yikes! lol.

I have only been to one concert, was really good though, in a hotel ballroom, not a ton of people, seats etc. Sound was good too

Band was Cecilio & Kapono they are a local group but you might have heard of them, they have quite a few good songs.
Posted By: Ajax Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/14/04 02:31 AM
Holy Smokes! They go back a long way (But then, so do I ). I Remember playing their stuff when I was a disc jockey 30 years ago. I just checked and I have their first two albums, "Cecelio & Kapono," 1974, and "Elua," 1975. On vinyl, of course.
Posted By: tinfoilhat Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/14/04 02:40 AM
I'm a bit older so...

The Who
Stevie Wonder
Cat Stevens
Yes
Joni Mitchell
Andres Segovia
Nigel Kennedy
Travis
Yes
Genesis
Eurythmics
Bowie
The Tubes
Peter Gabriel
Supertramp
ZZ Top
Atlanta Rythm Section
KD Lang

I'm forgetting a bunch. I used to do a lot of camera work, so I was on stage with ZZ Top and Atlanta Rythm Section. The guitarist for ARS was so huge that his fingers looked like sausages. I don't know how he could could play only one note at a time, but his fingers were lightning. Strangest and one of the most impressive things I've ever seen.
Andres Segovia was about 80 when I saw him. He entered from stage left and it took about a full minute for him to just make it to his stool. As soon as he touched his guitar the years vanished and when he played it was like watching a god. For all the time we spend listening to our systems it is important to remember that the real magic is live.

That list is pretty huge, Monstermile - DO you keep a tally going?

I was in a fraternity in College taht was pretty into having bands. So, about 3 times every two months, we'd get live acts into the house - varying from glorified garage bands (my own - I sing and play guitar) to bands like Fighting Gravity, Guster, Kid Rock (before he was known as Kid Rock - it was wierd, he had this little person with him on stage...little did we know this white guy woudl become so huge). It was a really great time. Huge sound from a live band is really incomparable.
Here are some highlights:

Rolling Stones
Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin (Plant/Page) 7th Row!
Clapton (blue tour)
Aerosmith (Steven Tyler has more energy than any performer I've ever seen!)
Dave Matthews countless times. Went to his Second cd release party (attended school in Charlottesville, where he had his roots - when he was still abig nobody!)
Soundgarden
Chili Peppers
Guns n. Roses/Mettalica
Counting Crows
David Gray - front row - one of teh best shows I've ever seen.

Well, lesse--

Metallica-4x (best the first time - tour Cunning Stunts came from)
With Metallica:
Korn-2x (not by choice-they sucked.)
System of a Down (see above)
Mudvayne (bad sound system, couldn't tell whether they sucked or not)
Powerman 5000 (sucked)
Kid Rock (surprisingly entertaining)
Limp Bizkit (sucky suck suck suck suck, bunch o' jerks)
Linkin Park (vaguely ok)
Jerry Cantrell (good, but his keyboardist was really, really drunk or something-kept throwing the keyboard around the stage.)
Days of the New (near the end of their careers. They were better on the albums.)

Sting - Fantastico!
K. D. Lang opened for him. Not exactly memorable.
Rush - amazing!
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - also amazing!
Dave Brubeck 2x (need I say more?)
Sonos Handbell Ensemble 2x (see them if you can; great stuff)
Blues Traveler - pretty good.
Michael Franti & Spearhead opened for BT. (Oh god, why won't he stop playing?! I swear, he played longer than Blues Traveler. Oh, the humanity!)
Billy Idol (great show. He threw a mike into the crowd and kicked over a box fan! Ah, that 80s anger!)
Sweet Honey in the Rock - 2x. Sublime.
Crosby Stills Nash and Young- great show. Young dominated a bit much, but...
Simon and Garfunkle. Yes, they still can't stand each other. Other than that, pretty good show.

That covers it give or take...

Also
Herbie Hancock and Bobby Hutcherson - 4th row. Fantastic show. A lot of fun to watch.

Hmm...

