies have used this, with Klipsch, Infinity, and Energy on the first page of a Google search. Might get lost in the noise, but, then again, people will know what you mean when you say “Reference Series”. Possible ad campaign: “Sure, you’ve tried the rest. Now try OUR Reference Series…”)

Ultimate Series (could work – signifies the degree of difference between the new speaker and the M series)

But my favorite is:

Masterworks Series: The “M” series taken to a new level!

This distinguishes the speaker as a level above the rest of the offerings and gives it the panache it deserves. Now, the individual speakers in the Series still have to have names, and I see two options:

1. Use “Masterworks” as the name (instead of LFR) and finish with a numerical value, in this case, 100 since the front is the same as the M100, giving us the Masterworks 100. However, this would likely get confused with the upcoming M100, given peoples’ tendency to abbreviate things. So, I'd:

2. Keep LFR in there and call it the Masterworks Series LFR-100. Or Masterworks Series LFR-200 if you're presenting it, as Ian said, as essentially two M towers in one. As others have mentioned, you could go with a dashed name with the number of drivers up front and in the back, e.g. Masterworks Series LTR 7-4. That'd give a quick mental impression for future models - e.g. people would know just what a 5-3 or a 4-2 would consist of.

Thanks for reading my mini-essay and providing the opportunity for me to kick some ideas around. Hope it's helpful.

What I like about Axiom is there is no "flagship" in quality. It's the same drivers, just in different configurations with different technology. This makes the axiom speaker lineup different than most other manufacturers, because there is no new "tier" of speakers -- they all the have same great quality built for different purposes.

Therefore I think it's important not to suggest this speaker is in a different class than other Axiom speakers.

Notice how we named the M3 outdoor speakers -- "Algonquin" but still M3. They are the same with an additional special name. However, the model number did not change.

It is important to keep the speaker numbering simple for customers to grasp the differences and similarities within the growing family of Axiom speakers. I think we should work off of the current product naming system.

This speaker is a "modified" or "upgraded" version of the M80. It looks and sounds just like the M80, but with a different twist on the backside. I think "M80" should stay in the name to prevent confusion. This is consistent with your current product name and branding.

The M80-D has a wonderful ring to it. It signifies this is a special version of the M80s.

I also really like the M80-LFR. The three extra letters add powerful significance. LFR-M80 is also a possibility, but I'm not a fan of it.

When you add more LFR models, an LFR module would be "added" to the back of any speaker in the current lineup. M60-LFR. M22-LFR. Etc. The naming is crystal-clear.

Of course, adding a special secondary name (like the algonquin's) would be nice, but the model number is how these speakers will be identified and understood.

You can introduce this product by saying "We took our award winning M80's and created a sound of a different kind ... presenting the M80-LFR's"

In a press release people would immediately associate with the M80's, and a new, important technology added to them. See how this is works? I think it's a winner wink

That's a good point, Dan.

I'll submit M80 RSR or M80 GT, in that case, although RSR is so much cooler, and could mean something like Reverse Sound Radiator.

I see your point as far as the drivers, and probably the "wood" casing that they are in, being the same.

But, to me, the key point is all of the electronic gadgetry that hooks up to them and makes them worth $3760, compared to a pair of M80s worth $1440. Different.

There are a lot of descriptors that could imply the improvement in sound to a higher, more accurate or reference level. A lot of these have already been taken as company names or product lines. Among the "high" names are Apex, Aperion, Apogee, Ascend (four and we're not even out of the As), Pinnacle, Meridian, etc. Among the accurate/reference names are Axiom, Paradigm, Martin-Logan's Purity (I wanted that name!).

Other possibilities as far as the accurate/reference theme:

Fidelis Series / Fidelis LTR-100 / Fidelis 100

The only audio thing I found in potential conflict is a high-end audio store in NH. We could send Mark over with an Olive Garden lunch to "negotiate" wink use of the name.

Ideal Series / Ideal LTR-100 / Ideal 100

I think that the name should be far from M80. Calling the 2 M80's, plus or minus a letter, would be too confusing to most everybody.

That's why I like the new tier with a completely different name. Something short, like the Viola series.

Viola series.
Gangsta series.
Magna series.
Magma series.
Eagle series.
Maple series.
Dream series.
Northwind series.
Polar series.
Quartz series.
Amor series.
Diamond series.
Emerald series.

Give each speaker in the new series the name of a gem. Such as Diamond, Emerald, Ruby, Jasmine, etc.

When I win, I want my pair of M3's in piano white. smile

I think there should be a new serie of speaker. Why? because the LFR technology can still apply to smaller speakers.

Here come the RADIANT SERIE.

This could be the RADIANT BM100 (Bipolar M100) paving the way to other radiant speakers.

The complete serie could be :
RADIANT BM100
RADIANT BM80
RADIANT BM60
RADIANT BM50
RADIANT BM22
RADIANT BW22
RADIANT BQS8 :-)
RADIANT BVP180
RADIANT BVP160
...

I don't think it should be a SIGNATURE or ELITE serie because it's a different kind of technology. You could still build a ELITE serie of current models with upgraded components.

Just curious, I was on the Emotiva website in which there was a link to a pre-order Axiom site naming the speakers the M100 V3(Audioholics pre-choice) at a pre-order price of $2790pr.(reg. $3795)shipping April 15. If a name hasn't been finalized yet, how is this possible, where did it come from and, if so, has anyone out there received this information because I sure haven't.

