Wow, they're going to re-render all of the old episodes in HD.

South Park: TV's Longest Week

 Quote:
Although Comedy Central won’t be HD until January 2009, “South Park” episodes are already being produced in HD. An even bigger task is going back to re-render the first 174 episodes!

“We’ve always been digital pack rats, so we still have all the Maya (and before season 5, Alias PowerAnimator) scene files we used to create the show,” says J.J. “Since HD has become a real possibility, we’ve started re-rendering all those old episodes at full 1080p, which also means re-framing all the shots from standard 4:3 to full 16:9.

“It’s very labor intensive, but it also means that we’ll be the only animated show from the pre-HD world that will have its entire catalog of episodes in full native 1080p. It’s pretty sweet.”

I'm sure glad they have money.

I hope they don't just stretch some scenes to reformat.

"Oh my God... You've stretched Kenny"

"You Bastards!"

I love South Park, but what's the effin' point? Honestly.

-- You will be able to see the scissor marks on the paper cutouts they use.

-- The six to seven total colors they use will look more vibrant.

-- It will reduce motion blur when the heads of Terrance and Phillips separate from their jaws as they speak.

But most excitingly!

-- For the first time, we will be able to truly identify if Scuzzlebutt does indeed have David Hasselhoff for a left leg.

I dunno. I've been enjoying the fact that the Simpsons have (finally) gone hi-def. It doesn't change the content, but the same could be said about any programming material.

But if someone ever does 'Eat Bart's shorts,' do you really want to see that in HD?

OR

Is it Edna krabappel that you want to see in high definition?

Actually, it's all about Lurleen Lumpkin:

Hmm, what would Freud say about that microphone?

DON'T make me do something in Photoshop that I'll later regret! \:\)

It doesn't make it any funnier, but I actually do like how much cleaner it looks in high-def, and considering how crappy the show looked in the beginning, there's a lot of room for improvement.

Forgive me for being too nerdy/picky here, but Scuzzlebutt's leg was Patrick Duffy.

Wow, you've just given me a reason to get my wife into watching South Park! \:\)

Your right, but to me they are like the same person. \:\)

I have received South Park season 12 on Blu-ray last week and I was stunned by how good it looks (while retaining the construction paper look).
Posted By: CV Re: South Park Re-rendered - 03/19/09 02:32 PM
I will eventually get that, but I AM kind of sad since the first 11 seasons look so good together in their consistently packaged DVD box sets.
Posted By: EFalardeau Re: South Park Re-rendered - 03/19/09 02:49 PM
I just realized that I read in this post that were going to re-render the first 11 seasons! That would be HILARIOUS! After all their episodes ranting against Lucas and Spielberg and re-mastering! Ha!
Posted By: medic8r Re: South Park Re-rendered - 03/19/09 02:54 PM
Wow, that's a really good point. They would usually rip on someone for being that hypocritical...
Posted By: CV Re: South Park Re-rendered - 03/19/09 04:17 PM
There's a major difference between improving the quality of content and actually altering the content. If all Lucas and Spielberg did was make the movies look and sound better, that would be one thing.
Posted By: medic8r Re: South Park Re-rendered - 03/19/09 04:19 PM
OK, that's true.

Plus, I usually like Trey and Matt since they are friends with Rush (the band, not the comedian).
Posted By: EFalardeau Re: South Park Re-rendered - 03/19/09 04:57 PM
The difference is a very fine line as the accusations were about re-releasing for the purpose of making money. There are no other reasons for Comedy Central to re-do the episodes in HD but to re-sell the property to current owners of DVDs. I would be curious to know if Trey Parker is actually happy about the re-mastering (remember that South Park is the property of Comedy Central, not of Parker and Stone) or not.
Posted By: MarkSJohnson Re: South Park Re-rendered - 03/19/09 05:03 PM
In all fairness, one other possibility for remastering isn't to re-sell another copy to those who have already bought the DVD set, but to entice new, first time buyers who may not want to invest in an "older" format for a big, 12-season set...

I don't know one way or another, but I think sometimes conspiricy theorists assume that every Blu-Ray re-release is to gouge the customer. Some, I'm sure, are. But other times it might be done to future-proof their body of work and keep it viable in the market.

That was hardly the only criticism, and I wouldn't even say it was the major criticism. Do you really believe there would be as much vitriol toward Lucas if he hadn't added new special effects in the cheesiest way possible and made Greedo shoot first and then totally undermined the magic of the original trilogy with the crappy prequels and then went on to ruin Indiana Jones as well, having learned nothing from the feedback?

Seriously, I gotz one of deez for ev'ry ockayshun!

I agree with CV on this one. The new special effects were so different from the originals that they didn't blend and reminded you that you were watching a movie. Same thing bothers me when they go split screen in shows like 24. I get totally wrapped up in the suspense and then they they split the screen and I go "oh ya, it's just a TV show."

The Han Solo scene really bugged me. Not just for trying to turn his tough smuggler image into an innocent pretty boy but also because its so ridiculous that anyone could miss at point blank range. It's all been said before but he messes up my favorite movie of all time and then moved on to desecrate it further with prequals that could have been better written by an average high school student.

And don't even get me started on Midochlorians!!! I remember actually saying out loud in the movie theater, "Oh for F sake!"

and that's my for the day.

\:\) Sorry to Eric if I was being a bit of an excitable boy (that Warren Zevon album came out the month I was born, if we want to pretend that means anything). I get passionate about odd things.