David Lee Roth 11/02/86

David Lee Roth ??? (The A Little Ain't Enough tour)
Van Hagar 10/8/91
Van Hagar 4/4/95 (free tix from Eddie himself!)
Mr. Big 7/29/92 (only to see Billy on the bass)
Barry Manilow (again, free, but surprisingly a fun show)
Dirty Dozen Brass Band 1/29/99
Steve Roach (in a tiny place in Santa Monica, half the room was asleep by the time he was done. Pretty amazing!)
Prince (The "symbol album" tour - by far the best show I've ever seen!)
Prince 3/28/04
Ozzy Osbourne 7/13/92
Fleetwood Mac 10/31/87
Fleetwood Mac 11/11/90
Kenny Rogers 4/15/88
LA Philharmonic x3
Bob Dylan/Paul Simon 6/22/99 (Bob sucked, Paul was awesome)

Margaret Cho x4
David Copperfield (very impressive!)

wow...that's more than I thought.

All the shows with dates, I still have the ticket stubs for.

Posted By: AdamP88 Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/14/04 06:27 AM
Boy do I need to go to more concerts!

U2 (3x - all incredible)
Béla Fleck & The Flecktones (the most fun concert I've been to)
Metallica - nice show, but the new songs paled live
Mudvayne (same concert as Ken - they sucked big time, and it wasn't just the sound system)
Linkin Park - ditto the vaguely ok
Limp Bizkit - I can't believe some of my money went to these guys
Cake - was alright, the singer seemed a little arrogant

And some barefoot Brazilian multi-instrumentalist new age jazz musician who was a little too new-agey (a quote: "you know, we're all like hair, growing in different directions" ). Peter saw her too, but apparently didn't think she counted.
Posted By: player8 Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/14/04 06:58 AM
I'm young and poor so I've only seen:

Jack Johnson
Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals
Hed P.E.
Saliva
Mudvayne
Breaking Benjamin
Systematic

Monstermile, I didn't see one of the best bands of all time on your list, Queen!

And what was your favorite concert? My dad constantly raves about the Kiss concerts and how todays acts suck by comparison...
Wow, I feel very sheltered

Rolling Stones
U2
Fun Loving Criminals
Alanis Morisette (before you start laughing it was for OLP)
Our Lady Peace 2x
Big Wreck 3x
Moist
The Watchmen
Pearl Jam (great show despite Eddie's political rantings)
GOB
The Headstones
Nickleback (wish I hadn't wasted the money)
Default (ditto Nickleback comments)
The Tea Party
The Smashing Pumpkins
The Tragically Hip (any Canucks out there that haven't seen them???)

There's plenty of others in here I'm forgetting. Saturday night I'm going to check out the Pixies, and this is probably as excited as I've been to see a concert in a while.

Bela Fleck is pretty awesome live, isn't he? Very polished. I saw him before I became a fan. I never thought that music without words could have such popular appeal!

Sting was great - but his show was short.

You know what shows I really loved? The Lillith Fair shows were awesome! Lesbians a-plenty, a few straight chicks and me and my buddy - what can I say, I like chick rock! Those were fun shows. And Sarah Maclachlan has to be one of the best live performers I have ever seen. (Forgot about this tour)

Don't forget Wu Tang Clan & Rage Against athe Machine. Talk abotu angry white kids and angry black kids mixing for some good old mosh-pit fun. It was a surreal experience to say teh least.

Oh yeah...
Eagles (last year) Much better in concert than on the albums. Or maybe it was sitting through 3 hours of it that finally made me like them sort of.

As for shows, not concerts (since Spiff opened that up) in Vegas last year, I saw
Blue Man Group-great show. Hard to describe.
Mystere (fantastic show)
O (another fantastic show, but Mystere was better)
Zumanity (good show, but it needs more work to get anywhere near the level of the other three)

Are you serious, BigJohn, or is sarcasm hard to read?

