The Apple Iscrew © ™
It seems the most recent release of the Iphone (and Ipad??) are secured with a proprietary screw and Apple will only sell you the driver if you are Apple certified.
So, have you been Iscrewed?
This story was blown way out of proportion. Apple has had the "pentalobe" screw on their laptop computers for a while now. Where was the outrage then? The screwdrivers needed to remove them
are not difficult to find, either.
Of course it was blown out of proportion. It was, after all, a handy way for iFixit to sell screwdrivers.
Do you often have to disassemble your iPhone? I grant that it's nice to be able to do it, but you CAN. If you buy this handy part from ifixit, and while you're here, you might as well buy a battery too...
I'm not saying that Apple's completely free from fault here (lord knows, they're not), but iFixit's not just doing this to be cool, either.
I'm surprised Wheelz hasn't told Apple to go screw themselves.
HA!
Wait, how did I get involved?
Cam, you musta missed it when we voted you "Board Curmudgeon."
Apparently.......And how did you vote?
If not to keep you out and the apple service guys profitable, what is the motive for commissioning a proprietary screw?
It's to keep you out. It could be (if you look at it in the very, very best possible light), it's to keep you out so you can't screw up the hardware and then try to get it repaired when you're not eligible.

You have answered your question.
(if you look at it in the very, very best possible light)
Is that realistic?
99% of the time companies do stuff like this, it is to protect profit.
No, it is to maximize profit above all else.
Most of the reason I posted this is that I thought it was very funny that it was a proprietary screw because it is so very symbolic, particularly if you put an i in front.
Which could also be the motive in reducing service on ineligible devices.

Its typical of anything Apple. No surprises here. However, it is not the first proprietary screw, but its function is crap.
This is a post. This is only a post. Please do not be concerned. If this had been an actual post, your response may have been different.
Thank you.
Oh oh. Cats took over the internet connection again...

It could be, though I am skeptical. I still think its a great name to trademark.
I would think a small Torx bit would work on those, depending on how tight they are.
I believe Ifixit commissioned their own version of the screwdriver and sell it for around $5.
My reply is- why would you buy anything CrApple in the first place
?
