I realize that this is kind of out there, but its been something i've been thinkin' about a lot recently... you know that the generic big black speakers up in the corners of every bar in America?(or Canada, don't want to offend ) Would my local pub be better served by getting M-80s/60s/whatever to replace those muddling bastards? I'm asking cause the house band is f-in great but hearing them through those cubes of death is painful !

I'm guessing that the primary selection criteria for those speakers are :

1. Cheap

2. Unlikely to be damaged by morons with cigarette lighters

3. Indestructible even with heavily clipping amplifiers

Based on the above, Axioms would not be my first choice

Bridgeman - add big driver cones that move a lot of air... and horn tweeters for the same reasoning.

1.no argument there.
2.not really that kind of crowd...well maybe on St. Paddy's day!
3.well, 80's wouldn't be a bad choice then, right?

It sounds as if M80s are pretty hard to blow out with clean power, but I imagine you could fry up the tweeters pretty easily if you drove a smaller amp into clipping enough.

My dim understanding is that clipping gives you sharper corners on the output waveforms... sharper corners translate into HF content... which shifts more energy into the HF area than you get with normal music... which makes for crispy critter tweeters.

Wouldn't the band have their own equipment, why are they using the bar's speakers? I would hate to see dumb ass's who can't handle themselves after a few cold ones throwing barley pop on Axioms.

And you should see it in action.
The driver excursion is quite amazing.
Over 700W of amp power. Just incredible.
Ian may actually have a 1m dB measurement for this but if he mentioned it, i don't recall.