Come on, dude. While you are a sizeable gentleman, I would caution you about tempering that excitement arnoud your friends -especially in texas. I hear they don't take too kindly to that kidn of talk down there....
Posted By: bigjohn Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/14/04 09:17 PM
well, it was sarcastic, sort of..

i wasnt too excited about it when my wife said she had bought the tickets, not to mention they were $40 bucks a seat. but, i have started thinking it might be pretty cool.. i always marvel at the things they can do on ice skates when watching on TV, well now i can see it for myself, live.

all my friends already call me a pinko-commi liberal fruitcake.. they are all republicans, and i am not a demo, but certainly not a republican. i guess cause i like art, photography, playing guitar, writing songs, and other forms of self expression; it wierds them out.. but oh well, we still play poker and drink beer together, so its all good.

no hijack, back to the concerts!!!

bigjohn
Sorry - BigJohn. I, too, was mostly kidding.

I've never been to an ice show - but you're probably right. It would be amazing to see people doing really unbelievable (death defying?) maneuvers on ice with your own eyes. I'm sure that the experience is more than I would expect.

Back on topic - sorry.
Posted By: bigjohn Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/14/04 09:28 PM
pickard, by looking at your list, i would say we have about the same taste in music.

no "sorry" needed. its just too easy to get the reputation of a 'hijacker' around here. i dont want to be a part of your dastredly deeds..

HEY everyone, capt pickard wants to know everyones favorite color??? (HA, they will never know it was me)

Capn: It's not that I really keep an actual tally. I do have almost every stub from every concert I have been to. Someone asked me last year how many shows I have been to and while counting my stubs I decided to list all of the bands as well.

player8: Really hard to name a favorite out of all of them. But always tops on my list is my first. Iron Maiden on the Powerslave tour in 85. That was an incredible show and quite a show for my first one. Others top on my list are Pink Floyd on the Pulse tour, Metallica on the Justice tour and Disturbed on the Music as a Weapon II tour. Worst band I have ever seen is The Deftones. They sucked in a big way live. And I have seen Kiss three time with and two times w/o make-up. The best performance was on the Animalize tour. But my fave was the 96 reunion tour. That was a blast.

I do hope Linkin Park is better this summer than when the couple of people here saw them. I have tickets for them Korn and Snoop Dogg (ugh) this summer. Also going to check out Fuel and Octane this Saturday night.

A few I need to add to my list now that I remember:

Pearl Jam

I LOVE TODD SNIDER.. i think he is one of, if not THE best songwriter/story tellers out there right now. and his live show is just phenomanial.. the way he interacts with the crowd, and gets everyone involved in his show. definitely, in a category all his own. i have had the pleasure of seeing him live 3 times, and each was better than the last.

Oops, I forgot a couple

PJ Harvey - opened for U2 - bad sound system and the audience wasn't that into it, but she's a good performer
No Doubt (2x) - opened for U2 - fun show!
Posted By: Ken.C Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/15/04 08:05 PM
I ask you guys, what's with the opening bands getting crappy sound systems at big concerts? It's really annoying, even if I don't like the band.
Posted By: AdamP88 Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/16/04 06:18 AM
That's a good question. Maybe it's a function of how successful or "arrived" the band is. If you've hit mainstream, you get access to better sound, maybe?

Out of the opening bands for Metallica, only Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit had good sound (though it didn't really matter for Limp Bizkit). Not that good sound would've saved Mudvayne or whoever it was (Deftones?) we caught. The singer was terrible - He was wheezing his way through the actual singing so he could get to the screaming.

I wish PJ Harvey had better sound. I could barely understand a word she said and overall it was too muddy, so it was hard to get into it, but I could tell there was some good stuff in there and she was really trying to get through.

Kiss/WASP/Queensryche All three bands put on a great show. Had great seats. Everybody was unusually cool. Partied with some hotties during and after the concert. What a night. Ahh..the old days.

Worst Concert:
Motley Crue They sounded horrible. Surrounded by morons in the crowd. Several fights over the course of the show. Guy behind me kept falling forward on me in a drunken stupor. Eventually he barfed and some of it got on my pant leg; which in turn caused me to barf. During drive home, smell from pant leg caused me to gag/barf twice before I finally took pants off and threw out the car window. Just a really bad night all the way around.

Holy Crap!!

