Just an fyi...I'm currently working on The Polar Express in 3D for IMAX. Going into this project I was pretty skeptical...but I've recently seen the first dailies in 3D IMAX....holy shnikies! You've never seen anything like this before. I can't comment on the story, but the pictures are going to blow you away.
Yeah...though every word was true, that was indeed a shameless plug.
You IMAX whore!
Seriously, I'm gonna have to go see some IMAX movies again soon. It's been too long.
Sounds very cool! I saw the Matrix on the IMAX screen and it was cool. I also saw one about F1 cars. That was awesome to say the least.
We're waiting for Spidey2 to arrive.
Never did see it in the theatre.
Last movie I saw at Imax was crouching tiger, hidden dragon - although I don't think it was retooled for Imax just shown in larger format. The problem was we got there late and had to sit in the second row. You literally had to turn your head and read across the entire screen for the subtitles.
If you saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in an IMAX theatre, you got ripped off. We had nothing to do with that film. They simply projected their 35mm print in the bigger room. No IMAX film, No IMAX sound.
So Spiff,
Did everyone finish this project on time? And if so, is it worth waiting to see it this way instead of in 2D?
I am more worried about sitting in a 3D movie for 90 minutes, it could be nauseating!
Yep...all finished. This release broke pretty much ever large format film record ever. Let's hope we can do the same at the box office now.
See it in 3D. I'm not kidding. It's pretty darn amazing.
I've seen most of the trailers. Even w/o IMAX, the CGI is pretty amazing.
We saw Incredibles and it's pretty amazing how far CGI has come from Toy Story to now. Years ago, I thought Toy Story was good. Now, I hope you guys do next year's Cars in IMAX. THAT would be cool.
I'm sure our people have been begging Pixar, and perhaps next year, as the Pixar/Disney contract expires we'll have better luck. Who knows? I certainly don't.
I don't even know what the next project is going to be yet.
I say you guys bring the NASCAR movie back. That thing was amazing!
I can't wait to catch Polar Express now, too.
Nascar is still playing in quite a few theatres.
We've just revamped our website, and it's much easier to navigate now. It's especially easier to find what's playing now. Take a peek.
www.imax.com
What do you mean by every record? It would not be the longest movie, because I believe Matrix Reloaded got that honor. It is I am sure longest 3D movie.
I wonder how it will compare to the Digital Projection version. That is probably like comparing apples to oranges though. Too bad there are no DLP IMAX projectors yet. Get on that Spiff!
Are you crazy??
Do you know how much data each IMAX frame takes up digitally? That would need some massive storage.
On the other hand, terabytes are getting cheaper and cheaper...
The Polar Express, since it's 3D is FAR more film than either Matrix movie.
IMAX DLP...no comment.
btw...The Polar Express data comes in at nearly 8 terabytes.
hey spiff.....I plan on taking my kids. One question...do you know if the theaters will have 3D-glasses that will fit younger children?
Oh yeah, and how well will said 3d glasses fit over normal glasses?
Checking...I'll let you know.
OK...
The answer is it depends on which theatre you visit. Our local theatre (The Bridge) will only have one size. But they are the same ones we use here at work, and fit very easily over regular glasses (I wear glasses, so I know). They'd likely work for kids as well, they'd just be really big.
Some other theatres will have three different sizes.
Thanks spiff......
we should have wagered IMAX tickets lastnight. hehehe
Hey...you guys played great. I'm looking forward to our rematch!
thanks....but give my partner all the credit (let him know too). He hit more balls than I did and made less mistakes. All I really had to do was hold my serve.
Back on topic. What is your next IMAX project?
I just finished up work on "Figher Pilot: Operation Red Flag". A documentary about the air force training program. I did all the end credits for the film. (Yeah...I made sure my name was in there!)
The next "Hollywood" project is still unknown.
Just got back from watching "The Polar Express" in 3D.
The movie is destined to be a classic IMO. The 3D version was a lot of fun....my kids loved it.
I made the kids wait until the very end of the credits just so I could see spiff's name.
Poor kids...
Yeah....I told them I wanted to see my friend's name because he worked on the movie. I was very surprised they watched ALL of the credits with hardly a fuss.
They then asked "what did he do?"
I said, "I don't know."
Then I got an odd look.
LOL! Whoops! Dad blew that one.
You could have said: "His job is the kind that if you can see what he did, then he didn't do it right. Did you see what he did? No? He must be fantastic at his job, then, eh?"
I just saw it for the first time today myself. If you've got kids bring them. It was really great. A really nice Holiday movie. Something you could watch each year.
btw...I've been reading and hearing a lot of bad reviews of this film, and after seeing it this weekend, I have to wonder what movie these critics went to see. I've had a day to sit on it, and the movie was just darn good.
spiff....I would have to agree with you.
Even if you take out the 3D effects. it was a fun movie, and a classic IMO. I will be getting the DVD when it is available.
don't give spiff too much credit....he didn't do anything with the 2D version.
Keep it up and we are going to have to deflate his ego.
I'm far to humble for you to need to worry.
BTW...I'd love to hear someone's impressions that's seen both the 2D and 3D versions.
What, you think we've got that kind of money?
In reply to:
I'm far to humble for you to need to worry.
I know you are....that's why it is fun to pick on you once in while.
If you weren't so humble.....I would do it all the time.
I got to tell you though...I think the greatest thing about seeing it at an IMAX was the reserved seating.
No waiting in line. I bought the tickets online, printed them at home, threw the kids in the car, no waiting in line for tickets or to get in, got our popcorn and drinks, and right to our seats.
Yep...gotta love the reserved seats...
Have seen Prisoner of Azkaban and Spiderman 2 in IMAX...
Plan on the Polar Express soon...Bob Bullock Texas History museum here in Austin just upgraded their hardware to be able to show feature length movies, and the Polar Express is currently showing there...
Keep up the good work, Curtis.

