What is our resident doctor's diagnosis?
Posted By: St_PatGuy Re: Tom Cruise... - 01/17/08 01:22 AM
I'll never be able to watch "Cocktail" again.

Wait. . .I was never able to watch "Cocktail" to begin with.

Whew.

Maybe he took that "Goose, Cougar's in trouble..." line a tad too far.
Posted By: tomtuttle Re: Tom Cruise... - 01/17/08 02:11 AM
What an arrogant so-and-so.

Apparently, Scientology is "'The ethics of doing The Right Thing' for the incredibly weak-minded"

Wow.
Posted By: RickF Re: Tom Cruise... - 01/17/08 02:17 AM
God forbid if he's around something such as an auto accident, 'move over coppers, get back firemen and don't you get in the way paramedics ... Tom Cruise is HERE!!'

Geez

I'm waiting for the night I watch the news and read about a bunch of Cruise's followers who just drank some of his "Cocktails", laying around in bunk beds, with Nike shoes on, waiting for the Hail "Cruise" Bop comet to come and take them to their mother ship, lights out...

May God forgive them for they no not what they do.....

Megalomania

That is the scariest human being I've seen in a long time. \:o Heaven forbid he should ever run for office. \:\(

He's not very eloquent.

Oh, I take it back. He's the IAS Freedom Medal of Valor winner, so he must be okay.

Funny you should post this, because I've been very anti-Cruise and anti-Scientology for some time. I had seen this clip of Cruise, and I've been following the story of the new biography on him that came out two days ago.

Remember when he lectured Matt Lauer on the evils of psychiatry on the Today Show? Scientologists have been anti-psychiatry, very vehemently so, since their founding. I believe it was because L. Ron Hubbard realized that any good psychiatrist would call him crazy, and would therefore be a threat to him and his new cult that he was starting (more later).

So in the next few days' aftermath, Katie Couric asked her co-hosts, on air, about Cruise, "Is he the conductor on the crazy train, or what?" The answer, it is clear, is "Yes, he is."

There are numerous good web sites that expose Scientology as the cult that it is. A money-grabbing, brain-washing, delusional cult. Operation Clambake is a good place to start if you want to learn the truth about scientology. Here is a reprint of a damning Time article from 1991.

Hopefully, the more their practices come to light and the more we all laugh at them, the less power they will attain.

Hey Cruise, all aboard the crazy train.
Posted By: tomtuttle Re: Tom Cruise... - 01/17/08 05:49 PM
Good show, JP. Thanks for the links.

You gotta admit, though, Elizabeth Shue looked hot in Cocktail. At least I think she did. It's been about 20 years, so I might be mistaken.

Nevermind.
Posted By: Hutzal Re: Tom Cruise... - 01/17/08 06:33 PM
he is pretty crazy, thats for sure.
Posted By: JaimeG Re: Tom Cruise... - 01/17/08 06:40 PM
Well, the majority of mainstream religions started as some kind of cult. I find it fascinating and frightening at the same time to see the beginning of a new ‘religion’.

The way Scientology is going, I wouldn’t be surprised if in 500 years Hollywood becomes the scientology’s Vatican city :P /sarcasm

That is certainly NOT true. Cults like scientology are manipulative, brainwashing, moneygrabbing etc... Many religions didn't start out that way at all.

JP is right about Hubbard and Psychology, I remember reading about a bad experience he had or something. Also scientology tends to claim it's a scientific movement to debunk scientology, then when scientists criticize them for their unscientific kooky claims, they claim to be a religion, they just go back and forth to get away with it (plus get off paying taxes).

Today at work I called everyone into my office for a training video. Groans of protest turned into stunned silence as I played the Tom Cruise video.

I'm an evil boss.

Yeah, I like your version better.

We spent the rest of the day discussing Scientology. It was a good team-building day. Also, spent some time on Wikipedia reading up on L. Ron Hubbard's creation-- is about all I have to say.
Posted By: EFalardeau Re: Tom Cruise... - 01/18/08 01:34 AM
This is so funny! I did not call anyone in my office, but I did send the link as a "mandatory viewing" to my employees. At least 25% of them knew about it. 100% are still scared of the guy...

