I have been formating my 1.5 terabyte external HD on Fat32 so I can use with my PS3. Can you believe it is taking more than 20 hours already? So long time....
Does Fat32 even support drives that big?
i guess he will find out in 20 hrs
Not that big, i forgot that windows does not accept hd bigger than 1 gb if I am not mistaken. You can partition using CMD prompt command. If you use windows the you cannot format hd bigger than 32 GB. There are other options using other programs though.
Windows will do just fine with >1TB hard drives--as long as they're formatted NTFS and using a reasonably modern version of Windows.
EDIT: Ah, I see that FAT32 will also go up to 2 TB. Go fig.
I am using swissknife what accepts bigger drives. The thing is that PS3 only reads Fat32 hard drives. If I am not mistaken.
OK, good you're using Swissknife. The cmd format command will also fail at the 32 GB mark. But if you're not doing a quick format it'll take hours before it stops with an error.
My biggest FAT32 drive is 500 GB. You've got a new record.
Assuming it ever finishes.
I just found out a better program. People usually complaint about the swissknife coz it crashes sometimes, I just used EASEUS partition manager and finished formating in 1 minute the 1.5 terabyte and the external HD is already in use on my ps3.
Nice!
I think the only limitation for FAT32 is that any 1 particular file can not be greater than 4GB. You just have to be careful when encoding movies.
Murph is from PEI... everything seems double their normal size by comparisons...
AVI files are limited to 2GB, no matter where they are stored, because of the indexing system* used within the file. But files without their own internal limits (like MPEG) can indeed go up to 4GB on FAT32 file systems.
*AVI uses a 32-bit, signed integer for it's index offset. By using unsigned, 32-bits covers 4GB of address space.