From Ian's post in the thread announcing the speaker:

I have been working out the final pricing for everything over the past few days and here it is:

I will start with the DSP boxes on their own. Though the DSP box is included with the new “yet-to-be-named speaker”, as the system will not work without it, we will also be making these DSP boxes available for the M80 v3 and the M80/VP180 v3 combination (and soon to follow for the M60 and M60/VP160). The addition of the DSP box to these models allows us to make finer adjustments to the family of curves than what’s possible with only the passive crossover. It makes a noticeable - though don’t expect dramatic - improvement to these models. For a pair of speakers this can be achieved using a single broadband DSP board in the box.

For the versions that controls the centre channel also there needs to be two broadband DSP boards in the box. These DSP boxes are factory reprogrammable and we will have a program available to do this in order for you to get updates or to change from one speaker model to another.

These DSP boxes will sell for $880 for the single board version capable of controlling one pair of either M80 v3 or M60 v3.

The dual board version for controlling your centre channel and front channels will sell for $1,190. These will be available for shipping on June 15.

We will be offering a pre-purchase price of $690 for the single board version and $940 for the dual board version from now until mid-May.

The new “yet-to-be-named speaker” comes with the dual board version of the DSP. If you are using these speakers as part of a system and wish to have your VP180 or VP160 also utilize your DSP box we will have this available as an option. This box would include three DSP boards and would cost an extra $310.

Essentially our new Linear Field Radiating Omnidirectional speakers are pretty close to two M80s in each cabinet. This new “yet-to-be-named speaker” model will sell for $3,760 which includes the pair of speakers and the dual board DSP box. They will be ready to ship on June 15.

We are going to do a 2-tier pre-purchase promotion on this new model. From now until April 15 you can pre-purchase them for $2,790. Additionally the first 10 pair sold will have special rear labels that are serialized with a straightforward 1 to 10 (R&L) and be signed by Andrew and myself. From April 16 to May 15 the pre-purchase offer will be $2,990.

All the various “Customize Yours” options can be seen at New Speaker. You can also place an order from this page.

They're taking pre-orders despite having not settled on one of my name submissions just yet. smile

After 17 pages, and with Cat spewing out everything to flood the thread in hopes of winning ;-), this has probably already been entered, but I am too lazy to look to see...

Axiom Genesis-One (or some number)

I was trying to think of a word that signified a "new beginning" and the word genesis came to mind.... OK, a thesaurus helped generate ideas...

Genesis is a pretty universal word, used in music (the group Genesis), Star Trek (remember the planet that was "grown" and ended up bringing Spock back?), and so forth, but with a radically new design, there should be something to signify Axiom's leadership into this type of sound imaging.

EDIT: I just went back and searched, and it hasn't been used in any previous post.

Wait. I still have a few ideas left. grin

You know the thought of quoting the entire unabridged dictionary did cross my mind.

I'm sure by now I've disqualified myself, just out of spite.

Sorry for not updating everyone yesterday! We got down to a shortlist of about 18 names. Then we had to go through and eliminate the ones that were already loudspeaker series names . . . and now it's back out to the team for voting. It was a bit crazy doing it in the middle of show setup but we're still working on it - sorry for the delay! And thanks for all the great entries!

Hi Amie! I hope the show goes great for you guys!

Is there a way you can PM me the names of the judges? I'd like to know how much I should budget for bribe-quality chocolate, beer, and Lear Jets.

I'm doing a terrible job at keeping everyone posted on the show, I know - I think the best thing would be if you all just came up to see for yourself. smile

Barring that . . . there sure are a lot of amazing setups here. Some are pretty wild just from room layout, and some are pretty wild from a product perspective. One that really caught my attention today was the Devialet Integrated Amplifier. (http://www.devialet.com). The thing in the second shot is a poor picture of their very cool remote.

I heard about it from Doug Schneider, and he made it sound like the future of audio had arrived . . . "Here's what makes the Devialet D-Premier so special: it uses a new kind of amplifier design that marries pure-class-A amplification with a class-D amplifier. The class-A portion is used for voltage, and the class-D section is used for current." - Doug Schneider, SoundStage CES article

They've got a really interesting display, with all the pieces of the product opened up and set out for inspection. If you're stopping by the show, make it a point to check it out! They're across the lounge from our room.

Don't worry - you definitely won't get lost trying to find us!

Lots going on on the Bryston side of our demo room and tomorrow I'll update you on Andrew's new favourite toy . . .

Until then!

they really are awesome! Impressive sound. It's great to be able to ear systems that cost a lot more and be able to compare them to something that you can actually buy.

The cheapest system I've seen at the salon was a pair of cabasse CineOle which is priced at 1800$.. After that it climbed to 6000 for the cheapest of the cheapest.. Most speakers were priced around 10000$ (one Focal pair was priced at 96000$).

They are normally using interconnects that cost most than the LFR1100.

So far so good. It sounded better than a few 15000$ pairs

Did you take any of your own music to listen to on them? Just wondering if you can go into any more detail on the sound. I can't wait to hear them myself.

I didn't bring anything, took me and my buddy 5 hours to enter in every rooms but we would have need 10h more! smile

I can hardly go into details because my audiophile vocabulary consists of words like : wow, kick-ass and awesome!

The speakers were sharing a 70'x30' room. I'm sure that you get something very different in our home. They were placed like 4 feet from the wall and there was no walls directly on the side.

I actually went behind the speaker and what you hear from behind is excellent. Since the bass is omnidirectional it's like having 2 full range speakers back to back. I'm sure that with these speakers you don't need to put the volume very loud. You can fill the room with sound at very low volume.

Reminds me of the bigger Mirage loudspeakers.

I personally enjoy being surrounded by sound. I often listen to music in 7.1 instead of 2.0. I would definitely see myself enjoying music with these in a 2.0 setup.

I'm anxious to see if someone will actually put this in a small room (12x12). These babies are huge and can really sing loud!! But if you need to put them 4 feet from each wall they would be 4 feet apart from each other.