I left one off my list: Tower of Power (it was free)
Posted By: Ajax Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/19/04 12:45 PM
Ah! Another OLD guy. You mentioned some folks I hadn't thought about in 30 years. McKendree Spring? Nobody remembers McKendree Spring. Amazing. I've got several of their albums.

I'd a killed to go to a Stephane Grappelli concert. Wish I coulda heard Joe Venutti, too. My two favorite Jazz violinists.

Saw Jerry Jeff Walker at a roadhouse somewhere in CT. I don't remember where. In fact, I don't remember much about the 70s . The entire decade is just a Smokey haze.

What a fabulous list. Fun stuff!
Posted By: denver Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/19/04 01:49 PM
I sure can't remember them all, but I was at the very first U.S. show by Led Zeppelin, in Denver on 12/26/68 (I was 14), when they opened (without advance billing) for Spirit and Vanilla Fudge. They were awesome, and we eagerly awaited the release of their first album some weeks later. I just watched the Led Zep dvd on my system, and I recommend it to anyone who was ever a fan.

A few others that come quickly to mind:
Frank Zappa (couple times, including performing Joe's Garage in Berkeley - fantastic show)
Jimi Hendrix (Denver Pop Festival, 1969, last performance of Jimi Hendrix Experience)
Big Brother & Janis Joplin
Moody Blues
Jethro Tull
Johnny Winter
Iron Butterfly
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Joe Cocker
Three Dog Night
Zephyr
The Flock
Persuasions (acapella in a small club - terrific)
Big Head Todd & Monsters
Bela Fleck
Modern Jazz Quartet
Ahmad Jamal
Miles Davis
REM

Lots of others that I don't recall at the moment
Posted By: tcook4109 Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/19/04 02:46 PM
what a bunch of old guys...haha
My brain cells won't let me remember all of the concerts I've seen. I posted earlier, and did leave out Zappa, Santana, Vanilla Fudge, Ricky Scaggs, a bunch of 60's bands at Goose Lake Rock Festival in 1970.
I did find some interesting pictures I'll share...
The Who in 1968 or 9 at a small venue in Indiana
Roger:

Pete:

And some of Pink Floyd in 71. These are captured from 8mm flim, so they kinda suck, but I still wanted to share
Floyd:

Roger Waters:

Dave Gilmour:

hope these links work....

So I made the trek to Saskatoon on the weekend to see the Pixies, unbelievable show. Unfortunately they sold out in my backyard in 4 minutes so we had to make the road trip.

Now on a somewhat related topic, the concert was recorded by an outfit called Disclive. CDs of the show were available 10 minutes after the concert ended. I listened to it in the car on the way back yesterday (so no critical listen yet) but the recording seems to be of very high quality. I wish more bands did this (also a great way to avoid the bootlegging issue if it's of concern to them).

I just have to say that I am extremely jealous of anyone who saw Hendrix live. Man I wish I was older (or maybe not!).

I do believe that's the first time that I ever heard a story about a guy coming home from a concert with no pants saying he had a bad time.

bummer...
Posted By: Twirly22 Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/30/04 01:11 PM
I would trade every act I've seen (except Grateful Dead at the Fillmore East in 1971) for one Hendrix concert, especially Band of Gypsys New Year's Eve. BUT . . . I just scored two tickets to see Clapton in Albany in June!!
Posted By: eightmanvt Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/30/04 03:12 PM
Just to throw my 2 cents in since it's Friday, and I'm feeling unmotivated here at work. Some of you guys have AWESOME lists!!! I'm completely jealous. There really is nothing like a great live musical performance!! Here they come in random order as they occur to me....

VanHalen
Night Ranger
Dave Matthews
Chicago
REM
Skynrd!!!!!!! --> That's right Bren...and it was a fun show
Jars of Clay
Third Day
Def Leppard
Fighting Gravity -- that's for you Cap'n...seen them countless times!! You must be a VA boy too
Counting Crows
Arturo Sandoval -- was a fluke for me to end up at this one..but I enjoyed it
Radiohead
Tesla
Firehouse -- went to a strip club with these guys...hehe
Some celtic rock band whose name starts with a C..but I can't remember...they were actually very good...--excellent musicians
Shawn Lane

Geez...this is all I can think of...I must be forgetting some..(I hope!!) Pathetic!! So many bands I would love to see...sometimes it's hard to find others with similar tastes to go with. For instance...G3 was here not too long ago....with Vai, Satriani, and Malmsteen...but I couldn't find a single taker.

