You know who you are... Be safe guys! Get ready!

I don't think I've ever seen the National Weather Service describe a storm as "epic".

"...AN EPIC AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS WINTER STORM TODAY THROUGH
WEDNESDAY..."

Central Iowa/Northern Illinois...

10-14 inches of snow, 50 mph winds, 15-18 foot drifts, 10-20 below zero (F) wind chills. Batten down the hatches!

I'm just far south enough to miss most of it. This time....

Someone's been playing WoW.

Here's what we have in the Maryland/Virgina area:

RAIN AND FREEZING RAIN IS EXPECTED AFTER SUNSET. TEMPERATURES AT THE SURFACE ARE EXPECTED TO HOVER AT OR BELOW FREEZING FOR MUCH OF THE OVERNIGHT...WITH ANY RAIN FALLING FREEZING ON CONTACT.

Hey could you guys keep your crappy weather over there and stop letting it bleed over to us.

Wait a minute they cancelled last nights mission due to weather and I got to go home early . . . never mind.
Posted By: tomtuttle Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/08/09 06:48 PM
Hey! We had that wind two days ago! Whaddya know.

Clear and unseasonably cold here. I'm sure the novelty will wear off and we'll be back to overcast, raining and 45F in no time.

Be safe.

We already have about 5" on the ground, suppose to get 12-15" by tomorrow AM.....4x4 punch it......

"10-14 inches of snow, 50 mph winds, 15-18 foot drifts, 10-20 below zero (F) wind chills. Batten down the hatches"

Somebody care to tell me what is this "snow" you speak of?

Got me.
Posted By: jakewash Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/08/09 10:06 PM
We just had a few days of -28C, snow, high winds, I believe this is the same storm hitting down there right now as it tracked that way. We are at -14 right now and it feels warm!!
Posted By: Wid Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/08/09 10:16 PM

Looks like most of what we will get is rain, snow, ice mix. Tomorrow it's going to get down to 6° with 50 mph winds, burrrrrrrr.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/08/09 10:26 PM
We're supposed to get a bit of that tonight, too. I'm getting out my speed skates for tomorrow's commute...
Posted By: merchman Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/08/09 10:38 PM
We've got a couple inches of snow on the ground now. Supposed to get about 10 to 14 inches when it's done tomorrow. \:\( Then it looks like major wind and turning very cold. Already a few accidents as the roads are really slick. I got the snowblowers and my 4 wheel drive ready to go! \:\)
Posted By: SirQuack Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/09/09 12:44 AM
Well, just got home after trying to avoid idiot drivers that have no business living in Iowa. My 145ft driveway is completely drifted in, bring on the 15". Will have to hook up the blade later and push out the driveway...
Posted By: SirQuack Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/09/09 12:42 PM
Well no work for me today, we got 15+ inches and still falling, with 30+ winds, can't see my neighbors house. The road through our association, and my 150ft drive are completely drifted in with 4ft+ drifts. I attempted last night to make one run with my plow down the driveway, but got stuck twice even in 4wheel drive mode. Haven't seen a storm like this for a long time...

Still have a few left, do you? I thought maybe they were all down my way this time of the year. ;\)
Posted By: SirQuack Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/09/09 12:53 PM
ha ha, yeah it is bad enough they can't drive when conditions are good. \:\)
Posted By: RickF Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/09/09 01:02 PM
I hear ya, I deal with 'em on a daily basis.

On another note, Randy I'm very disappointed with you right now ... 15 inches of snow (whatever that is) and you can't make it to work? What a slacker.

\:D
Posted By: SirQuack Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/09/09 01:06 PM
I need to take a picture. My plow only pushes (doesn't angle). I don't have anywhere to push the snow anymore. \:\) Boy, the wind is a howling out there, brrrrrrrrrrr.

I'm glad Team Iowa is surviving!!

