My wife may have destroyed her iPad 1. Sooooo, as per the subject. I'm not throwing in any self thoughts to keep it neutral to start.

My boss really likes his Galaxy Tab now that the screen bubbling issue has been resolved. He got one of the earlier models that had an issue where the top layer of glass would slightly delaminate from the lower layer if the screen got too hot, leaving a visible moire/bubble pattern on the screen.

I respect my boss, but I like the i-side of things.
There are plenty of articles like these below that go into a lot detail comparing these specific models. For the most part very similar.

http://deviceguru.com/galaxy-tab-10-1-vs-ipad2-smackdown/

If you plan to use an type of earbuds or low impedance full sized headphones with the iPad, it is known to have an output impedance that is a bit on the high side @4.4 ohms.
I have an (original) Motorola Droid that I've been using for at least a couple years.

My wife has an iPad 1. I have an iPad 2.

I haven't played around much with Android Tablets.

From my experience, I can't imagine forsaking my iPad. That thing changed my whole outlook on Apple. Android just doesn't seem to deliver what I want with the same ease and elegance that the iPad does.

If Mrs. Murphy LIKED her iPad, I'd be really effing sure what I was getting into by asking her to switch to an Android Tablet. What's your margin, there?

I'm thinking the upcoming Kindle Fire will satisfy my own tablet needs. Of course, my tablet needs are minor, and I already use Amazon.com A LOT. I'm hoping it's tied really well into the cloud storage. I just wish they supported FLAC for the music storage. But yeah, it seems well-designed and at the right price point for me right now. I'd consider a higher-end one if they offered that, though!

I wasn't going to chime in until the post was quiet but I want to assure you Tom that I am smart enough to claim no controlling interest in this potential switch. She saw a Galaxy Tab at work and thought it "looked nicer"

The most I will get involved in her decision is to take her to Future Shop and encourage her to play with both to see which she finds more intuitive. This may be unfair to the Tab, considering she is already familiar with the iPad interface but although I promised her she could decide for herself, I want her to at least base it on something more than "looks nicer".

You have to remember, her first comment/question when she opened her gift of the original iPad was "Did it come with a nice bag". By bag she meant case..... I think.
It is no secret that I am not an Apple fanboy, but if your wife had an iPad, it would probably the easiest transition for her to go to an iPad 2, even if it isn't the greatest hardware machine, and one could argue that the Galaxy Tab interface is just as good. Different (IE: "not Apple") doesn't mean that it is bad. Heck, my wife uses an iPad 2 at work, but has an Android tablet at home that she loves. She actually prefers the Android tablet since she has an Android phone, so apps are the same.

Of course, with Android, you aren't stuck with the stupid Apple iStore or whatever. I hate how much Apple software is always running in the background on my computer just for the times that my kids happen to plug in their iPods.

But again, ease of transition for her would probably be the iPad 2.

Have you measured the impact these three processes have on your computer when iTunes isn't running or when no Apple device is connected?
If your wife does a lot of web browsing on flash based websites that in and of itself could be enough to make the switch.

For the most part you are comparing two of the most similar tablets on the market out there. With the exception of iOS vs Andriod, flash etc. I find that the Samsung galaxy is actually better looking and sleeker than the iPad 2. It's also a bit thinner and lighter. I hate the proprietary connections on both. Your wife probably doesn't care.
Oh, Peter, you and your "measure".

iPad 2 is meaningfully smaller than the first generation, which might help with the "looks nicer" part.

I got this leather Yoobao case and I love it. Very high quality leather and stitching, and it adds virtually no weight or dimension to the device.

First I get carried away with "zeros," and now you're goin' all fractal on us. Boy, would my work day be easier if I could veneer something and have it add virtually no dimension. How "virtual" we talkin'?

Gee, Mrs, Jones. I'm sorry for that gap there, but, afterall, it IS virtual.

What's next, "Einstein Express: when it absolutley positively has to get there yesterday?"
If you're household is already committed to the iTunes ecosystem, iPad 2 is the logical choice, especially if you have quite a few purchases.

I'm pretty committed to the Apple ecosystem w/ several Macs at home, work, iphone 3g/4 and iPad 2. However, since I love 'toys' I'm on the pre-order w/ the Kindle Fire. For the price of 2, you still couldn't afford an iPad. We have a Kindle 2 and love it. I've used it for the daily local paper, the kids use it for books and comics, the wife uses it, etc. It's great for travel and IMHO, the iPad 2 doesn't compare as strictly a reading device. That being said, it would be nice to have a few more features, like color, to step up the Kindle. I don't need another iPad but at $200, the Fire seems like a fairly decent option. It runs Android and will have a lot of Amazon content there, which works out well since we're Amazon Prime subscribers.
Bob, you KNOW I'm not a scientist.

Apologies for the imprecise language.

Beerology is a perfectly valid science!

The only derogatory terms were describing me. LOL.

As for the apps, I don't care if they are just sitting idle, it is what they are sitting idle waiting for... For someone to plug in their Apple product and then launch the stinking iTunes store. Needless to say, I've disabled the launching of anything, but those little programs are still sitting.... waiting... stalking.... sending my biometrics back to Apple HQ... taking random DNA samples through my mouse and keyboard... MAKING A CLONE OF ME AS WE SPEAK!!! AAAARRAARHRHHRHGGGG!
.
.
Oh Crap! What if I am the clone.