Eightmanvt

Yeah, Fighting Gravity was a great show... and yes, I spent the best four years of my life down in Charlottesville.

Are you talking about Carbonleaf, by the way?
They are a good celtic rock/pop band. They had that radio hit. "I am the boxer" or whatever. I've seen them a couple of times in C'Ville and once opening up for David Grey. Fun stuff. And surprisingly entertaining live.
Posted By: eightmanvt Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/30/04 07:26 PM
Ahhhh...Carbonleaf...that's what I was trying to come up with. Charlottesville???....well...I'll try not to hold it against you....I spent considerable time in Blacksburg!!
Posted By: eightmanvt Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/30/04 07:27 PM
As an aside...did you know Fighting Gravity used to be "Boy-o-Boy"...I saw them back then too.
Posted By: SeanF Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/30/04 07:41 PM
Not nearly as extensive a list, quite paltry really. Some of these bands were openers.

Chilliwack
Sting
April Wine
Screaming Blue Messiahs (Barrymore's)
Shuffle Demons (Barrymore's)
Ace Frehley (Barrymore's)
Rush
Chalk Circle
Honeymoon Suite
Doobie Brothers
Charlie Parker
David Bowie
Duran Duran
Big Country

And after disagreeing on Zepp, we're both fans of a pretty darned obscure band. In fact, I paid about $45CDN for a used copy of their Bikini Red on CD.

Posted By: SeanF Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/30/04 08:12 PM
They really put on an intense show too. I put (Barrymore's) at the end of some of them - if anyone is familiar with the Ottawa area they know Barrymore's is a small club off Bank Street that holds about 800 people. Really get up close and personal with the bands. I could have spit shined Ace Frehley's shoes if I had a shammy in my pocket.

Blacksburg?

You do know that a Hokie is a castrated male turkey, right? Talk about being on the low end of the mascot totem pole....

Oh well, I'll look beyond your past indiscretions and choices...you seem to be on the right track these days, anyway.
Posted By: eightmanvt Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 04/30/04 10:43 PM
Another victim of wahoo propaganda....I'd expect a bright attorney such as yourself to be able to see past that. The Hokie bird...is more like a turkey on steroids.... and I had a choice of going to UVA...but given my decision to be an engineer...it was no contest. However, if I were going to law school...and I've given that very serious thought...everytime I'm bored with what I'm doing... then UVA is very high on my list of choices.

I hate to admit this, but I've been to 1 concert in my lifetime and I didn't even buy the ticket. Someone gave me the ticket. It was Don McLean(the Chevy levee dude).
Posted By: F107plus5 Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 08/21/05 02:04 AM
This may seem a bit specialized!!

Dr. James Kibbe.
Dr. Dudley Oakes.
Dr. Marilyn Mason.
Dr. Jeffery Hammond.

Sounds more like a trip to the Hospital than various Organ Recitals put on by grad students and staff at the U of M, in Ann Arbor.

No charge for me either as I was very good friends with half of them, and fairly well aquainted with the rest.
Posted By: Craig_P Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 08/21/05 07:43 AM
I'm 25 now, and have been going to shows for about 10 years. Pretty much exclusively small bands, in bars, halls etc. I once tried to figure out how many bands I've seen, and gave up once the list was over 100. Rough guess, I've probably seen over 500 live bands, cause I'm sure I've been to 150 shows, and some of them were fests.
All in all, I'm surprised I have any hearing left in my ears.

Bren. Did you see The Misfits (ie, with Danzig), or the current fake Misfits? Because if you saw them with Danzig I'm jealous.

The fakest of the fake... Doyle, Jerry, Dr. Chud and no singer because Michael Graves didn't show up for the Canadian tour.

Jerry took most of the vocals, with the opening band singer doing some.

