Just had our second earthquake in less than 24 hours that was EASILY felt and heard. Shook the whole house. I slept through the 4.7 last night, had a 5.2 just now. Epicenter was about 60 miles away.

There shouldn't be earthquakes in Oklahoma, WTF!

lol crazy... maybe global warming caused it

;-)

5.2? That's cute. wink

We'd freak out in Cali when it gets windy.

Second strongest in history for Oklahoma.
Posted By: terzaghi Re: Earthquake!!!! - 11/06/11 04:28 AM
Strongest was 5.5 in 1952. I've lived here for 28 years and never felt an earthquake until last year. Something funny is going on...

Revised to a 5.6. Woohoo, new state record!

like here, it could be the earth's crust still settling as a result of the melting ice at the end of the last glaciation; less weight on the crust makes it rebound to it's original state.

it's what's happening in my part of the world; with the last one, about 20 years ago) at around 6 (Richter scale).

just one day before that happened, i was telling my GF that it does not happen here. the next day she sees the vacuum cleaner walking past her and loud knocks on the door, and such.

when i was living in Iceland, i had the great pleasure of experiencing 2 strong earthquakes, one at 8.6 and another one at 9.4 - it was much better than what my sub can do and i enjoyed it a lot.

Don't know if you're serious or not, Dave, but Oklahoma has lots of fault lines (thought an article I read said there's few-if any-"plate boundaries", which apparently are the usual cause of tectonic plate shifts). Another possibly is increased oil and gas drilling; particularly fracking. Hydro fracking is big business in your state. Not only is it contaminating the fresh water aquifers used to supply drinking water, but the practice could very well set off tectonic activity. Yet another reason fracking should be shut down.

J.B., I have to agree with you. Although for some they can be frightening, and we can't forget the possible destructive force, but experiencing an earthquake is quite exhilarating. And humbling too.

They're pretty commonplace where I live (Alaska), but I can't say I enjoy them. It's just not natural for the ground to move. Some of my coworkers lived through, and remember the earthquake of 64 (9.2 mag). They laugh at the 'little' 6er's and 7er's.

There shouldn't be a pro basketball team in Oklahoma, either.

Just sayin'

I've heard of earthquakes here recently, but I haven't felt them myself. I'm not in tune with Nature, I suppose. I'm really going to have to rely on what I see the wildlife doing.

Lots of earthquakes in OK, just usually in in 2.0-3.0 range and can't feel them.

Glad to not hear that you were hurt or had damage. I've always been curious to feel a real earthquake but I'd probably change my toon if it happened. Probably have to change my pants too.

Was kind of fun but a little odd feeling for the first or second time. Something is definitely going on. Typicallh there are 50+ earthquakes each year in Oklahoma but last year they recorded for 1000.

Hey, you import the basketball team and then help break the NBA, you get some of our seismic activity. That's part of the deal.

grin

You know I'm just yanking your chain, right? Honestly, I was indifferent to the NBA game even before Howard Schultz and Clay Bennett conspired.

Congrats on the overwhelming season by the Cowboys, btw. You must be very excited. Perhaps they are the cause (or result) of the quakes?
Posted By: terzaghi Re: Earthquake!!!! - 11/07/11 11:37 PM
Yeah I'm excited to see what happens. I'm really hoping the cowboys can go 12-0

#2 in the polls and in the ranking that matters, the BCS. Congrats! Hope you don't get the Axiom Board Jinx.
