I thought I would bring this to the attention of the many 3808 owners here, apparently Denon is offering some upgrades to the 3808. There is some discussion about them on this AVS thread

Not that interesting of an update for $100, unless of course the two addyssey features turn out to be really cool. I find that unlikely b/c I don't even use the audyssey EQ as it is now.

Glad to see they are comming up with some 'upgrades', but I always thought the 'add new feature' section of the GUI was going to be free.

I didn't read the thread yet, but for the price of the receiver I think any upgrades should be free. Thanks for posting that information though Jason.

A couple people have commented on that thread about Dolby volume and dynamic volume, both of which they are very excited about. Cam anyone explain this to me?

Thanks
Cam

Here is the link to Denon's press release and in it they give descriptions about the new features. I like the Dynamic volume and will with hold any thoughts on the dynamic EQ until after I have the upgrade.

Leave it to Denon to charge for stuff like that.

OTOH, it is adding features, and since the receiver is becoming more computer like... Charging for additional features in software is not exactly uncommon.

I am struggling to think of anything, other than gaming systems(PS3) that after 1 year of use would give you a free upgrade of the older products to the latest product line. I agree free would be nice but I don't think there is any product out there that offers new features for free. This would be like the PS3 getting a free update to the same features of the PS4, I don't think even Sony would do that for free.

Now, if they were charging for bugfixes, that would be another matter entirely. But that doesn't sound like what they're doing.

Free bug fixes are the norm.

Somehow I feel I'll probably be going for the upgrade (once Jason buys it and tells us all how he likes it)... both features sound interesting enough to try out.

Interesting to know what's coming down the pipe.

I think there's a lot more difference in features between generations of consoles than that of receivers. However, I can see how an upgrade like this, even costing money, is better for existing owners than making them buy a whole new receiver. Still, this kind of thing can get a little dangerous, with them perhaps sometimes purposely leaving out features just so they can charge you more for them later.

It's like sports video games. . .they never want to quite reach perfection so they can "improve" on something and basically sell you the same game next year.

Good analogy - there's not much of meaning that changes year to year in the most popular sports games any longer other than the rosters, though people do grab those up year after year...
