I have a Denon receiver (AVR 3302) and I use the receiver as both an audio and video switcher for convenience.

I am having trouble with the volume setting. Specifically, when the receiver is set to DVD the volume is much louder than when it is set to TV/Cable. The result is that whenever I change from TV to DVD (and forget to adjust the volume down significantly), the volume spikes up and wakes up the whole house. Also, the TV level is low enough that on some program material it is difficult to hear the dialogue. Any ideas?

if you have a cable box, be sure its volume is set to max. when one has more that one remote, sometimes others may turn down the box volume at my house too.

thanks for the reply - i'll try it tonight. i didn't think the cable box volume setting would affect the audio signal being sent to the receiver.

Sure it would. How else do you think you'd control the volume through the cable box itself?