Seriously though, I try to keep my system from getting bogged down by "helper" apps regardless of who they are from or what hardware they are there for.

So, does anyone know if there is a test to find out if I am a clone? Maybe some sort of eye test like in the Sixth Day movie...

#1. I find, like Murph referenced earlier, that bran often helps. And just stop having that many "apps" before dinner. Calling them "helper" apps doesn't change anything.

#2. If there is a clone test, you can bet your 'a' that either Tony Fauci or Craig Vetner already have dib$ on it.
I should pick up some FiberOne or something I guess. LOL Thanks for all the "tips" guys! smirk
I have been playing around getting to know a Sammy 10.1 for about a week now. Setting it up for my mom. Stellar device! The only issue I have ran into so far is getting either of my pc's which run xp and vista to recognize the tablet. On the tablet it will still show it is connected and that the battery is charging but the computer doesn't show the device. I think I might have to install the Samsung Kies program cry eek because downloading the driver alone didn't work. It also kills me that I have to buy a USB adapter so she can use SD cards with it. An option which should have been included on this device and would have not compromised the slick form factor. My only real issue with this device is the non-friendly and lack of connectivity out of the box.

I have been also reading up on the "oil slick" called newton rings on some of the tablets. It is due to insufficient glue adhesion between the screens. A manufacturing fault. The good thing is this problems occurs in the first few weeks of operation so you can just return it for a full refund. Shouldn't be a problem any more if you buy one now.

If you haven't purchased either one yet, Future Shop now sells the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 16GB for $399.99...unbelievable bargain.

Thanks for remembering this post when you saw a sale.

I never did report back on this. On whim, I searched some Youtube videos and found one showing how to pry open the screen bezel and once it was partially open, it showed what restraining bars and such had to be flipped and cables removed to fully open it. I can't be sure but the digitizer cable seemed loose when when I removed it. Sure enough, when I was done being curious and put it all back together, it worked!

For once, the laws of my last name were on vacation.
It's not a sale, these are the current MSRP ($CAN) of these two devices.

Samsung 10.1 16 GB wifi - $399.99
Apple iPad 2 16 GB wifi - $519.99
Samsung 10.1 32 GB wifi - $499.99
Apple iPad 2 32 GB wifi- - $619.99
Samsung 10.1 4G - $649.99
Apple iPad 2 3G - $649.99

You would think with the sweatshops in China these are manufactured in, the iPads would be cheaper wink.

i wouldnt get an IPad 2, wait for the Ipad 3... It should be out in the next couple months, and will have the retna display.. 2X the resolution of the ipad 1 and 2.... it will also have the A6 processor or an A5X as the rumors are saying.. instead of the A5... Don't buy an Apple product right before they release the next version, you will pay the same price for "old" technology, as their price point always stays pretty constant they just add a bunch more crap into the new version at the same price. The ipad 3 is also rumored to have an 8mega pixel camera as well....

http://www.macrumors.com/

A lot of the current topics relate to the ipad 3 since it is seculated to be released in the next month or so....

How immediately does she want a replacement, if she can wait a month or 2, i would say ipad 3, if she has to have one by the end of the week (or so), then i guess ipad 2 is the only "Apple" option.
Yeah, but a new Apple generation also means closeout/refurb deals on the last generation.

I really like my iPad2.

My son just ordered an HTC Evo View, which looks like a lot of technology for the $. I'm eager to see how that works. It's Gingerbread, not ICS.

Julie has gotten excellent service from her iPad (original) which is obviously a little clunky form-factor wise, now. She ALSO likes having an e-ink Nook. It seems like the (hacked?) Nook Tablet or Amazon Fire are pretty nice devices for the money.
That's one of the problems with Apple's short life cycles of it's different versions of the same product.
Posted By: Murph Re: IPad 2 vs. Galaxy Tab 10.1 ----- Fight!!! - 02/21/12 06:54 PM
Dakkon, as per my last post, the old one is working again so we no longer need a replacement. Thanks for the advice though.

Yep - getting an iPad3 on it's release day. The wife has a Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and we both love it, but I want the iPad3.

Tom, your opportunity for Julie appears to be sell the 1 and get the 3. Oh yeah - I love spending your money!
Nook for REALLY cheap today...

I think there are going to be some nice Tegra3 (quad core with real gaming capabilities) ICS tablets coming out this summer. Tablet tech is moving along as a very fast pace so it's no surprise anything you buy today will be out of date 12 months later.

Android 5.0 coming this summer?

Probably

But I would speculate that Android 5 will replace ChromeOS and not be for phones or tablets. Maybe Android 6 will master everything! crazy

You will probably know this. I'm looking to print from the tablet to home desktop printer. It's not a wifi printer. Just wondering what are the best apps in the Android Market for this setup.

What printer do you have, BJ?
Check out Google Cloud Print.
HP Photosmart
Cloud Print will probably work. I think HP Photosmart models are compatible.
Thanks!
My pleasure. You do need to have a wired printer...
Posted By: INANE Re: IPad 2 vs. Galaxy Tab 10.1 ----- Fight!!! - 02/28/12 05:19 AM
Cloud print works great for me (seldom use it thou). It doesn't matter how your printer interfaces with your computer.... if you use Chrome on your PC where the printer driver is installed it just works but you have to be logged into the computer for the Chrome background print service to run.

Some newer (network) printers have Cloud Print built into them to directly communicate with the "Cloud" so you dont have to have your desktop PC on.