Enjoy the snow day. ;\)

And yes Randy, we need pix. Especially for our members that live in snowless areas. We must remind them why we live in the midwest. ;\)
Posted By: SirQuack Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/09/09 03:38 PM
Yep, the empty cans with string still give me almost 1.5mbps speed. I will work on pics...
Posted By: Ascension Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/09/09 04:32 PM
We only got about 2-3 inches of snow where I live, but I sympathize for sirquack. Last year in March I had 18" of snow and didn't leave the house for 3 days. Lots of video games I got caught up on!
Posted By: Wid Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/09/09 04:48 PM
Sure hope you're doing well out there Randy. We got lucky so far, no measurable snow. We had a lot of rain and now the wind is really blowing strong. Winds are gusting over 40 mph and windchill is down to around 6°.
Posted By: SirQuack Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/09/09 05:33 PM
Dang, I will trade you...We have the same winds, that are making white out conditions. Can't see the end of my yard right now...

Six inches of snow and high winds yesterday, the schools have been closed for two days and we are expecting more weather over the next few days.
So I guess the kids will be off for a bit, just the sight of snow closes the schools here, what a bunch of wussies we are in Calif, there were four accidents when I drove the five miles to pick up the kids from school on Monday when the storm hit again late, unbelievable.
Posted By: jakewash Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/09/09 07:00 PM
You guys are not equipped to handle snow, it is best if things do shut down.
Posted By: Adrian Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/09/09 07:13 PM
It's been a rather strange day so far. Overnight we had high winds, then early this morning we got about 4" of very wet, heavy, slushy snow before the temperature went up, then it turned to rain for a couple of hours which got rid of a lot of the snow.
Posted By: merchman Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/09/09 08:00 PM
We got about 14 inches here. Now more blowing and drifting is taking place. Supposed to get below zero the next couple nights. Glad I could get things cleaned up decent today, as work was called off. I think the snowblowing was worse than being at work though. \:\(
Posted By: Adrian Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/09/09 08:08 PM
Ed, sounds like you need to make yourself a nice Hot Toddy, throw on some Pink Floyd on your Axioms, and relax..... \:\)

Gad, for once a blizzard is actually missing Cleveland. Not a flake on my back yard, so far. Temps are dropping, it has been windy, and tomorrow we're expecting some lake effect snow from East of Cleveland on up the Lake Erie coastline to Buffalo. I'm on the West side of Cleveland.

Hang in there all you mid-westerners.
Posted By: Murph Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/10/09 12:40 PM
In an odd turn of weather trends, I can still see portions of grass after a light snowfall last night and today is warm enough to melt it away. This time last year we had some big drifts on our lawn. The North is the new South. Err, well at least the new middle.
Posted By: SirQuack Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/10/09 02:11 PM
finally got plowed out late last night and made it to work today. Counted 10 cars in the ditch from our road to the city limits. -6degF right now, glad the wind finally calmed down, it was -30 below wind chills when I was plowing with the 40mph gusts.

I just got back from Ottawa, first by flying to Montreal, forced to stay overnight b/c of the storm, then into Toronto this morning and finally back to Winnipeg today.
Aside from the three idiot cabbies (1 in Ottawa, 2 in Montreal), an Air Canada hotel voucher for a hotel that apparently doesn't exist and finding that out after driving around with idiot cabbie #2 for an hour until 10:30 at night, followed by a 5:30am flight that was missed because the Montreal airport doesn't have departure screens in the gate area but Air Canada has two departures to Toronto 10 minutes apart but at gates on completely opposite sides of the terminal, and having aisle seats for all but the last leg which finally had in-seat video entertainment but only my unit wasn't working...

You know, after the second cab ride, the Steve Martin and John Candy movie Plains, Trains and Automobiles was firmly entrenched in my head.

I don't miss business travel at all.

I gotta rent that movie again. One of the better comedies out there IMO.
Posted By: Murph Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/11/09 01:44 PM
Ahhh, Air Canada.