Now wait second...you mean spiff. Don't take credit from him and give it to me.
DOH...
MY BAD...
Keep up the good work, CRAIG.
Weird day at work...
Brain scrambled...
Me go home now...

Hey...it's my thread I can take it anywhere I want!
~
Played doubles last night and it was GREAT! Are you (Curtis) still on for next Monday?
yeah...I'm in. My body has just about recovered from last week. Shoulder still has a bit of soreness.
Parts of my right leg didn't start hurting until two days after we played.
Getting old sucks.
You should hear my knees and ankles snap, crackle, and pop when I get up in the morning after playing. Who needs Rice Krispies?
Dude....and you are what? 7-10 years younger than me?
Actually...I knees and ankles did that 10 years ago too.
Hee! Hee! Hee! Hee! Hee! Hee!
Must be awful to be old like you guys. Sheesh!
I weight too much to be running around on the court like I do. My legs are plenty strong enough, and cardio-wise it's fine, but the next morning my feet are screaming at me..."WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!".
ever thought of orthotic in-soles?
My friend, that just did 60 miles of walking for Breast Cancer Walk in SF swears by them. She was getting into shape for it, had problems with her feet, tried orthotics...problem gone.
Jack tried some Odor Eaters and they ate both legs to the knees. Poor soul!
Now we are picking on Jack?
Yeah but you should see me run on my knees. Faaaaaasssssst!
Your antics have inspired me.
I
AM gonna have to kill you, Peter. LOL! That is tooooooooooooooo funny! I'm gonna save it and use it on my Christmas letter this year.
The funny part is, Ray actually LOOKS grumpy, while I look sweet, loving, and charming, not to mention VERY cool in my shades.
I'm so glad you made me the one who ends up with Ann-Margret (correct spelling according to the IMDb). WOOF!
Of Course Ray ends up with Sophia who, though not my type, ain't exactly chopped liver.
DUDE.. that pic is hilarious. i almost spit up my coffee this morning.
and i think i would be grumpy to, if i was that old!!!
..

Now THAT'S funny!!! RLOL.
Jack would be taller, but there was that unfortunate Odor Eater incident.....
Here's the original, for comparison purposes.

I think spiff has lost control of his thread....

I don't see any difference...oooh. You added some shades.
Very funny! Very funny!
Ummmm.... I just noticed that I can order the IMAX Nascar Experience in my hotel room. To watch on the 27" mono TV. Something wrong with that.
Sit REALLY close to the TV, and turn it up as loud as it'll go. ????

yes, and have room service come by every 30 minutes to change your tires, clean your windshield, make a chassis adjustment, clean your grill, and give ya a full tank of gas.
you would never have to leave the room!!

Last week, I watched the IMAX Super Speedway DVD...that was pretty cool.