Jerry O'Connell has done a parody video and it is worth a look.

My opinion of JO'C just went waaay up.

Dr. Drew's stock: up!

Tom Cruise and his posse: down even further.

Explanation.
Posted By: St_PatGuy Re: Tom Cruise... - 06/12/08 06:00 PM
I cannot get over how monumentally frightening Tom Cruise is.
Posted By: Capn_Pickard Re: Tom Cruise... - 06/12/08 08:33 PM
Except that it was Cruise's attorney, not him, making the comment. And I tend to agree with the attorney on this one. Drew P. kind of pulls a name out of the blue, links him to a questionable quasi religious organization, and then implies a diagnosis.

Even if he guesses right, it's a bit unprofessional to make these kinds of comments. People are understandably a little touchy about being called crazy by board certified doctors because it migth have more (undeserved) credibility than if, say, TMZ ran a story calling you crazy.

You'd think that the doc would be a bit more judicious with his purported diagnoses is all.
Posted By: medic8r Re: Tom Cruise... - 06/12/08 08:46 PM
I see your point, but Cruise puts himself out there in the media spotlight. He actively promotes Scientology as the "answer" to all kinds of things. He, himself, has linked himself firmly into what is widely accepted to be a cult. See my post (far) above for references.

So to reflect on his behavior is, to me, analogous to discussing any other news topic, e.g. politics, sports, that's in the public discourse.

Dr. Drew implied that Cruise has issues. He implied that a diagnosis may exist, but he was not diagnosing him. He did not say, "Cruise is bipolar" or "Cruise has thisorthat personality disorder." He did mention that Cruise suffered abuse, which, as the piece says, is fairly common knowledge. He does speculate on what effect that abuse could have on a person, e.g. Cruise.

So, sure, he may have barely crossed a line, but the lawyer's response made me laugh with its bluster and hyperbole. Like a commenter said, any time you throw the Hitler bomb in there, you've lost credibility.

My 2 cents.

Good points, both Capn and JP!

That one clip of Cruise espousing Scientology is still fresh in my head, and it will always color my comments toward him.

Yeah Sean. That clip haunts me, and gives me pause.

I think it gives some women menopause.
Posted By: Capn_Pickard Re: Tom Cruise... - 06/13/08 01:29 AM
Fair enough. Cruise is a celebrity and, as part of that fame comes a relinquishment of certain aspects of privacy that we all enjoy. And I totally agree about the Hitler bomb detracting from the credibility of the statement. It's really hard to take seriously.

But the point that his lawyer was making was that ascribing certain assumed or perceived qualities of the group to all its collective members is a form of discrimination ("cult-ism"?) not unlike that which the nazis used to commit atrocities to the Jews. The difference in magnitude is what makes the analogy ridiculous.

True. What sort of auditory neglect did we all suffer as children to be part of this Axiom cult?

A-NI-MALLLL!!!

With him and the Swedish Chef, there's been a refreshing Muppet influence around the boards lately.

That was one of my favorite shows as a kid.

Still is, now that I think about it.

I figure its about time to reflect what I am going to be doing in 3 months time, going to school for drumming!

What I really want to know is, how did you know that I was putting Animal on my sampler CD?

Spooky.

Well, if not Animal, at least TMBG and their Dial-a-drummer bit from a live recording of "She's Actual Size".

Heh.

Hutz, since you aspire to the drums, I thought you'd appreciate this: Buddy Rich versus Animal, drum battle from the Muppet Show c. 1978.

I couldn't find it in English, but the drums sound the same either way, eh?

I love the look on Animal's face at 2:05 and 2:35 ...

So imagine my surprise when I'm cruisin' the streets in my Bumblebee Camaro and I see this sign:

It made me dig up this old thread.

Funny how this thread morphed into Muppet talk. We were all foreshadowing!