If I could do a doctorate program in psychology, my thesis would be a study of the stress effects on consumers caused by exceptionally rotten customer service with Air Canada as my main focus.
Posted By: Ken.C Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/11/09 05:11 PM
Just substitute "Air Canada" with most North America based airlines, and you'd be set. At least if you're not flying first or business class.
Posted By: Murph Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/11/09 07:56 PM
Actually, I will give credit where credit is due and say that I find traveling with it's two main Canadian competitors, "Westjet" and more recently "Porter Airlines" is a pleasure. They go out of their way to give you a pleasant experience because they know that it is their biggest differentiating factor from the much larger option with a more more robust flight schedule.

Dan, good to hear from you. So, is Deerfield Beach where you're working?

Indeed it is. I'll post a thread soon about my new apartment and axiom setup like i did every college year (mostly).

Haven't gotten the surrounds mounted yet, but almost there :-)

So how did you guys fair out. Lets hear the final snow tally ?
Posted By: Adrian Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/15/09 05:45 PM
Southern Ont all the way up to Barrie got about 4-5", but not too far North of Barrie, say Orillia and North( Hunsville/Gravenhurst and Axiomland) got hammered 3 to 4ft!! must have been the storm picked up more ammo when it crossed Lk. Superior and Georgian Bay.
Posted By: bridgman Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/15/09 05:58 PM
My guess is that the Axiom buildings look like snowy bumps in a snowy field right now. AFAIK they're right in the snow zone.

Deerfield Beach huh? Come back in August and September and tell everybody back home how well you're enjoying the beautiful weather down here ... you'll only have a couple of more months of it left after that. \:D

Weather is odd on Islands. I took yesterday afternoon off to go pick up my new truck. It was snowing here in PEI with drifting, icy roads, etc. We crossed the Confederation bridge and just in that 8 miles, the weather turned almost sunny and the hour long drive in New Brunswick was like summer road traveling all the way.

Later that night we returned back to PEI and as soon as we crossed the bridge, we were in high winds, icy roads and near white out conditions again. Nothing compared to your blizzard of course but our isolated weather systems always amuse me.
Posted By: jakewash Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/18/09 04:44 PM
We get that type of weather out here. On Monday I was able to see the wall of change in front of me when I was driving back from my parents which is north of Red Deer. The temperature was -19C on one side of the wall and once I passed through it the mirrors on the car fogged up and the interior of the car suddenly became warm and humid. I thought the heater core had blown up. I looked at the temperature reading, it had gone up to -2 in an instant, very interesting to see.

Murph, it's just over a mile from the mainland to the island where we live and on our cold mornings there is typically a 12-15* temperature difference from the island to the mainland ... I've always been intrigued at just how fast the temperature drops upon reaching the mainland from the island. We're not talking *your* kind of cold weather though, our coldest mornings will be in the lower 40s or maybe skirt the upper 30s on occasion.
Posted By: Argon Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/18/09 05:47 PM
YAHOOOO! It is snowing here right now. I know this is foreign to you foreign Canadian guys (or anyone north of the Mason-Dixon line) but the minute it starts snowing here in Piedmont North Carolina, everything stops. That means I can leave work early. The grocery stores sold out of bread, eggs, milk and beer last night.
Posted By: RickF Re: Midwest Axiom members - blizzard! - 12/18/09 06:43 PM
We have a Mexican fella that works with us who lived in North Carolina at one time, cracks me up every time I hear him say "Norte Caroleenia".

After the monsoons quit we're supposed to get some cooler weather for the weekend, forecast are in the mid->upper 40s for the lows ... seems like I saw something like a high of 68 or so for Monday or Tuesday, s'bout time!

I just got down in September...it got really hot at times. Last summer I interned down in Florida, same spot. Summers were pretty hot!

Yup. Vero Beach isn't that far, hmm. Nice to know an axiomite also is down in FL.

And today in chicagoland "we" just had 3-4 inches of snow. Had to shovel it. Actually enjoyed it. Mostly because I knew there was some Bells Best Brown Ale waiting for me inside :-)