Here's an open question to all of Y'all who have seen and heard so many more multiples of the live bands than I've managed to experience in my short lifetime:

You've listened to all these groups......live.....and now you own Axioms.

Are your Axioms doing an acceptable job of sonically reproducing these live events?

(especially you guys who listen thru M3s, M40s or M50s)

well i'm sure there's a lot less bleeding from the ears...
Posted By: Zarak Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 08/21/05 11:52 AM
Depends on how loud you crank those Axioms
Posted By: JohnK Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 08/22/05 03:50 AM
Jason, you forgot the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Posted By: Zarak Re: Who have you seen live in concert??? - 08/22/05 12:43 PM
True...that is a different type of concert, so I wasn't even thinking along those lines.

I forgot the Gin Blossoms as well...they came to play at my college and sounded awful.

Interesting opportunity to reflect:

"Grad Nights" at Walt Disney World:
Police
Gloria Gaynor
KC and the Sunshine Band
A bunch of other 1-hit wonders of the late 70's that I can't think of right now.

Some of the following (located mostly at or near the bottom of the list) were not initiated by me but I regret to admit that I did attend...

Springsteen (best show ever)
Rolling Stones X 2
The Who
B-52's
Henry Paul Band
AC/DC
Van Halen
U2
Billy Joel
Elton John
Chick Corea
Moody Blues
Hank Williams, Jr.

Willie Nelson
Reba McIntyre
Rascal Flatts
Wierd Al Yankovich
Pavarotti
The Jacksons
Rod Stewart
Bette Midler
Cher

I've been around but I ain't ever seen, a guy who looks like a muppet but he's wrinkled and green. Oh my Yoda.

There is no way I could remember all the concerts I've been to.
Boston was the first. Sept. 27, 1979. Sammy Hagar opened for them.
The most memorable would have to be Pink Floyd (Momentary Lapse Of Reason) in the 80s. I saw the same show twice, one month apart.
All and all, I would say that I've been to over 150 "big name" concerts.

Oh Yeah.....I remember now.....an 1812 Overture concert in San Diego in 1967 with a back-up by US Naval ordnance.

Hard to see the ochestra there toward the end; plus I believe I noticed a bit of distress in the performance of the brass section near the end as well

That's what you call them crapping in their pants?

It's hard to picture a weird Al concert - did he re-enact the entire Truth or Dare Madonna concert?

He actually puts on a pretty good show. He was constantly changing outfits to match the songs he was doing, but it wasn't like you were waiting for him to come out in between either. They had the timing of everything down great.

I used to love his stuff when I was a kid, so it was fun to get a chance to see him even though I haven't heard his stuff in years.

Wow, now that I think about it I hardly go to any shows anymore. But back in the day...

Metallica
Iron Maiden
Anthrax
Pink Floyd
Paul Mcartney
Godsmack
OZZY
Pantera
TOTO
CCR
Testament
Megadeath
Slayer
Alice In Chains

I'm sure there are a few I am forgettting and a bunch of no name bands in local bars.....
The Reverend Horton Heat was always good and Deadhorse too. Although my list is mostly metal, I have always liked a little bit of everything, these bands were the music of the moment though. I still listen to them sometimes, amazing how you can remember all the lyrics to songs you havent heard in 10 years.

Ronno, there is a definite theme to your list. Paul McCartney and TOTO, though, stick out. I'm not knocking them, diversity is good, but looking at the other bands they just don't fit. Makes me laugh. It's all good though.
I almost went to Paul's show when he released "Off the Ground." Didn't happen, though.

I got free tickets to see Paul Mcartney in the Astrodome, a lot of echoes but still a good show. I recently saw TOTO and CCR, not with all the original members of course, here in Veracruz. Really not many big bands are going to come here, but it was something to do. Tickets are expensive, about 60$ but beer is cheap like 1.50$ so it all works out in the end.

After soccer practice when I was a little kid the team would go to this pizza parlor. The place had a jukebox and my dad always gave me a few quarters and told me to pick one of the TOTO songs. Every time we went there he did this. My teammates teased me unmercifully. When I hear TOTO now, it makes me hungry for pizza. No fail.
