Has anybody here seen this movie besides me yet? Very unusual and chilling at the same time. Not for kids!!!

I hope to check it out soon. Really liked "Hellboy"--felt they got the tone just right.

People who don't watch subtitled movies are missing out on a ton of good movies.

I've heard great things about it. I have it on my "to watch" list, although I doubt that I will ever own it.
It isn't something my wife would watch, and obviously not for the kids, so no buying for me...
Tremendous movie. Saw it in the theatres twice. Very imaginative, great visuals, great story telling. A fairy tale made for adults. Be forewarned however, the movie contains a lot more Spanish Civil war content than you might think, and a few very graphic scenes. Del Toro is one of my favourite directors working today.
Yes I should have mentioned in my original post about the content balance. The fantasy sequences in the film are in total only about 10 minutes or so but to me the rest of the film is just as interesting in a difficult to watch... difficult to look away kind of way.
One of my favorite movies from the past year or two. I primarily associate del Toro with Blade 2, which was...OK, I guess. Hellboy was better, but Pan's Labyrinth is in another class altogether.
Don't be expecting something in the spirit of Hellboy/Blade 2, that's for sure! You'll be in for a shock.
I enjoyed it, very difficult to explain the range of feelings and emotions this movie brings out. By no means your typical Hollywood production with a Fairy Tale ending.
The little missus and I watched this movie a couple of evenings back and we both enjoyed it very much, best movie we've seen in a long time.
I really got watch this movie...probably not with the wife tho...is it a horror type of movie? She hates that type of stuff...

Robb, this isn't a horror film and I believe your wife would *probably* enjoy the movie, my wife hates horror films and really enjoyed this one.

Bob, the reason why I asked is I heard it had disturbing horror like scenes. I'll check out the trailers and stuff again.
I'm going to blockbuster today to pick-up the DVD.
I've heard only very good reviews about this movie. A friend of mine told me she'd to walk-off the movie at the theater , she said it's too intense but not in scary, horror way.
Robb, the movie has several scenes that are disturbing but not in the style of a horror movie, if your wife doesn't like graphic scenes and views of how cruel people can be, the movie may not be for her. On the other hand there are many heart rendering scenes also.

Heart rendering would be, well... extraordinarily graphic.

Speaking of spanish movies.. At the rate things are going in this country tv's and movies will all be in spanish and have english subtitles. I didnt know this was all in spanish... Might have to pass on it.
Just rented letters from iwo jima and found out its all subtitles... Not that I dont like subtitles.. I just dont want to have to read them for 2 hours long.
I guess you won't be watching Apocalypto, all subtitles. Another interesting movie.
I learned how to read via the Axiom Audio message board, so subtitles are a breeze.

Yeah, maybe not. Too much like reading a book. Even though when you see a movie where everyone is speaking english and obviously they didnt in the proper setting of the movie, at least you dont have to read all the subtitles which always seems to take away from the movie because your not paying as much attention to the movie while your reading all the words.
Now I'm confused. I thought the whole movie was a fantasy type movie. At least every trailer that I've seen hints at this. What is the movie actually about? If it's not a fantasy, what is it? I hate it when they mislead you into thinking it's one thing and it turns about to be another.

Yeah, those other countries shouldn't even bother making movies.

Well...If I had to classify it in one word, I'd say "fantasy", but it isn't like any other fantasy I've seen. Most of the time is spent in a real historical setting in Franco-era Spain.
It's a great movie, but don't expect it to be anything like a typical "fantasy" film.

I agree. Even though I can't understand the actual words, the feelings of the actor are conveyed. And, like Peter said, I forget I'm reading after a couple of minutes and the subtitles are only an annoyance on a technical level--like if the subtitles are in white and the actors are wearing white t-shirts.

Great film! I was surprised by some of the graphic violence as I was anticipating a more fantasy type film. Personally it was my fav film of last year. There's no way a film like this could have been made in North America. I quite liked his film The Devil's Backbone as well.
