This was announced today: Equal Pay

I know we have some tennis fans, so I wanted to see what people's thoughts are. I like the men's and women's game, but I don't agree with the equal pay since the sets are 5 vs 3. Make that part equal too, and I'm all for it.

It's not about how long they're on the court, it's about how many butts they put in the stands (read: revenue generation). The woman's game is just as popular (if not more so) than the men's game. I'm sure there are pleny of people who've never heard of Roger Federer. How many do you think have never heard of Maria Sharapova or better yet, Anna Kournakova (and she doesn't even play anymore!)

Expecting the same exact performace from the women as the men makes about as much sense as determining the prize money for auto racing based on how fast the cars are.
Sports is entertainment. Frankly, I'm a little surprised this topic has been upside-down for so long. I'd have thought - as a very casual fan - that women's tennis drew bigger crowds than the men.

But it's got to be market-driven at some point. There is no way the revenue stream is going to enable the WNBA to pay Lauren Jackson the same money as Kevin Garnett gets. "Equal Pay for Equal Work" has got to include a measurement of the literal financial value of the work in addition to the tasks performed, especially related to entertainment. On a certain level, athletes are independent contractors who are selling the right to view their performances. Supply and Demand applies.

Very interesting. Thanks for bringing it up.
Personally; I find that the gals are a lot more fun to watch, so in my opinion, perhaps they should be paid MORE?

You know, I find myself watching women's tennis more than men's. Might have something to do with the slow motion intstant replays. . .

Everyone knows most woman athletes' jubblies are less jiggly due to their athleticism.

Serena Williams strongly disagrees.
When I watch; I tend to watch all aspects of the performance. Yes; I like to keep abreast of all the issues, but I wouldn't have a leg to stand on if I didn't figure in everything happening and face all the issues.
Rich.

LOL! Very nicely done Rich. Yes, those are the three things I enjoy about the sport as well. The same could be said for figure skating and gymnastics.
