Internet college radio - Axiom Message Boards

I am in serious withdrawl. A local collge radio station (WOXY 97.7 from Oxford, OH) was bought by a commercial "alternative" station and now plays the stuff that 2 other stations play (incubus, godsmack, etc. with a couple of old new wave songs thrown in) . Do you guys know of good college radio on the internet? I have tried KEXP and KCRW but I was wondering if there are ones that play up-to-date college radio and some old stuff too

So "College Radio" is now considered a genre?

Ham, I'm almost always listening to streaming radio when I'm at the computer. I certainly do know of "good college radio" which plays the classical music which I listen to(it isn't "old stuff" unless it's from at least 300 years ago). The best way to find this is at http://www.classicalwebcast.dds.nl/. If by chance you should occasionally want a different genre, another good source for finding them is at http://www.radio-locator.com/. You can find just about anything you want.

getoffb -- I guess college radio really isn't a genre, but it is a good description of what I like to listen to. A good variety of old and new songs, from off-the-beaten path artists, and the stations typcially don't have ridiculous over-the-top ads every 15 minutes. The station I was listening to played mostly stuff from alternative rock (to put it in a genre), but played lots of bands well before they became famous - prime examples would be Coldplay and David Gray.

Probably you already did this, but the radio-locator site gives you a list of 32 stations(including WOXY)if you click on the alternative format.

College Radio is a loosely defined genre, you certainly hear the college radio stations refer to it that way

The best radio station in the country is hands-down Radio K, the University of Minnesota's radio station. The playlist is much as described above- an anything goes format. Just driving in this AM they played Deathcab for Cutie, Ella Fitgerald,Fela Kuti, Jurassic 5, Queen, the Soviettes (local punk), Har Mar Superstar, Modest Mouse, you name it. Very professional staff and DJ's, and a genuine love of all things musical.

Who are enjoying some new fame I guess after appearing on Rock Against Bush Vol. 1... they sound a LOT like the Dance Hall Crashers (on Pink & Black records - Fat Wreck's "farm system" for bands fronted by women).

Just a note of sympathy. I lived in the Dayton area until a few years ago, and I loved OXY for the wonderful mix of interesting music. I listen to streaming audio every evening and have yet to find just the right substitute. I can recommend Live365 for sheer variety. Independent radio is, sadly, a dying breed.

That's cool, I knew about Rock Against Bush Vol. 1 (and I hear Vol. 2 is in the works) but I didn't know the Soviettes were on it. They haven't been around long, but are getting some attention here in Minneapolis. I wouldn't say I'm a fan yet, but they are fun and I'm glad to hear they are getting some wider exposure!

RAB Vol. 1 sold 30,000 copies from Fat Wreck's mail order alone. Vol. 2 is in the works but it's more a mix of obscure (to most people) punk and mainstream bandwagon jumpers (No Doubt, Foo Fighters, Green Day), I'm not sure I believe in Volume 2 the same way as I did in volume one - after hearing Fat Mike offered a spot to mallcore "punk (tm)" boy-band Good Charlotte, but refused Propagandhi's selection for volume one on the basis that it took a pot-shot against George Soros.

The Soviettes track is an unreleased one named !Paranoia! Cha-Cha-Cha and it's one of the better songs on the CD - though I'm still convinced the vocal lead is the chick from the Dance Hall Crashers.

Is RadioK in stereo now? When I was at the U it was 770 AM-and fairly weak mono signal. Rev 105 was a favorite before Radio K was started. I'll give it a try.Thanks.
