I saw this on Slashdot this morning. 1Hz? Is that the "brown note?"
Mythbusters recently debunked the "brown note" myth.

Yeah, I saw that one. MythBusters is far more amusing than any
sitcom on tv right now.
Brown note! Now, that's funny.

Ahh, but read a little more carefully! They ONLY tested down to 5Hz.
If 5Hz at 120+db doesn't make you crap yer pants, it's not likely to happen.

God I love that show.

Hehe. Indeed. I can't even name my favorite episode. The "pole vaulting car," the "exploding house," raising a boat with ping pong balls, preserving food with pyramids, etc.
Pole vaulting car is up there, but the best one is Ancient Chinese Astronaut. That one makes me crack up so hard...
Yeah, that one was great. And the little girl with the hangar full of balloons.
I doubt this thing is meant to be used as a subwoofer by itself. I can't see the fan being able to keep up with the likes of Stanley Clarke, for example... Too much momentum in the blades to be able to change speeds as quickly as a standard sub driver can.
Maybe I'm reading your post wrong, but it's the pitch of the blades that will determine the frequency of the sound, the fan itself will spin at a constant velocity. As long as the blades can change pitch at a very rapid pace (which I hope it could), it should have no problem. One of the websites linked had a great picture of it in motion (not at full speed but it shows the blades pitch up and down).

As an interesting side note (at least to me, lol), in one of my AE classes we made a variable pitch prop (VPP) for an scale aircraft. It turned out to work extremely well, I'm sure 'the sub' uses some of the same principles as the VPP, as far as airflow is concerned.
you can bet that the kids would only touch that subwoofer one time and learn a lesson
That site has some hilarious videos and pictures... its one of my frequent stops.
I think it's more of a shock and awe thing. I doubt anyone would ever describe it as "musical."
hearing is believing-id be interested in hearing one
